Use this command to start a custom defined menu complete allowing the user to
launch defined programs.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Run ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

If you have selected an executable program you can run it directly by
double-clicking with the left mouse button, or by pressing enter while the file
is selected.

With this option, you can run an external program in the same situation or
search for new program.  I recommend that you specify the application type.

If your selection is not an executable file, ignore the error message that pops
up and select an executable program.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. View ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

View (read-only) the selected file with the Commander's internal viewer.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Dump ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

HEX-dump (and more) the selected file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Edit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Edit loads the file under the cursor bar into the specified editor.

Commander includes a very fast internal editor which can edit files up to 65535
bytes.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Copy ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Copy command allows you to copy files and directories.

File/directory wildcards are allowed.

If you selected "use the right mouse button for drag and drop," from the menu
Options-Configuration, you can copy one or more file(s) and/or directory(ies)
with this feature.

A customizable Filter is available.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Move ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command allows you to move files and directories.

File/directory wildcards are allowed. You can also move and rename at the same
time with this command.

If the target drive is the same logical drive as the source drive, this
operation goes very quickly; just the references are affected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Rename ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command allows you to rename files and directories.

File/directory wildcards are allowed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Make Directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command allows you to create directories.

The new directory must not be a subdirectory on the active directory. It is
possible to make directory directly on a new drive.

Commander allows you to create an entire group of subdirectories with a single
mouse click.  To create more than one subdirectory:

Select the target drive/directory; click on the Make Directory icon or press
the F7 key; type in the names of your subdirectories separated by backslashes
(\), for example, abc\efg\hi\jk, and press ENTER. Commander makes all
directories.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Create File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

You can create a new empty file with the Commander. Select "Create file" from
the "Files" menu or press Shift F7 and type in the filename.  If you want to
create a new file under a different directory than the current one, you must
write the full pathname.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Delete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command allows you to delete files and directories. All marked or selected
files or directories are deleted.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Print ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the Print operation to print ASCII files.

You can choose to let your printer or Commander paginate your file.

Commander will not print graphics files and it does not support fonts other
than the default setting.  If you have graphics or you want to print with
another font, use an external editor.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Pack ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Pack all the marked files with the selected packer.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Unpack ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Unpack all the files stored in a zipfile with the selected packer.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. File attributes ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

There are two ways to change the file attributes:

o 1. If you have selected only one file, you can change the attributes, the
  date and/or the timestamp for this file.
o 2. If you have selected a directory or a group of files, you can set or
  delete the attributes, for all selected files.

This command works for all directories selected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Application type ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use this option to obtain informations about the type of the executable file.

Executables files are COM, EXE, DLL files and so on.

Batch (BAT, CMD) files are not recognized.

Select and deselect a group of files and directories.

This command brings up a list of the last paths that you have issued in this
Commander session and (optionally) the saved paths from old sessions. Each path
will be stored just one time; old items are removed.

To go back into a path from list, press the lightning button.

You can remove paths from list by selecting the path and pressing the "eraser"
button.

This command brings up a list with the preferred paths that you have stored and
saved from old sessions.

The Container is a temporary place to hold full pathname references that you
want to manipulate later.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 39. Tool Bar ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Tool Bar can be hidden or displayed.

The Disk Bar can be hidden or displayed.

The Status Bar can be hidden or displayed.

The Status Bar provides more information including current directory/file,
amount of free space on current drive, settings for Left and Right windows,
date and time.  You can bring up a context menu with the right mouse button or
can activate the menu for files, for the left or right panel, or one of the
specific menus. For example if you use the context menu with the mouse pointer
on the time field you can modify the date and time settings for your computer.

The status bar also supports different fonts.

You have the possibility to show or hide the command bar.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 44. Search ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command searches the selected disk(s) for files. You can search for files
by name or search for files containing specified text.

o File(s) to find: Type in the name you want to search for.
o Containing: You can enter a text string to search.
o Case sensitive: Toggles case sensitivity.
o Drives: You can mark one or more drive to search.
o All: Mark all drives or restore the last selection.
o Found List Box: Displays files that are found.

