- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.4. How do I...? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This section describes the basic practices and procedures common to all EmTec
- applications. It also offers answers to some frequently asked questions
- regarding EmTec FTP.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.5. Change Fonts and Colors within Applications ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To change the font in most windows in EmTec applications, open the OS/2 System
- Setup group and select the Font Palette. Then using the right mouse button,
- drag the desired font from the palette and drop it on the desired window.
-
- To change the background color of most application windows, you can open the
- color palette and using the right mouse button, drag the desired color from the
- palette and drop it on the desired window.
-
- To change the foreground (text) color of most application windows, repeat the
- step above, but this time, press and hold the "Ctrl" on the keyboard while
- performing the drag-and-drop operation.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.6. Resetting Colors to System Default ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If you want to reset the window colors in an application to the default colors
- you use in your operating system, just delete the INI file in the directory
- where the application resides (eg. c:\ens\ftp\ftp.ini).
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.7. Create a Debugging Log File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- All EmTec applications, support the generation of a debugging file. Run the
- application, but specify the "-l" command-line option. This creates a .log
- file with the same name as the application you are running. If you are
- experiencing problems with a EmTec application and you want to report these
- problems to EmTec, always create a log file file and e-mail it to us, with your
- problem report.

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. Introduction to FTP ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- EmTec FTP is a multi-threaded 32-bit OS/2 application which can interact with
- servers to read and write files using File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
-
- The program provides capabilities to receive and send ASCII or binary files,
- and connects to most types of servers. File and directory transfers can be
- performed using simple drag-and-drop selection.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.3. Getting a Quick Start ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This section will guide you through a quick start of EmTec FTP. If you want to
- read more detailed information, please refer to the section concerning FTP
- Windows
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.3.1. Getting up and running ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To start FTP, you can double click on the FTP Workplace Shell Object for the
- program, created in the EmTec folder during the installation.
-
- Alternatively, from a command window, you may change directories to the EmTec
- BIN directory and type "FTP<Enter>". When the program starts, it will
- automatically display the server phonebook, which will initially be empty.
-
- The first time you run the program, you will need to set your preferences in
- the configuration notebook, so close the phonebook for the time being. From
- the main control panel window select the option to configure FTP. Enter the
- required data in the configuration notebook and close it.
-
- Now you can add a server to the phonebook. From the main control panel, select
- the "connect" option. When the phonebook appears, press the "Add" button and
- fill in the description, address and login information for the desired FTP
- server. Press "OK" when this information has been correctly entered.
-
- When you are ready to connect to the server, press the "Connect" button. This
- will display the connection window, which is divided in half. The left half of
- the window display file information about your computer. The right window,
- after a period of time, will display file information from the server.
-
- You can change directories in either window by double clicking of the desired
- directory name from the list. Once you have set both file windows as desired,
- you can download a file or a directory from the server by right-clicking on the
- file or the directory and holding that mouse button down. Now drag the mouse
- pointer to the left window and release the right mouse button. You will see
- the transfer indicator at the bottom of the connection window begin to move,
- indicating that the file or directory is being transferred.
-
- You can also select multiple files or directories for transfer.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4. Command-line Arguments ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- There are several command-line parameters recognized by FTP.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.1. Configuring a different server (-s) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The -s option permits you to specify the server on the command line be entering
- a string such as "-sserver.here.com". You can also omit the -s and simply
- specify the server name to make a specific server connection.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.2. Creating a debugging log (-l) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The -l option enables debug data logging. The log file is used when reporting
- software bugs to EmTec. If you experience a crash, rerun FTP with the -l
- option specified and attempt to reproduce the crash. If you can, send the
- created FTP.LOG file to EmTec along with a description of the problem. You
- should not use the option during normal use as it degrades performance
- slightly.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5. FTP Windows ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This sections details the various windows you will use to access data using
- the FTP client program.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.1. The FTP Control Panel ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The FTP Control Panel is the main control center for FTP. From here you can
- display the server phonebook, the invoke configuration notebook or exit the
- program.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.1.1. FTP Control Panel Toolbar ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Connects FTP to another server - leaves all other connections
- intact.
- Opens the configuration notebook
- Display context sensitive help
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.1.2. Select FTP Server Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Choose the server you wish to connect to or configure a FTP server.
-
- Buttons at bottom of the window are:
-
- Add Add a server to the servers list.
- Edit Edit an existing server configuration.
- Remove Remove the selected server from the servers list.
- Help Display context sensitive help.
- Cancel Close the Select FTP Server window.
- Connect Connect to the selected server.
-
- Connect To entry field shows currently selected server. You can change type of
- remote server by selecting appropriate type from Type list box. It is possible
- to enable or disable login throught firewall by checking Login throught
- firewall check box.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.2. The Configuration Notebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- FTP uses a CUA compliant notebook control for all of its configuration. The
- first time you run FTP, you will need to display the configuration notebook to
- set up the program to suit your needs.
