-
- Thank you for trying Books On-Line! Books On-Line will let you and your users
- read a wide variety of books quickly and easily while online. You can use any
- text file. There are hundreds of public domain books available as text files
- free of charge. Many of these books are avaiable via internet FTP.

- Installing BookReader
-
- If you did not unzip BookReader with pkunzip -d, run the install.bat file to
- ensure that all files are in their appropriate directories.
- BookReader can run on any BBS capable of supplying a DORINFOx.DEF or DOOR.SYS
- drop file. If your BBS doesn't generate one, use a converter like DoorMaster.
- Execute BOOKRDR.EXE with the name of the drop file on the command line.
-
- For example: BOOKRDR C:\BBS\DORINFO1.DEF
-
- -----------------------------------
- Sample batch file for BBS execution
- -----------------------------------
- @ECHO OFF
- CD\BBS\BOOKRDR
- BOOKRDR \BBS\DORINFO1.DEF
- CD\BBS
- -------------------------------------
- Sample batch file for BBS errorlevels
- -------------------------------------
- @ECHO OFF
- :START
- CD\BBS
- RUNBBS
- if errorlevel 12 goto books
- if errorlevel 3 goto quit
- goto START
- :books
- cd BOOKRDR
- BOOKRDR ..\DOOR.SYS
- goto START
- :quit
- -------------------------------------
-
-
- To try BookReader locally type BOOKRDR with no parameters.
-
- Most BBSes do not use nonstandard or multiport COM ports, but if you are sure
- that yours does, you will need to specify the port address and IRQ in the file
- BOOKRDR.IRQ. If you have more than 8 ports that you need to configure, you will
- need to have more than one copy of BookReader. The format of the BOOKRDR.IRQ
- file is:
- Port 1 Base Address (hex)
- Port 1 IRQ (decimal)
- Port 2 Base Address (hex)
- Port 2 IRQ (decimal)
- etc... up to 8 ports. I am assuming that it would be impractical to run
- BookReader more than 8 times on one computer. If your multi user BBS uses
- seperate computers you probably won't have to use nonstandard COM ports.
- MajorBBS and WorldGroup sysops, look for BookReader for MajorBBS coming soon.

-
- Adding Books
-
- To add books to BookReader, place the text file in the TEXT\ directory and run
- BOOKADD.EXE. Specify that you want interactive mode and enter file descriptions
- when you are prompted.
- Text Formats: BookReader is very picky about text formats. A properly
- formatted text must have no more than 79 collumns and contain
- both linefeeds and carriage returns. If a book is not formatted
- correctly, BookAdd will try to format it. Please make sure that
- the author's intent is not hindered by reformatting.
- BookReader has two methods of formatting text. Paragraph
- reformatting will keep all information but it will lose track of
- where lines begin and end, which can lead to reading difficulty.
- Truncation will cut off any line greater than 79 collumns. It is
- useful for 80 collumn formatted lists which go slightly over. Do
- not use truncation on text formatted for more than 80 collumns or
- you will lose information.
- Display formats:
- For ANSI mode, BookReader requires an 80x24 text mode (which
- most terminal programs accomplish by using 80x25 mode with a
- status bar.)
-
- After you add a few books you might decide to change descriptions. To do this,
- run BOOKADD /E for the book editor.
-
-
- Maintainance
-
- BookReader requires no regular maintainance, but we recommend that you run
- BOOKADD.EXE occasionally to keep files organized and make popular book lists.
- The command line for maintianance is:
- BOOKADD [ /I | /A ]
- For interactive mode, type BOOKADD/I. For automatic mode, type BOOKADD/A. You
- can also just type BOOKADD and it will wait a few seconds to prompt a user but
- continue on if no one responds.
-
-
- Registration
-
- BookReader will limit you to the first 100 lines of books unless you register
- it. We believe that BookReader will greatly improve your BBS's offerings and we
- think registration is worth the price. See REGISTER.TXT for details.
