- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Lynn's WorkPlace Installer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Lynn's WorkPlace Installer
-
- You are about to install the newest advance in File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
- clients. With this product, you will be able to browse remote FTP sites as if
- they are on your local disk drive.
-
- Using the OS/2 Workplace Shell, FtpFolders will open to show a combination of
- more FtpFolders and FtpFiles. A simple double-click and the file is
- automatically retrieved. After arrival, the file transforms itself into a
- standard data file object with full associations to your installed
- applications.
-
- To get the show on the road, press the Install button. To remove the product,
- press the Deinstall :( button. To exit the installer, press the Exit button.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Normal Install ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Normal Install
-
- A normal install of Lynn's WorkPlace products involves allowing the installer
- task to place the files in the appropriate directories under your OS/2 tree.
- This is the simplest, and most straight-forward of installs. The sequence of
- dialogs for this install are:
-
- Where To Put Files
-
- Ask About Sample
-
- Install Success
-
- Alternatively, a manual install can be done. For a manual install, you are
- responsible for configuration modifications as outlined in that section.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Where To Install? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Where To Install?
-
- There are two choices for where you would like the software installed. The
- first (and recommended) location is within the OS/2 system directory tree on
- your current system drive. By placing the software there, OS/2 will have
- access to it regardless of other configuration changes. If you reinstall OS/2,
- you must reinstall this package (and all Workplace Shell extensions) anyway.
-
- The second alternative is to place the files in any directory of your choosing
- and modify your CONFIG.SYS to assist OS/2 in locating them when necessary. This
- is a manual installation since I refuse to adopt all of the problems that
- accompany tools that automatically change the CONFIG.SYS file.
-
- If you want the software installed in the OS/2 tree, click the Use OS/2 button.
- If you want instructions on the CONFIG.SYS modifications required, press the
- Manual button
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. Create Sample? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Create Sample?
-
- The required files have completed their installation and the Workplace Shell
- classes have been initialized. Would you like a sample FtpFolder created? If
- so, click on the Yes button. If not, click on No.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.3. Successful Install ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Successful Install
-
- The installation of Lynn's WorkPlace File Transfer Protocol was successful!
-
- You can create more FtpFolders by using the Create Another popup menu option on
- the sample or dragging a template out of OS/2's Templates folder. Open the
- settings notebook on the new folder and configure the access information.
- After that, the remote directory can be retrieved by opening the folder (the
- first time) or using the Populate (or Repopulate) option on the FtpFolder's
- popup menu.
-
- IMPORTANT: Due to the nature of filenames on the Internet, you probably need
- to restrict your FtpFolders to HPFS partitions. If your default system drive
- is FAT formatted, you should not place FtpFolders directly on the desktop.
- Instead, create a folder on one of your HPFS drives and place all FtpFolders in
- there.
-
- Enjoy your improved (FTP) access to the Information Superhighway!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Manual Install ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Manual Install
-
- A manual install requires you to place appropriate files in appropriate
- directories and modify the configuration (CONFIG.SYS) so that OS/2 can locate
- the files as needed. The sequence of dialogs for this install are:
-
- Where To Put Files
-
- Manual Configuration Change
-
- Reboot
-
- Ask About Sample
-
- Install Success
-
- Most novice OS/2 users should consider a normal install For a normal install,
- the installer will place files in appropriate directories under your OS/2
- tree.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Manual Install ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Manual Install
-
- Manual installation consists of four (4) steps.
-
- 1. Copy the software to a directory of your choice
-
- 2. Modify PATH, LIBPATH, and HELP in CONFIG.SYS to include that directory
-
- 3. Reboot your machine to have the changes take effect
-
- 4. Re-execute the install to complete the installation
-
- If you have already done steps 1-3, press the Continue button. If not, press
- the Exit button and make the required changes. The Exit button can also be
- used if you want to go back to do an automatic install.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Locked Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Locked Files
-
- When reinstalling a Lynn's WorkPlace product, the installer may need to replace
- files that are currently in use by OS/2. When this occurs, there are several
- optional dialogs that may appear to deal with these files before OS/2 accesses
- them during a bootstrap operation. The dialogs supporting these decisions are:
-
- Some Files Locked
-
- Shutdown Options
-
- Automatic Shutdown
-
- Manual Shutdown
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Locked Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Locked Files
-
- Several required files were locked by the currently executing copy of OS/2. A
- command procedure was created in the root directory of your current system
- drive to copy (or remove) these files. This command procedure must be executed
- BEFORE OS/2's Presentation Manager (specifically, the Workplace Shell) begin
- execution. There are two ways to accomplish this.
-
- A line can be added to your CONFIG.SYS file to automatically execute this
- procedure on your next reboot. The command procedure is constructed so that
- the operations are only done once and the CONFIG.SYS file is restored after the
- reboot.
-
- Alternatively, you can manually bootstrap OS/2 to a command prompt and execute
- the command procedure. If this option is chosen, additional instructions will
- be provided.
-
- To use the first method, click the Automatic button. To do it manually, click
- the Manual button.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2. When To Shutdown? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- When To Shutdown?
-
- Your CONFIG.SYS file has been updated to execute a command file on the next
- reboot. It is recommended that you reboot now. To automatically initiate a
- system shutdown, click the Shutdown button. If you would like to shutdown
- later, click the Do It Later button. Please remember to reboot soon to avoid
- unnessesary confusion with non-functional Ftp objects.
