On the NZ plot, there's a thin ribbon of stable nuclei bending slowly upwards as the number of neutrons progressively outruns the number of protons. This ribbon is surrounded by a wide band of unstable nuclei. We saw that neutrons prefer to go in pairs and that the same is true of protons. The most massive nuclei at the top of the plot can be split into roughly equal halves.
