- Introduction
-
- Welcome to the wonderful world of Cryptograms. Cryptograms are played
- daily by people all over the world. The premise is simple. A phrase
- has been encoded, and it is your task to decode it. The encoding
- method used is a simple letter shift. That is, every letter in the
- phrase will be mapped to a different letter. For example:
-
- YOZA ZA QMAL.
-
- would become:
-
- THIS IS EASY.
-
- In this example, Y was mapped to T, O was mapped to H, Z was mapped to
- I, and so on. You have to take "YOZA ZA QMAL", deduce the mapping, and
- decode the actual phrase "THIS IS EASY." Simple, right?
-
- There are some tricks that you can use to help you solve the
- cryptograms. For example, the most commonly used letter in the English
- language is E. Also, there are only a certain number of two and three
- letter words. Discovering and using facts like these can significantly
- aid you in your efforts. Lastly, don't be afraid to try a letter
- you're not sure of. If you decide later that you were wrong, you can
- always change it.
-
- The Sysop has complete control over the maximum number of times a user
- can use the program each day, the maximum time he can stay in the door
- on each visit, and the maximum number of puzzles he can solve during
- each visit. In addition, the Sysop can designate a user as a Game
- Master, who has control over phrase maintenance and the configuration
- of the program.

- Sysop Information
-
- The Cryptogrammer game is distributed as shareware, and has a
- built-in limitation. The game comes with a 50-phrase library that
- it uses. The options in the game to alter the phrase file will not
- work in the unregistered version, and the game will abort if the file
- is changed manually. In order to get the fully functional version,
- along with any improvements which may have been made, simply follow the
- registration information on page 3.
-
- Rankings are kept according to a points system. Each solved cryptogram
- is worth 10 points, minus 1 point for each hint used. Each unsolved
- cryptogram causes 5 points to be subtracted from the score. The users
- ranking list will display both the Cryptograms solved/attempted and the
- users score.
-
- The Cryptogrammer can be invoked with two command line arguments. First,
- you must have the path/name of the system file. Second, if your modems
- address is nonstandard, you can provide it on the command line in the
- format "PORT:AAAA:X", where AAAA is the port address and X is the IRQ.
- On my Remote Access BBS, I invoke it as follows:
-
- Crypto c:\ra\dorinfo1.def
-
- To add the non-standard address of the modem, simply add the PORT data
- after the System filename.
-
- If you have any comments, criticisms, or suggestions, drop me a line.