-
- The notebook contains two pages for configuration information. These are
- listed below:
-
- General
- Contains the configuration for the user settings of the program. This
- includes such information as your e-mail address, display sorting
- characteristics, etc.
-
- Firewall
- Contains the configuration for any proxy (firewall) server that may be in
- place at your site.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.2.1. General Configuration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Here are descriptions of available options:
-
- Query local file deletes
- Clicking this option forces FTP to prompt you when local files or
- directories are about to be deleted.
- It is recommended to leave the option checked.
-
- Query remote file deletes
- Clicking this option forces FTP to prompt you when remote files are about
- to be deleted
-
- Always maintain connection
- Clicking this option forces the server to remain connected until manually
- disconnected. Most servers will automatically disconnect if your
- connection is left idle for a period of time. This option prevents this
- from occurring.
-
- Note: It is done by sending NOOP ftp command to remote server every 60
- seconds. Some servers consider NOOP command as an idle command and
- close connection after a period of time.
-
- Save Real File Names
- Clicking this option forces Emtec FTP to save real names of downloaded
- files in the 'realname.___' file if the remote name was converted in order
- to store it on the local file system. For example the convertion happens
- when you download files from an Unix ftp server, where file names can be up
- to 512 symbols length, to a local drive with FAT file system, where file
- names can have only 8 symbols length. The 'realname.___' file consists of
- lines like the one below.
-
- local.file.name=remote.file.name
-
- Example of 'realname.___':
-
- freebsd.mar=freebsd.core.markers
-
- Display FTP connection console
- This option controls the presence of the console window which accompanies
- the connection window. Click it on to enable the console window. This
- option will take the next time a server window is opened.
-
- Local file overwrite warning
- Enabling this option forces FTP to warn you if you are about to overwrite
- an existing local file.
-
- Audible tone when transfer complete
- Enabling this option instructs FTP to issue a three level audible tone when
- all of the current file transfers (uploads or downloads) have been
- completed.
-
- Keep FAT File Names Upper Case
- Enabling this option instructs Emtec FTP to keep FAT file names upper case
- when the files are uploaded to a remote. Disabling this option forces Emtec
- FTP to convert FAT file names to lower case.
-
- Keep download timestamp
- This option controls the timestamp applied to downloaded files. If set,
- the timestamp the of original server file is applied. If this option is
- not selected, the downloaded file's timestamp will be based on the current
- system time.
-
- Connection window toolbar
- This option controls the presence of a toolbar in the connection window(s)
-
- Document window toolbar
- This option controls the presence of a toolbar in the document window(s)
-
- E-Mail address
- Fill this field with your e-mail address. This data is used as a password
- when you log into a server anonymously. If the field is not filled then
- 'eftp@' will be used as the anonymous password.
-
- Default local directory
- Fill this field with the local directory the program default to if you have
- not specifically set one for a phonebook entry.
-
- Sorting
- This panel controls the sort order of the local and remote windows.
-
- Note: Some servers do not publish date information. In these cases no
- date sorting will occur.
-
- Default File View
- This panel controls the default view used for file display windows. You
- have the option of displaying a detail view or simply the icons and
- filenames. Also, this panel gives you the option of using large or small
- icons for the display.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.2.2. Firewall Configuration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Firewall Configuration
- If you need to connect to an FTP server through a firewall (proxy host),
- you should enter the address, username and password of the firewall server
- in the Firewall Configuration Notebook page.
-
- To enable logging to a remote server through the specified firewall, you
- must have the "Enable firewall login" option selected for each required
- server entry in the FTP phone book.
-
- Passive Mode
- The Use passive mode checkbox in the Firewall Configuration Notebook page
- sets default mode for FTP connections.
- Passive mode means that remote server will not establish data connection to
- your machine by itself; only your machine will establish connections.
- The passive mode allows to work with a firewall, gateway or a system that
- utilizes IP masquerading.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.3. The FTP Server Phonebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This section describes how to setup and use FTP Server Phonebook.
-
- The Server phonebook pops up any time the connection button is pressed (or the
- associated main menu option is selected), or at program startup if you haven't
- specified a server on the command line.
-
- The phonebook contains a list at the top of the screen and a single-line edit
- control below. As items are selected in the list, the associated Internet
- address will be displayed in the "Connect To" edit line.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.3.1. Connecting to a server not in the FTP phonebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Servers do not have to be listed in the server phonebook in order to make a
- connection to them. The bottom portion on the phonebook window contains three
- user configurable controls.
-
- The text in the "Connect To" edit line can be selected and overwritten
- specifying the desired server address. If you have defined a firewall server
- and it is required for the connection, click the "Enable firewall login"
- option.
-
- You can also configure the type of server if you know it. This is important
- particularly for connections through a firewall server. If you do not know
- what type of server you are connecting to, leave the setting at the "Auto
- Detect" default.
