Transcription: Although the Soviets seemed to be ahead technically, the early practical exploration of Earth's orbit was in fact dominated by the Americans. In April 1960, America launched TIROS, the first weather satellite, soon followed by the transit navigation satellites and the first communications satellite, Courier 1B. Research still had to tackle the problems of re-entry with crucial advances needed in heat shield technology and recoverable capsules. These would contribute towards America's greatest moment yet in the race to come.
