Transcription: Although never revealed at the time, the Soviet space program suffered a horrendous accident at the Baikonur Cosmodrome on October 24, 1960. During an attempt to launch an SS-7 missile, the first stage failed to ignite. The chief of the Soviet Union Strategic Rocket Forces, Marshal Mitrofan Nedelin, ordered an immediate examination of the rocket and he and his staff went down to the launch pad. As they inspected the first stage, the second stage ignited. The resulting explosion killed 56 men, Nedelin among them.
