  21. A.  Folder Contents and Overview
  22. =================================
  23. This folder contains 
  24. Intel Client Instrumentation for DMI Ver 3.0
  25. for:
  26. Microsoft* Windows NT* 4.0 with Service Pack 3 including NDIS HotFix 
  27.   or with a subsequent Service Pack
  28. Windows* 95 (NDIS drivers only)
  29. Windows 98 and 
  30. Windows 2000.
  31.  
  32. This folder contains the MIF and MIB files your management software will
  33. need to view in order to view the Intel(r) adapter functions.
  34.  
  35. The DMI 2.0 SP SDK v1.10 (Service Provider) setup program is located 
  36. under DMI-SNMP\Win32_SP on the CD. This must be installed prior to the
  37. Intel Client Instrumentation for DMI Version 3.0
  38.  
  39. The Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider (SP) and Client Instrumentation 
  40. 3.0 for Windows (CI) are updated software modules that 
  41. allow standards-based DMI 2.0 and SNMP management applications, 
  42. including Intel's LANDesk(R) Client Manager, to monitor the status 
  43. of PCI adapters. The drivers included in this folder can be
  44. used to view both single adapter information and custom information
  45. on the latest features of Intel adapters including AFT/ALB
  46. Teaming, VLAN, and Flow Control. SNMP support is not available for 
  47. Windows 9x (limited to Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000). Otherwise, 
  48. the DMI and SNMP information available is identical since the SNMP 
  49. information is derived via an approved DMI to SNMP mapping technique.
  50. The only difference is that DMI applications read the included MIF
  51. file and SNMP applications read the included MIB files.
  52.  
  53. B. Software Requirements and Install File Locations
  54. ====================================================
  55. The software requirements to run the Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider 
  56. and Client Instrumentation are:
  57.  
  58. - A Windows 9x or NT based operating system including Windows 2000.
  59.  
  60. - Microsoft's SNMP Service (installed and running)
  61. SNMP Service for Win 98 is on the Windows98 CD at \Tools\Reskit\Netadmin\SNMP  
  62.  
  63. - Any Intel NDIS PCI adapter driver. Intel Client Instrumentation 
  64. supports all Intel PCI PRO/100, PRO/100+ and PRO/1000 adapters. 
  65. If you are running an NDIS based driver under Windows NT 4.0, there 
  66. is no need to install any new drivers to get DMI and SNMP support. 
  67. However, if you are planning to use adapter teaming features 
  68. including AFT and ALB, you must use the latest NDIS drivers as 
  69. provided on the adapter CD.
  70.  
  71. The Service Provider must be installed before the Client 
  72. Instrumentation. If you have a Service Provider later than Version 
  73. 2.0 already installed, you do not need to install the Service 
  74. Provider from this CD.
  75.  
  76. To install the Intel Client Instrumentation:
  77. - Make sure the SNMP Service is started (Check in the Services list)
  78. - Run DMI-SNMP\WIN32_SP\SETUP.EXE (to  install the Service Provider)
  79. - Restart the system. This is required for the Service Provider to start.
  80. - Run DMI-SNMP\WIN32\INSTALL.EXE (to install the Client Instrumentation)
  81. - Restart the computer if prompted. The programs may show installed
  82. but they will not run correctly until any requested reboots are done.
  83. (They may also be installed through Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.)

  85. Contact your Network Administrator if you need help with installation.

  87. To install the actual MIB and MIF provided information for the Intel
  88. adapter, you must use your Management Software (see Section E).
  89.

  91. C. Uninstall Procedure
  92. ======================
  93. To properly uninstall the Client Instrumentation, the Service 
  94. Provider software must still be running. Then go to
  95. Add/Remove Software in the Windows Control Panel and select
  96. "Intel Client Instrumentation for DMI and SNMP" and click the
  97. Remove button.
  98. After Intel Client Instrumentation is gone from this list, you 
  99. may remove the Service Provider software through the Start Programs 
  100. menu. MIBs and MIFs usually do not require removal, but if you should
  101. wish to remove the Intel specific files, see the documentation
  102. for your Management application.

