- Here are other recommended tools for MP3 in OS/2 I tried before releasing
- this beta of pm123. I would also like to try the L3Enc frontend later...
-
- l3en4os2.zip (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/sound/convert/l3en4os2.zip)

- This is actually the well known L3Enc from Fraunhofer-IIS version 1.0. It
- looks like they used EMX to compile this version of L3Enc for DOS, and it
- had the side effect to make it also run in OS/2. Somebody, somewhere, had
- that old copy and made it reappear in public. The new versions of L3Enc
- now use DJGPP and that doesn't make any OS/2 binaries. Send shit to
- Fraunhofer-IIS!! http://www.iis.fhg.de/departs/amm/layer3/
-
- So I tried both. L3Enc 1.0 in OS/2 was faaaast... actually, way too fast.
- You should get SPE (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/system/spe.zip)
- to reduce its priority to idle 0 if you want to do something when it's
- encoding. The DOS version L3Enc 2.72 was so forsaken slooowwww...
- especially with the bogus -hq option (is it just eating CPU cycles for the
- fun of it or what?).
-
- After listening them on my $40 headphones, I couldn't see a single
- difference (err, see below) between the original WAV, and either MP3...
- well, maybe I should try some $100 headphones.
-
- There is one thing though that might restraint you from using L3Enc 1.0...
- it inverses the right and left channel, DOH!!! So I guess it's God damn
- slow L3Enc 2.x for DOS that wins.

- leech110.zip (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/new/leech110.zip)

-
- This is a CD grabber with dijittering capabilities, so that means you won't
- get those clicks when grabbing some CD music anymore.
-
- The only real problem with this program, is that it doesn't have an option
- to output the file in RAW mode. Instead, it insists on putting an OS/2 WAV
- header, which L3Enc doesn't like (either you ignore it and you get 42
- bytes of garbage in front of your MP3, or L3Enc doesn't recognized it as a
- Windows WAV header). Already asked the author about this, so expect a 1.20
- version soon. :)