Buttons:

o  Search - Start the search.
o  Cancel - Cancel the search dialog.
o  Stop  - Stop the search.
o  Go to  - Go to a found file.
o  Edit  - Edit a found file.

Metacharacters (wildcards) in a file name work as follows:

o  A question mark (?) match one character.
o  An asterisk (*) match any characters for the rest of the name or extension.
o  A period (.) in the name causes to match same as "*.*"


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 45. System information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Displays information about your computer.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 46. Date and Time ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use this to change the date and/or time setting(s) on your computer.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 47. Swap panels ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command changes the position of the two panels so that the left appears on
the right and the right appears on the left.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 48. Left = Right ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Change the path on the deselected panel to the current selected path.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 49. Compare directories ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command compares the contents of the directories displayed in two panels
and marks the differences.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 50. Synchronize directories ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command Synchronizes directories, that is, it compares the contents of the
directories that are selected in the two panels.

If the directories have differences, it automatically makes a copy from the
files.

You can use a filter for the files.  Example:   *.doc *.txt *.lwp   or
*.doc;*.txt;*.lwp


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 51. Calculate occupied space ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Calculates the space occupied by the marked files and their complete
subdirectories.

If no file is selected, the space occupied by the file or directory under the
cursor bar is calculated.  Additionally, the file size is rounded to the
cluster size of the source and destination directory, to determine the actual
space required.

The space for the directory information itself is not considered.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 52. Associate ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command is used under Commander to create and maintain the extension file,
which associates programs with file extensions. This feature allows you to
point-and-shoot on a file to load that file into application that created it.
You can insert a new definition or delete one. It is possible to find the
associate program with the Search push-button. (I recommend that you specify
the application type.)

You can insert Parameters into the Command.  The ! shows where Commander will
insert the actual selection. If you don't write the ! , the parameters are
appended to end of the command.

Example:

 D:\Path\Program Parameter1 ! Parameter2

N.B.  This command does not associate data objects with program objects on the
Desktop.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 53. Create Program Object ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command is used to create a new program object.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 54. Kill Process ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use this option to send the KILLPROCESS exception to another process or group
of processes. The default action of the system is to terminate each of the
processes.

The process are identified by PID. If a number of processes are the same PID,
all are killed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 55. Shut Down ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

You can preserve your Desktop by shutting down your system before turning it
off.

Warning: You might lose information if you turn off your computer without
shutting down your system. Check all sessions for unsaved  information before
you start the shutdown.

The next time you start the operating system, all objects that were open when
you shut down are open again and are displayed with the same view they had at
the time of the shutdown.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 56. Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The items in this pull-down menu allow you to set various options of the
Commander.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 57. Customize Tool Bar ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use this option to change the buttons displayed on the tool bar. You can add
new buttons from the left listbox, delete or move it.  You can also show or
hide the tool bar.

Button sizes are also optional, small buttons and big buttons.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 58. Font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the standard dialog box to change fonts for the panels.

Full and brief displays use only fixed-width (monospaced) fonts.

The customized layout can use any font on your system. (See the options for the
customized layout.)


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 59. Color ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This option allows you to choose the Commander's colors.

For user defined colors, you must select a color from the palette in the list
box.

An example area displays the color selection.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 60. Configuration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This dialog box allows you to set various options, including settings for the
panels, the right mouse buttons, Copy/Move Confirmations, etc.

The Confirmations option lets you determine the security level you want for
file operations.

The "Copy newer files only" option instructs Commander to copy or move only
newer versions of files already present in the destination directory.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 61. Customized Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Besides the Brief and Full layouts for Commander's panels, users can also
select this option to create a customized panel layout.  You can choose from 5
different fields (Name, Size, Attributes, Date, Time)  and arrange them in any
order.  It is also possible to vary the order and selection of the fields
between Left and Right panels.  (In other words, the Left panel might use 3
fields, Name, Size and Attributes while the Right might use all 2, Size and
Name). The Customized Layout can also use any font installed on your system for
its panels.

