Transcription: The Soviet success continued with Luna 3, launched on October 4th, 1959. Equipped with a complex camera, its figure of 8 orbit took it around the far side of the moon, transmitting back to an amazed Earth the first ever pictures of this previously unseen region. This was the space age at its pioneering best. In the US, repeated launch failures were fueling American government concerns that its base program had fallen even further behind. The gap was soon to be shortened.
