- Client Personality Styles 16-Bit Software
- to run on Windows 3.1x and Windows 95
- Written by Bob Delaney, Siris Consulting

- * PROBLEMS, SUGGESTIONS AND HINTS *
- ***********************************
-
- To install on your system:
- 1. If you are using a Setup diskette, follow this procedure
- a. For Windows 3.1 and 3.11
- * Insert the diskette into your computer, usually drive A:
- * In Windows 3.1x Program Manager, choose File, Run
- * Choose Browse, and select the appropriate disk drive
- from the Drives list box
- * Choose and run the file SETUP.EXE to install the
- Siris Consulting Client Personality Styles software
- on your system.
- b. For Windows 95
- * Press the Start button, and choose Settings
- * In the Settings folder, choose Control Panel
- * Open Control Panel, and select Add/Remove Programs
- * Follow the Windows 95 Setup Wizard to install the
- Siris Consulting Client Personality Styles software
- on your system.
-
- 2. If these files have been archived in a .ZIP file
- a. Create an empty directory on your hard disk, for example,
- C:\STYLEZIP
- b. Unzip all the files in the archive file STYLES16.ZIP into
- your newly-created directory
- c. Depending on whether you are running Windows 3.1x or
- Windows 95, follow the steps outlined above in 1a or 1b,
- substituting the hard disk letter and directory for the
- floppy disk drive, for example, C:\STYLEZIP instead of A:
- d. When the Setup process is complete, and you have verified
- that the Client Personality Styles software is running
- properly, you can safely delete this temporary directory,
- and all its contents from your hard disk.
-
- 3. If you are having trouble with the install procedure, the
- difficulty may be one of the following:
- a. Most Windows setup or install programs behave in an
- unpredictable manner when you use a Windows shell other than
- Program Manager (in Windows 3.1x) or Explorer (in Windows 95).
- To install your software properly, you should temporarily
- disable any other Windows shell you may be running, and use
- either Windows 3.1x Program Manager or Windows 95 Explorer.
- b. To disable other Windows shell programs, first make a copy of
- your SYSTEM.INI file. If you are not sure how, enter the
- Windows directory (usually C:\WINDOWS) from the DOS prompt, and
- enter this command:
- copy SYSTEM.INI SYSTEM.CPS
- * Now, in case something goes wrong, you have a backup copy of
- your current SYSTEM.INI file.
- * Using Windows NotePad, or another ASCII file editor, edit your
- SYSTEM.INI file as shown below. For example, if your shell is
- Norton Desktop for Windows, you will find a line in the
- SYSTEM.INI file which reads as follows:
- shell=NDW.EXE
- * Temporarily disable that line by 'commenting it out' with a
- semicolon, like this:
- ; shell=NDW.EXE
- * If the Windows Program Manager shell line is either missing
- or has been commented out, add it, or re-enable it by removing
- the semicolon. There should now be a line in your SYSTEM.INI
- file which reads:
- shell=PROGMAN.EXE
- * Save the SYSTEM.INI file, and exit Windows normally. Then
- re-enter Windows. You should now be running Program Manager.
- * Your Client Personality Styles setup program and application
- should run normally.
- c. The above procedure should allow you to properly install most
- Windows software applications that fail when you use a Windows
- shell other than PROGMAN.EXE.
- * To re-enable your other Windows shell program, just reverse
- the above procedure, commenting out with a semicolon the line
- shell=PROGMAN.EXE
- * Now uncomment the line which refers to your shell program,
- for example shell=NDW.EXE in the case of Norton Desktop
- for Windows.
- d. If the Setup Program just won't work for you no matter what you
- do, you can manually extract the files, using EXPAND.
- * The EXPAND.EXE is contained on the disk (or in the .ZIP file),
- and you will likely find a copy of EXPAND.EXE in your Windows
- and/or DOS directories if you are running DOS 6.x and
- Windows 3.1x.
- * Issue the following commands at the DOS prompt:
- EXPAND A:CMDIALOG.VB_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CMDIALOG.VBX
- EXPAND A:COMMDLG.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\COMMDLG.DLL
- EXPAND A:THREED.VB_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\THREED.VBX
- EXPAND A:VBRUN300.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBRUN300.DLL
- * If you are running the setup files from a directory other
- than A:, substitute that directory name, for example, C:\CPSSETUP.
- * If your Windows system files are on a different drive, or in
- a different directory other than C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, substitute
- that name, for example N:\WIN31\SYSTEM if you are on a network.
- e. Choose or create a directory in which the Client Personality
- Styles software will be installed. The default is C:\SIRIS
- * Switch to the new directory, for example CD\SIRIS
- * Issue the following commands at the DOS prompt:
- EXPAND A:STYLES16.EX_ C:\SIRIS\STYLES16.EXE
- EXPAND A:STYLES16.HL_ C:\SIRIS\STYLES16.HLP
- * Substitute drive and directory names if needed.
- f. Exit Windows normally, and re-enter Windows.
- g. From Program Manager, open a Program Group in which you want the
- software to be. Then choose File, New in Program Manager.
- h. Choose Browse, and find the file STYLES16.EXE in whatever directory
- you put it. Click Ok
- i. Call the new Program Item Client Personality Styles, and click Ok
- j. Your software should be set up and ready to run. If you created a
- temporary directory on your hard disk from which you installed
- the files, you can now safely delete that directory and all
- its contents.
-
- 4. a. This version of the Personality Styles software features a full
- on-line Windows help file. It will run under Windows 95.
- b. This software looks best when run at a monitor resolution of
- 800 x 600 or higher. If your monitor supports a resolution greater
- then 640 x 480, you should install the driver and use the higher
- resolution. In Windows 3.1x, go into your Main Program Group and
- run Setup. In Windows 95, simply right click anywhere on the
- desktop, and select Properties, and then Settings.
- c. Yes, a 32-bit version written specifically for Windows 95 and
- Windows NT is now available. Contact Bob Delaney (see below) and
- request a copy.
- d. If you have suggestions, or discover a glitch, please advise the
- author. You'll receive an amended copy of Personality Styles for
- your assistance and your trouble.
