Simultaneously, Vostok 2 was launched from Baikonur. The success of this mission consolidated the Soviet lead over America as Gherman Titov orbited the Earth a staggering 17 times before re-entry. It was later revealed that Titov had ejected from his capsule before it touched down. Still no American had achieved a single orbit.
