- Hints for setting up AMU
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- While a great deal of effort has been made to make AMU easy to set up, there
- are some things to keep an eye out for. It is highly recommended that you
- first try AMU on only one or two of your file areas at first so you can
- verify that it does what you expected and that it is configured properly.
- It would be foolish to let such a powerful program loose on your entire
- file base without first checking it out. Many problems people have had
- with AMU in the past have stemmed from improper configurations, some of the
- most common mistakes are explained below. Keep these in mind as you
- configure AMU:
-
- * Most important is to read the documentation. I know, that's boring, but
- it's there for a reason. If I didn't think it was important, I wouldn't
- have spent time writing it. To make it easier, you can load AMUCFG and
- any time you need help just press F1 and you will be shown the pertinant
- section of the AMU.DOC file.
-
- * For systems using the FILES.BBS type file system, there are five fields in
- AMUCFG on the File Manager -> Global menu to pay special attention to:
-
- 1) Ext Char: If you use extended descriptions (more than one line) in
- your FILES.BBS, you need to define a character which indicates that a
- line is an extended description. For example, many people use such
- indicators as a '+', '|', any many others.
-
- 2) Ext Offset: This is related to the above, and this should be set to the
- column in which AMU will find the extended description character.
- Failure to configure these two fields can have disasterous results to
- your descriptions.
-
- 3) Left Bracket: This is the character which is used as the first delimater
- for your download counter. For a typical download counter which would
- look like [00], the '[' would be the left bracket.
-
- 4) Right Bracket: Same as the above, but this would be set to a ']' instead
- in the above example.
-
- 5) Width: This specifies how wide you want AMU to format download counters
- to. For example, specifying a 3 would create one that looks like
- [001], a 2 would look like [01], etc. Note that if you define this to
- be a zero, AMU will NOT use download counters at all, i.e., it disables
- their usage. If you are using options which use information gathered
- from download counters and this field is set to zero, these options will
- be somewhat limited. (for example, updating download counters will not
- work at all since you're telling AMU that you don't use download counters)
-
- * When defining logfiles, archives, Newfiles/Allfiles listings, and various
- "Enforcement" options, be sure to set the 'Enabled' flag to Yes for each
- one, otherwise AMU will ignore it. This will be evident as you're
- configuring AMU.
-
- * Some of AMU's options require exclusive access to your user files, logfiles,
- or file areas. Some do not. For this reason, it is recommended that AMU
- be run at a time when all nodes are taken down for maintenance rather than
- while users could be online. While no harm will occur if users are online,
- AMU may not be able to perform all of the functions you want it to if it
- cannot get exclusive access to some files.