N.B.  The Name field must be selected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 62. Language ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Commander supports a number of different language modules. To install a
different module, copy the COMMxxx.DLL file (where xxx stands of the language
abbreviation) and the COMMxxx.HLP file into the same directory as the Commander
executable (COMM.EXE). Then select this menu and change to the new language.
The installed modules are displayed in a listbox. You can run more than one
instance of the Commander a time, each in a different language.

N.B.  Commander will conflict with itself if you run two different versions at
a time.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 63. Editor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This option allows you to select an external editor, instead of using the
built-in one. To edit a file, select the file and press the F4 key or select
the Edit menu. Commander includes a very fast internal editor which can process
files up to 65535 bytes. For larger files, the Commander automatically switch
to the external editor. You can also print ASCII files (without graphics or
specialty fonts) from the Commander or from the internal editor. The Commander
does not support printing for graphics files.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 64. User menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use this option to define a custom menu complete allowing the user to launch
defined programs.

Parameter handling:

o *.*  Filename with extension
o *.  Filename without extension
o *:  Current drive letter
o *\  Current directory
o */  Target directory
o **  Insert an "*" on the parameter string
Example:     - WinDiff to compare directories:  *\ */     - WinDiff to compare files:
*\\*.* */\*.*


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 65. Packer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

 Use this command to set the options for the packer.

The compression configuration commands are:

o File extension of compressed file type;
o Command to add a file to a compressed file;
o Command to add a file to a compressed file and also store the file's full
  pathname;
o Command to extract a file from a compressed file;
o Command to extract a file from a compressed file and maintain its full
  pathname;
o Command to delete a file from a compressed file;
o Command to select the best compression method supported by the compression
  utility;
o Command to create the smallest compressed file;
o Command to create a compressed file in the fastest possible time.

WARNING: The first compression app MUST be the PKZIP.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 66. Save setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This option saves the current settings so the Commander will come back with the
same settings the next time you start it.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 67. Left ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Left menu allow you to change the Left panel. You can switch to the Right
panel with Tab key.

Displays one column with all files in a directory, along with the size, date,

This panel displays a directory tree on the current drive.

Toggle the left panel on and off.

Controls the order in which files are displayed in a directory. Related

Sorts files by time.

Sorts files by size, with the largest files first. Files with the same size
will be sorted alphabetically.

Show the files in the same order as on disk.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 79. Reversed ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Show the files in the reversed order.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 80. Info ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This command shows you information about the selected disk. You can select this
window from the menu or context-menu on the status bar. You can also select
this window by pressing Ctrl+L. Pressing Ctrl+L again restores the panel.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 81. Re-read ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This option allows you to re-read the selected disk.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 82. Filter ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The filter command allows you to control what files you see in the Left file
panel.

This menu item allows you to change drives in the left panel.

The Right menu allow you to change the Right panel. You can switch to the Left

This command shows you information about the selected disk. You can select this
window from the menu or context-menu on the status bar. You can also select
this window by pressing Ctrl+L. Pressing Ctrl+L again restores the panel.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 98. Re-read ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This option allows you to re-read the selected disk.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 99. Filter ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The filter command allows you to control what files you see in the right file
panel.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 100. Drive ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This menu item allows you to change drives in the right panel.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 101. Quick Search ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Searches for files within a selected directory. Push the Alt and the Q Keys and
the Quick search dialog box will appear on the bottom of the Commander window.

Type one or more letters from the beginning of the filename you're looking for.
If the letter matches a filename in the directory, the select window will
automatically move to that file.  To move to the next match, press the Ctrl and
Enter keys.

Press Enter to keep the found selection, or press Esc if you want to restore
the old selection.
