- Section 2: How WProtect works as a client with LANDesk
- Virus Protect for Windows NT Server
- ********************************************************
-
- When LANDesk Virus Protect v1.7 is installed to a Windows NT
- server, the WProtect client setup files are copied to the
- WIN95 subdirectory off the default installation directory.
- Inside the WIN95 subdirectory are two directories named DISK1
- and DISK2.
-
- The DISK1 and DISK2 directories contain the files needed
- to set up WProtect on a client workstation connected to the
- server. The setup procedure is explained in detail below.
-
- When you install WProtect off the network, it's configured
- to notify the server when a virus is found and to automatically
- update its pattern file from the server. Also, any virus events
- from the clients are sent to the server's log file (NT Event
- Viewer).
-
-
- ********************************************************
- Section 3: How WProtect works as a client with LANDesk
- Virus Protect for NetWare
- ********************************************************
-
- When LANDesk Virus Protect v4.0 is installed to a NetWare
- server, the WProtect client setup files are copied to the
- WIN95 subdirectory off the default installation directory.
- Inside the WIN95 subdirectory are two directories named DISK1
- and DISK2.
-
- The DISK1 and DISK2 directories contain the files needed to
- set up WProtect on a client workstation connected to the server.
- The setup procedure is explained in detail below.
-
- When you install WProtect off the network, it's configured
- to notify the server when a virus is found and to automatically
- update its pattern file from the server. Also, any virus events
- from the client are sent to the server's log file.
-
-

- Section 4: Client setup procedures
- ********************************************************
-
- Before installing:
-
- 1) Remove any previous versions of WProtect (beta, preview,
- or released) from your workstation.
-
- 2) Close all applications.
-
- You can now install over the network from the server,
- from the LANDesk Virus Protect CD, or two disks.
-
- NOTE: You must install WProtect from the server (not CD)
- to receive/send notifications and automatically download
- the updated pattern file. When installed from the server,
- WProtect is self-configured to point to the server and
- directory location for alerts and pattern files.
-
-
- To install WProtect from a Windows NT server running
- LANDesk Virus Protect 1.7:
-
- 1) From File Manager, access the network directory
- where WProtect is stored (the default is
- \\SERVERNAME\LDVPHOME, where SERVERNAME is the name
- of the server running LANDesk Virus Protect). If you
- don't know where this path is, contact your network
- administrator.
-
- 2) Go to the WIN95\DISK1 subdirectory.
-
- 3) Double-click SETUP.EXE and follow the prompts.
-
-
- To install WProtect from a NetWare server running
- LANDesk Virus Protect 4.0:
-
- 1) From File Manager, access the Virus Protect home directory
- on the server running LANDesk Virus Protect. For a default
- installation, this would be:
-
- <SERVERNAME>\SYS:\LANDESK\VPROTECT
-
- (where SERVERNAME is the name of the server running LANDesk
- Virus Protect)
-
- If you don't know which server to access, contact your network
- administrator.
-
- 2) Go to the WIN95\DISK1 subdirectory.
-
- 3) Double-click SETUP.EXE and follow the prompts.
-
-
- To install WProtect from the LANDesk Virus Protect CD or
- from two 3.5" high-density disks:
-
- 1) Insert the CD. From the CLIENTS\WIN95\DISK1 directory,
- run SETUP.EXE and follow the prompts.
-
- OR
-
- 1) Insert the CD and copy the WIN95 subdirectory files
- to two 3.5" disks. Then, from the workstation you want
- to install WProtect to, insert Disk 1 into the floppy drive.
- Run SETUP.EXE and follow the prompts.
-
- Note: Clients attached to a protected server have automatic
- pattern updates. If you install the client software on a
- stand-alone PC, however, you will not have automatic pattern
- updates. You must go to the following Internet location to
- download the latest pattern file:
-
- http://www.intel.com/comm-net/sns/showcase/netmanag/ld_virus.

- Section 5: Known issues / frequently asked questions
- ********************************************************
-
- INSTALLING WPROTECT:
-
- By default, WProtect is installed to your startup group
- and to the program group "Intel LANDesk WProtect for
- Windows 95." Within the program group, you'll
- find the following items:
-
- 1. The Uninstall utility, which removes WProtect from your
- computer.
-
- 2. The Rescue Disk utility, which creates an emergency rescue
- disk you can use to recover your hard drive data
- in the event of a virus attack. Information regarding
- your system is saved to this disk, along with VSCAND.EXE
- (a DOS-based virus scanner).
-
- 3. The LDVP95.EXE file, which is the file that lauches WProtect.
-
- NOTE: WProtect is a workstation-only program. DO
- NOT install LDVP95.EXE to a network drive, or you may
- experience problems when you execute the program.
-
- REINSTALLING WPROTECT:
-
- If you ever want to reinstall WProtect, you must stop the
- real-time scan before reinstalling. Otherwise, the setup
- program will be unable to execute. To stop real-time
- scanning, right-click on the WProtect icon (located
- in the lower-right corner of your Windows 95 task bar) and
- click Exit.
-
- ENABLING AUTOMATIC PATTERN SHARING:
-
- If you installed WProtect from a Windows NT or NetWare server
- running the LANDesk Virus Protect server software, WProtect is
- configured to automatically update the virus pattern file
- during startup.
-
- If WProtect isn't configured to automatically update the pattern
- file (for example, if you installed off the CD), WProtect
- continues using the original pattern file, which quickly
- becomes outdated. (An outdated pattern file is unable to
- identify the latest viruses.)
-
- To enable automatic pattern sharing, open the Startup Scan
- Options dialog within WProtect. In the Location text box,
- specify the network path where Virus Protect stores the pattern
- file on the NetWare or Windows NT server. If you don't know the
- correct path, contact your network administrator. WProtect
- will save the path location you specify.
-

- HOW E-MAIL NOTIFICATION WORKS
-
- This automated one-way Internet mailing list enables
- Intel to send information to a large group of people
- using Internet e-mail. You must have an e-mail account
- via an Internet service provider such as CompuServe*,
- Prodigy*, America Online*, or another system that offers
- Internet e-mail accounts.
-
- The only messages users may send to the list are to
- subscribe to or to remove themselves from the list.
- Since the mailing list is automated, incoming messages that
- do not conform to the format described below are ignored.
- The frequency of messages you receive will be on an as
- needed basis, but probably will not exceed two or three
- messages a month.
-
- To subscribe to the mailing list:
-
- 1. Using the e-mail account to which you would like
- the messages to come, create a new e-mail message
- to this address:
- landesk-virus-protect-request@mailbag.intel.com
-
- 2. On the first line of the body of the message enter:
- subscribe landesk-virus-protect
-
- 3. Send your message. Later, you will receive a welcome
- message from the automated list, telling you that youÆve
- successfully been added to the LANDesk Virus Protect
- mailing list.
-
- To remove yourself from the list:
-
- 1. Using the e-mail account from which you originally
- subscribed to the list, create a new e-mail message to
- this address:
- landesk-virus-protect-request@mailbag.intel.com
-
- 2. On the first line of the body of the message enter:
- unsubscribe landesk-virus-protect
-
- 3. Send your message. Your e-mail address is removed.