  105. D. Compilation (Installation) of the MIF/MIB Files
  106. ===================================================
  107. SNMP:
  108. In order to access the Intel adapter specific data through the Intel 
  109. Client Instrumentation, you must use your management application to 
  110. load (compile) the following files:
  111. - INTEL.MIB
  112. - DMTF-DMI.MIB, 
  113. - INTELNIC.MIB
  114. (all located in the \DMI-SNMP\WIN32 directory).
  115.  
  116. The DMTF-DMI.MIB and INTEL.MIB files should be loaded before 
  117. loading INTELNIC.MIB.
  118. If you have already installed another version of INTEL.MIB, use the 
  119. INTEL.MIB with the most recent file date. Read the documentation for 
  120. your management application for more information on how to load MIB 
  121. files. 
  122. If you receive an error message when trying to compile these
  123. MIB files, it may be that your management software may not include
  124. sufficient or recent enough supporting MIB files. Please contact your 
  125. management application provider if you believe this is the case.

  127. DMI:
  128. In order to access the Intel adapter specific data through the Intel 
  129. Client Instrumentation, you may need to load the NI_NIC.MIF file.
  130.  
  131. Read the documentation for your management application for more 
  132. information on how to load MIF files.

  134. E. Supported Standards
  135. ======================
  136. The Intel Client Instrumentation Version 2.0 fully supports the DMI 
  137. 2.0 specification and has support for Ether-Like SNMP MIB files.
  138.  
  139. At this time there are no user SETs. There are sets in the 
  140. IBM Failover Adapter Table Group that are required by the IBM 
  141. Hotplug process but there is no user set allowed. 
  142.  
  143. Only the following events listed in the ni_nic.mif and 
  144. intelnic.mib are currently supported:
  145. - Cable unplugged/No LAN activity
  146. - Adapter initialization failure
  147. - AFT/ALB events (Adapter Fault Tolerance/Adaptive Load Balancing)

  152. - DMI Events and SNMP Traps 
  153. - Support for AFT/ALB management (Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 only)
  154. - Support for VLAN management (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 only)

  156. - Support for specifying custom solutions and thresholds in 
  157. the NI_NIC.DAT file in the system directory.

  160. G. Specific Application Notes:
  161. ============================== 
  162.  
  163. 1. In HP* OpenView* Network Node Manager*, use "Event Config" to configure 
  164. the events. 
  165. For example, to configure the "Cable Unplugged" event, 
  166. - select "intelNICHEALTHEvt2",
  167. - then go to the "Modify Events" menu item. 
  168. - select the Action as "Log and Display in Category" and 
  169. - specify an appropriate category. 
  170. - Then in the Event Log message, enter "Cable unplugged $*".

  173. H. Known Issues
  174. =============== 
  175.  
  176. 1. In order to use Hewlett Packard* OpenView* Network Node Manager* 
  177. with the Intel Client Instrumentation, you must use Ver 6.0 or later 
  178. or Release 5.0x with consolidated patch NM_00046.EXE. This patch can
  179. be downloaded from:

  182. 2. Known Problems in Installation and Uninstallation Order:
  183. a. To remove the Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider after installing the
  184.    Intel Client Instrumentation, you must uninstall the Intel Client
  185.    Instrumentation first.
  186.         
  187. b. Version 3.0 of the Intel Client Instrumentation may not install
  188.    correctly over an existing Version 1.0 of the Intel DMI 
  189.    Network Adapter Instrumentation Layer. The Uninstall feature may
  190.    not work correctly after upgrading so please uninstall Ver 1.0
  191.    BEFORE upgrading. In order to install Version 3.0 correctly, 
  192.    please use the documented Uninstall procedures for Version 1.0.
  193.        
  194. c. If the TCP/IP protocol is removed after installing the Client 
  195.    Instrumentation, you must reinstall the Client Instrumentation 
  196.    again after you reinstall TCP/IP.
  197.  
  198. d. If your Microsoft SNMP Service is removed after installing the 
  199.    Client Instrumentation, you must reinstall the Client Instrumentation
  200.    after you reinstall the Microsoft SNMP Service.
  201.  
  202. e. With Windows NT 4.0 SP3 and SP4, if you install Microsoft SNMP
  203.    Service after installing the Service Pack, you may receive the 
  204.    error  "Entrypoint SnmpSvcGetEnterpriseOID could not be located 
  205.    in snmpapi.dll." 
  206.    To fix the problem, you will need to reinstall that Service Pack
  207.    or preferably install the latest Service Pack available.
  208.    (This is a known and documented issue with Service Pack 3 and 4.

  213.    Another Microsoft noted error associated with Service Pack 4 and
  214.    fixed in Service Pack 5 is "SNMP.EXE Exception: access violation.."