-
- After the reboot, please re-execute this install and take the manual
- installation option. Say that the modifications have been made (Continue) and
- follow the prompts from there.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. Shutdown Started ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Shutdown Started
-
- Shutdown Initiated, Please Close All Windows... (If prompted for permission to
- close INSTALL.CMD or LWPFTPIN.EXE, click on yes. You will NOT lose any data!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.4. Manual Command-Prompt Boot ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Manual Command-Prompt Boot
-
- Please shut down your system and reboot to a command prompt.
-
- To do this under Warp, do a normal shutdown and reboot. When the white
- rectangle appears in the upper left corner of your screen with OS/2 after it,
- press Alt-F1 (Hold the Alt key and press the F1 function key). When prompted,
- type a 'C' (be careful with the V right next door!) and OS/2 will boot to a
- single command window.
-
- Execute the lwpftpin.cmd procedure (in the root directory of your current
- system drive) to complete the file modifications necessary for this install (or
- deinstall). Type EXIT and OS/2 will shut down and reboot again.
-
- If you are installing, please re-execute this install after that reboot and
- take the manual installation option. Say that the modifications have been made
- (Continue) and follow the prompts from there.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Things CAN Go Wrong ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Things CAN Go Worng
-
- As always, there are things that can go wrong. Several dialogs may appear that
- describe and support these unexpected events.
-
- Alternate Installation Success
-
- Manual CONFIG.SYS Restoration
-
- Installation Failed
-
- Unsupported OS/2 Version
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Install Complete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Install Complete
-
- The installation of Lynn's WorkPlace File Transfer Protocol was successful!
-
- You can create an FtpFolder by dragging a template out of OS/2's Templates
- folder and configuring the access information (in the settings notebook). After
- creation, the remote directory can be retrieved by opening the folder (the
- first time) or using the Populate (or Repopulate) option on the FtpFolder's
- popup menu.
-
- IMPORTANT: Due to the nature of filenames on the Internet, you probably need
- to restrict your FtpFolders to HPFS partitions. If your default system drive
- is FAT formatted, you should not place FtpFolders directly on the desktop.
- Instead, create a folder on one of your HPFS drives and place all FtpFolders in
- there.

- Enjoy your improved (FTP) access to the Information Superhighway!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. Manually Restore CONFIG.SYS ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Manually Restore CONFIG.SYS
-
- Install was unable to add an auto-recovery line to lwpftpin.cmd in the root of
- your current system drive. As a result, you will need to manually remove the
- invocation of this procedure from your CONFIG.SYS and delete the lwpftpin.cmd
- file AFTER your next reboot.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3. Install Failed! ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Install Failed!
-
- Something went wrong, I can't access one or more of the required files. Please
- ensure that the following files are in place.
-
- lwpftpfd.dll in \\OS2\\DLL or a directory in LIBPATH lwpftpdr.dll in \\OS2\\DLL
- or a directory in LIBPATH lwpftpfl.dll in \\OS2\\DLL or a directory in LIBPATH
- lwpftprt.dll in \\OS2\\DLL or a directory in LIBPATH lwpftpnt.exe in \\OS2 or a
- directory in the PATH lwpftp.inf in \\OS2\\BOOK or a directory in BOOKSHELF
- lwpftp.hlp in \\OS2\\HELP or a directory in HELP
-
- After making sure that the files are in place (and a reboot has been performed
- if CONFIG.SYS needed to be modified), please re-execute this install and take
- the manual installation option. Say that the modifications have been made
- (Continue) and follow the prompts from there.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4. Wrong Product Version! ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Wrong Product Version
-
- This product REQUIRES OS/2 Warp V3 and the Internet Access Kit (or TCP/IP for
- OS/2 V2.0). (I'm amazed you even got this far if you don't have Warp!) Please
- install the appropriate products and re-execute this install procedure.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Deinstallation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Deinstallation
-
- Not all products are right for all people. If you desire to deinstall the
- product, a procedure has been supplied. Deinstallation will take care of
- deleting all component files if they were installed in the default OS/2 tree.
- Otherwise, you're on your own.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.1. Deinstallation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Deinstallation
-
- Deinstallation of Lynn's WorkPlace products requires the removal of the
- registered WorkPlace Shell class definition and subsequent deletion of the
- support files. Deinstallation cannot be successful if there are any WorkPlace
- Shell objects using the installed class.
-
- If there are any existing objects, you may see several failures logged (as
- popup dialogs) during the deinstallation process. If this is the case,
- alternate methods will be used to remove the class definitions and files. These
- alternate methods will require a reboot to be effective. Additional
- instructions will be provided if necessary.
-
- If you are sure you want to deinstall, press the Continue button. If you want
- to keep the easiest (FTP) Information Superhighway access yet, click on Exit.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.2. Deinstallation Complete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Deinstallation Complete
-
- The deinstallation of Lynn's WorkPlace File Transfer Protocol was successful!
- If you decide to change your mind, simply reinstall the package. Any objects
- that are still on you machine will be adopted by the reinstall and will be
- restored to full functionality.
-
- If you decide not to reinstall, we'll miss you in the FTP fast lane on the
- Information Superhighway!

-
- This is a "smiley". These are cute little character combinations that help
- communicate in text what would otherwise be done with body language and
- inflection.
-
- In this case, the :( is a frowning face (if you turn your monitor on its side)
- expressing my disappointment that you are not pleased with this WorkPlace
- product. Please drop me an email with suggestions that I may be able to
- satisfy your requirements in the future.
