-
-
- Gibbon Talk and Gibbon Talk Daemon allow you to have an interactive
- conversation with another person on a TCP/IP network. The other person
- could be on a local network, or in another country, connected by the
- Internet.
-
- The two help files, GCPTALK.HLP and GCPCLM.HLP, have everything you
- need to know about how the Gibbon Talk package works. This document
- contains a few tips to get you started, and some important information.
-
-
- TRIAL PERIOD
- ------------
- Gibbon Talk, Gibbon Talk Daemon, and Gibbon Common Logon Manager all
- have a trial period that you can use to evaluate the application. The
- programs are fully functional. There are no "nag" messages or any kind
- of limitation. The only difference is in the startup logo and Product
- Information. When these programs start, the startup logo will be
- displayed. If you have registered, these logos will automatically go
- away after the system logo timeout has elapsed (usually 2 seconds.) If
- you haven't registered, you must click on the "OK" button to get rid of
- the logo panel.
-
- IMPORTANT! The logo panel and Product Information panel (they're the
- same, actually) has information about how many more uses are allowed.
- You can use these programs for 30 days from the date of first use. Once
- the 30 day trial period has expired, the programs WILL NO LONGER RUN.
- The logo panel will be displayed, informing you that you have used up
- the trial period, then the program will end.

- FAQs that cover questions and problems that arise can be found at

- HELPFUL TIPS
- ------------
- These are covered in the on-line help files, but unless you read the
- whole thing, they may not be obvious.
-
- Start the daemon first:
- If you start Gibbon Talk and try to send someone a talk request, it
- won't work unless the Gibbon Talk Daemon is running. A message box
- will come up informing you that you need to start the talk daemon.
-
- CLM:
- You do not have to manually start the Gibbon Common Logon Manager (CLM).
- If CLM is not running the the Talk Daemon starts, it will be started
- automatically. The last page of the CLM notebook contail a "Start
- Minimized" checkbox. If you check "Start Minimized" and save the
- settings, CLM will be fairly unintrusive. Once you have registered,
- CLM won't even display the logo panel if the Talk Daemon starts it.
-
- Menus:
- When you start Gibbon Talk, you will notice that there isn't a menu
- bar. Use mouse button 2 (usually the right button) to bring up
- context-sensitive menus. The items on the menus will change slightly
- depending on what part of the window your mouse was over at the time.
-
- Colors and Fonts:
- There are four areas in the Gibbon Talk window (remote text, remote
- header, local text, and local header). These are all independently
- configurable. To change a font, drag it from a font palette and
- drop it on the area you want to change. The local text and remote text
- areas will only accept fixed-width fonts, but the two headers will
- accept either fixed or proportional fonts. The colors are changed the
- same way. Drag a color from a color palette and drop it on the target
- area. The foreground color is changed by hold down the CTRL key while
- dragging and dropping.
-
- Window Size:
- The width of the window is fixed. The only way to change the width is
- to change the font being used. You can change the height, however.
- Increasing the height of the window will give you more visible lines in
- the remote and/or local text areas. The bar that separates the remote
- and local text areas can also be moved to allow more visible lines in
- one or the other.
-
-
- PACKAGE VALIDITY
- ----------------
- You can verify the validity of GCPTALK.PKG, and make sure it actually
- came from Gibbon Computer Products, Inc. Included in the package is a
- file named "GCPTALK.ASC". This is a detached PGP signature. It will
- verify the authenticity of the GCPTALK.ZIP file. At a command prompt,
- type "pgp GCPTALK.ASC GCPTALK.ZIP", and PGP will tell you if the file
- is valid. If you want to do this, you need PGP and my public key. My
- public key is available through ftp to ftp.gibbon.com as the file
- /pub/gcp/pgp-public-key. It's also available through GCP's WWW site.
- It's currently at http://www.gibbon.com/links/pgp-public-key.html. It
- is also available through the PGP keyservers.
-
-
- Installation
- ------------
-
- An installation program, GCPINST.EXE has been included in this package.
- Once you start GCPINST, the installation should be self-explanatory. The
- installation program will copy the files to the appropriate directories,
- optionally update your CONFIG.SYS file, and optionally create objects on
- your desktop.
-
- The installation program can also be used to recreate your desktop objects
- or reupdate your CONFIG.SYS file, should you lose the desktop objects or
- the CONFIG.SYS changes. These functions are performed by selecting the
- appropriate options in the installation program. These options will be
- on the third page.
-
- If you elected to have the install program create desktop objects, you
- will have a "Gibbon Applications" folder. Inside will be icons for the
- three main programs, Gibbon Talk, Gibbon Talk Daemon, and Gibbon CLM.
- There will also be an icon for the Gibbon Help Viewer, which can be
- used to view .HLP files when the application isn't running. This
- program should work with any .HLP file, not just the ones from Gibbon
- Computer Products. There will also be icons for the two text files:
- GCPTALK.DOC (this file) and GCPTALK.REG (the registration form.)
- Gibbon Brand will also have an icon in this folder. This is a program
- that is used to "brand" your programs with your name and serial number
- after you have registered them.
