  3. Announcing Cygnus Data System's Voice Mail System.
  4.  
  5.     ANSWER.EXE is a Voice Mail System which supports the CompuCom
  6. Combo modem, Cygnus Data System's DigiPhone, Creative Lab's SoundBlaster,
  7. and LANtastic's Voice Card.  Support to be added for The BigMouth,
  8. Watson, and other sound boards.
  9.  
  10.          ANSWER.EXE is designed to operate on IBM and compatible
  11. computers.  The software requires at least 384 Kbytes of memory, and
  12. should be used with at least 3 to 5 megabytes of available hard disk
  13. space.  ANSWER.EXE will play and record messages to and from a floppy
  14. disk, but since message files are large, floppies have limited message
  15. capacity.  The CompuCom modem samples voice at 10 Khz ANSWER.EXE and
  16. therefore records at 10 Khz and so message files are 10 Kbytes per
  17. second.  This translates to 600,000 bytes of information per minute.
  18. Also required for operation is a telephone line and a telephone receiver.

  20.          ANSWER.EXE used with a voice mail card is a telephone answering
  21. system which features four primary modes of operation - the Personal
  22. Answering Machine, the Voice Mail Box, the Information Server, and the
  23. PhoneBook Dialer.  Each mode operates independently but may access the
  24. same messages.  Each of these modes is described briefly below, and in
  25. detail in Chapter 5.
  26.  
  27.          The Personal Answering Machine will operate just as most common
  28. telephone answering machines do, but can do even more.  It will select
  29. from as many as sixteen different outgoing messages and play it or them
  30. to the caller, prompt the caller to leave a message after a tone, record
  31. an incoming message, and allow the caller to edit the incoming message.
  32. The outgoing message number and the number of rings before answering can
  33. be programmed.  Incoming messages may be played back from a remote
  34. location.  A presetable access code is required for this access.
  35.  
  36.          The Voice Mail Box provides a system which can receive voice
  37. messages for several persons by assigning each person a mail box number.
  38. A System Operator assigns mail box numbers and maintains the mail box
  39. accounts.

  41.          The Information Server is designed to present information to the
  42. caller in response to the caller's touch tone signals.  With this mode,
  43. the caller can selectively receive the particular information of
  44. interest.  Callers may also leave messages in this mode.

  46.          The PhoneBook Dialer provides an outdialing feature which may be
  47. used to automatically dial and redial a single number selected from a
  48. PhoneBook or sequentially dial numbers from an ASCII list of phone
  49. numbers.  When redialing a single number from the PhoneBook, the computer
  50. will present an audible beep when the call goes through.  When in the
  51. list dial mode, the called party will be presented with a menu much like
  52. in the Information Server.

  54. COMPUCOM COMBO MODEM OWNERS

  57. CompuCom has closed its doors, and defaulted on its payment for this
  58. voice mail software.  I am now distributing the software myself.  ROM
  59. upgrades for your modem are available from The General BBS in San Diego
  60. which as been serving as the CompuCom Technical Support board.  The
  61. data number is (619) 528-0895.  You must have v2.77 of your ROM to enable
  62. the voice features.  You can find the version of your ROM by using the AT
  63. command ATI3.  To get the Voice Mail Software, fill out the order form
  64. below and mark ONLY the ANSWER.EXE Software for the CompuCom.  You do not
  65. need the other items for the CompuCom Combo to operate voice mail.

  67. The DigiPhone Voice Mail Card

  70. If you do not already have a voice mail card, Cygnus Data Systems
  71. produces and excellant sound quality card which uses and external speaker
  72. and microphone instead of a telephone handset to play and record
  73. messages.  It also has a telephone interface with full telephone
  74. bandwidth audio quality.  These are available for a very reasonable
  75. price.  See the order form below for ordering information.

  82.                             An IBM PC Voice Mail Card
  83.  
  84.                  The  DigiPhone  functions as  an  enhanced  telephone 
  85.             answering  machine and is designed as a plug in  card  for 
  86.             the  IBM  PC  and compatibles.  In  addition  to  standard 
  87.             answering   machine  functions,  the  DigiPhone   features 
  88.             programmable outgoing message selection, message  routing, 
  89.             response  to  caller's  touch  tone  signals,  and  remote 
  90.             programming ability.

  92.                  The  DigiPhone will answer incoming telephone  calls, 
  93.             deliver   outgoing   messages   which   are   programmably 
  94.             selectable  from  as many as 16 digitized  audio  messages 
  95.             stored on the PC's hard disk, record incoming messages  to 
  96.             the hard disk or optionally to an external  tape recorder, 
  97.             route  messages  to  a specified receiver,  respond  to  a 
  98.             caller's   touch   tone  signals,  and  enter   a   remote 
  99.             programming mode as a result of a special code sent by the 
  100.             caller.

  102.                  Audio  messages are processed digitally via  A/D  and 
  103.             D/A  converters which receive and send 8 bit data  to  and 
  104.             from  the IBM PC through a selectable port  address.   A/D 
  105.             conversion  is  implemented  with  the  ADC0802  which  is 
  106.             operated  at a clock rate of 512 Khz (corresponding  to  a 
  107.             conversion rate of 8 Khz).  D/A conversion is  implemented 
  108.             with  the DAC0830.  Interface with the telephone  line  is 
  109.             accomplished  with  the  speech  circuit  TP5700   coupled 
  110.             through  opto-couplers.   Messages are recorded  using  an 
  111.             external  600  ohm  dynamic  microphone  and  played  back 
  112.             through an external 8 ohm speaker.

  114.                  A  full featured pull-down menu program  is  provided 
  115.             with   the  DigiPhone  and  implements  all   programmable 
  116.             functions.  Data I/O with the card is interrupt driven  to 
  117.             allow apparent simultaneous disk I/O.
