  1.                                 Scanning speed

  3. Users of F-PROT 2.x will probably notice that version 3.0 is in many cases
  4. slower than the old scanner.
  5.  
  6. We are working on improvements that should speed the scanner up, but for
  7. now, we suggest that you consider the following tips:
  8.  
  9.   * Scanning of compressed executables (/PACKED) should not be enabled by
  10.     default when you are doing a routine scan.  We recommend that it is only
  11.     used when scanning new software before installation, and when cleaning
  12.     up a virus infection.
  13.  
  14.   * The same applies to scanning inside ZIP/ARJ archives (/ARCHIVE).  Viruses
  15.     will not "creep" inside them, so if they are scanned initially and found
  16.     to be virus-free, there is no point in scanning them over and over.
  17.  
  18.   * If all your Word/Excel files have the standard DOC/DOT and XL? file
  19.     name extensions, you should just use "Standard file extensions",
  20.     instead of "Ignore document extensions" (/TYPE).  This will speed up
  21.     the scan, as the scanner now does not have to check every file to see
  22.     if it is a Word/Excel file.

  24.   * Doing a "Dumb" scan of all files forces the scanner to scan every data
  25.     file as if it was a program, which is usually just a waste of time.  The
  26.     primary reason this option is provided is that certain anti-virus
  27.     testers have renamed the COM/EXE files in their virus collections to
  28.     something like VOM/VXE, and if we do not provide a way to scan "all"
  29.     files, we will get an artificially low score in their tests.  We do not
  30.     like this, but we are forced to offer this option.  However, using it
  31.     is generally a "dumb" thing to do.