-
- Pressing the "Connect" button will then initiate a connection to the specified
- server. Once the connection is made, the login dialog is displayed, prompting
- you to enter a username and password, as well as option local and remote
- directories.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.3.2. Adding new servers to the FTP phonebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- New servers can be added to the server phonebook by pressing "Add" button. This
- will cause FTP to display a server creation dialog so you can enter the
- information for the new server.
-
- You must enter a server name string and server address, but the remaining
- information is optional. You can specify a login ID and password which will be
- used to log you into this server. The password will displayed as "*" character
- for security reasons.
-
- The "server type" drop down list permits you to configure the type of server.
- Auto Detect, the default, will work for most applications. However, if you are
- required to connect through a firewall server, you should set this field
- correctly.
-
- You can also specify local and remote directories to be set after a connection
- is established. These fields help speed up login operations - If there is a
- particular directory on you PC that you would like to use for storing
- downloads, or directory on the remote server which you use frequently, you can
- enter these directories into the local and remote directory fields. If you do
- not specify a remote directory, you will be placed in the default directory
- specified by the server when you log in. If you do not specify a local
- directory, FTP will use the current drive\directory.
-
- If you are required to log into remote servers through a firewall, you can
- click the "Enable firewall login" option to perform this additional step. You
- must also configure the Firewall server information in the configuration
- notebook before this operation will be performed.
-
- If you need Login Dialog to be displayed every time you are logging to this
- server, check the Show Login dialog for the server checkbox.
- The dialog allow you to change user name, password, account, remote/local
- directories and connection mode for current connection.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.3.3. Editing servers in the FTP phonebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Server phonebook entries can be edited or modified by selecting the desired
- server from the phone list, and then click the right mouse button. This will
- display the server information dialog and permit you to edit any field.
-
- If you change the server name field, the entry will be cloned (i.e. a new
- server entry will be added to the phonebook). This is handy for quickly adding
- new server entries based on one currently in the phonebook.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.3.4. Removing servers from the FTP phonebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- A server can be removed from the phonebook by selecting it from the list and
- then pressing the "Remove" button. This eliminates it from the list
- immediately and updates the server data file maintained by FTP.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.4. Refused Connections and Ring Again Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- From time to time a server may become too busy. Typically the server will
- refuse any attempted connections.
-
- EmTec FTP will display a dialog box informing you that it is unable reach the
- server you selected. This dialog box gives you the option to keep trying to
- connect until the connection is made.
-
- This "ring again" feature is useful for getting a connection to busy servers.
- If you have the console window enabled, you will be able to see the connections
- being attempted.
-
- If after several attempts a connection is impossible, this dialog will be
- displayed again giving you the option to keep trying or to abort the attempt.
-
- Pressing OK button will close the connection.
-
- Note: The Ring Again feature may be erratic is a connection is made through a
- firewall server.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.5. The Login Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Enter the desired username and password, or right-click in the "Username" field
- or leave the Username and Password fields blank to log in anonymously.
-
- Enter the desired remote and local directories used for the connection.
-
- Set connection mode for the connection by checking the 'Use passive mode'
- checkbox.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.6. The Connection Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The connection window is displayed when a new server connection is performed.
- It is actually a collection of smaller child windows, primarily, the local and
- remote transfer windows, a toolbar.
-
- Along the bottom of the server window you will find a percent complete
- indicator for file transfers, status line to tell what processes are active, a
- transfer rate indicator to display the average rate of file transfers and an
- ETA indicator to tell you in hours, minutes and seconds when the transfer of
- the current file is estimated to complete.

-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5.6.2. Local and Remote Windows ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The local file display on the left hand side of the connection window and the
- remote file display on the right, share many commonalities. Both will show you
- a list of files in the current respective directories, and you can use the
- mouse to manipulate each of them.
-
- Files can be multiply selected or deselected for transfer by holding the <Ctrl>
- and <Shift> keys and clicking with the left mouse button.
-
- Double clicking on directory entry will cause the local window to change to the
- selected directory and refresh.

- FTP permits you to select files for download and add them to a download list.
- When files are added to this list they are not downloaded immediately as they
- are with the "Get" option. This give you the ability to select files from
- various directories and download them all at once rather than one-by-one as
- most other FTP clients require.
-
- You can edit the download list by selecting the "Edit download list" option in
- the remote window menu. This permits you delete selected files from your bulk
- download, and will also give you a total byte count for the downloads you have
- selected.

- Before you report a bug, please check the known bugs section to avoid multiple
- bug reports. Please make bug reports as clear as possible. One crucial point
- in fixing bugs is that we must be able reproduce them. So, if possible, please
- include step by step instructions of how to make the bug appear.
-
- Also, please try to find circumstances under which the problem does or does not
- arise (eg. it happens only with a certain kind of ftp server, or only after
- using a certain function in the news client, etc.). And, if possible, include
- the information if the problem did start with a certain version (e.g. V4.5
- still worked but in versions later than 4.6 it do not).
-
- The more information you can provide about the problem, the better the chances
- are that it can be fixed soon. Last but not least, please make sure that you
- are using the latest version (check our web pages [see below]).
