  38. I. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION.

  40. ImgViewer/16 is a Windows program for viewing and printing 
  41. digital images in a variety of standard formats.  Image formats 
  42. supported include GIF, .BMP, PCX, TGA, TIF, and .JPG. GIF and 
  43. PCX provide compression of 256-color images, while .JPG 
  44. provides compression for 16-million color images, thus saving 
  45. disk space.
  46.  
  47. ImgViewer/16 has editing features and file conversion routines built 
  48. in, which allow you to change images to suit your needs.  You can 
  49. crop, resize, stretch, rotate, mirror, flip, sharpen, soften, extract 
  50. edges, negate and adjust brightness, contrast and gamma.
  51.  
  52. A quick Zoom Tool provides instant magnification of areas of an 
  53. image, for close inspection.
  54.  
  55. Full documentation is included in the form of a Windows Help file.  
  56. When you desire help, press your F1 function key for context-sensitive 
  57. help, or press the help button if you are in a dialog box.
  58.  
  59. ImgViewer/16 is shareware.  It is fully functional and provides 
  60. all features that are included in the registered version, but 
  61. it will "nag" non-registered users occasionally.  You are 
  62. entitled to evaluate the program for a period of 30 days, after 
  63. which you are expected to register to continue use.  When you 
  64. register you will receive a copy that includes a key file that 
  65. eliminates the nag screens.  
  66.  
  67. ImgViewer/16 contains functions which can read and write the .GIF format, 
  68. which contains compression technology covered by U.S. Patent No. 
  69. 4,558,302, owned by the Unisys corporation.  The author of ImgViewer/16 has 
  70. obtained a license from Unisys, and pays a royalty on each 
  71. sale, to use this technology. The following statement is 
  72. required by that license:
  73.  
  74.     "Use of this software is permitted only to the extent
  75.     reasonably required to determine whether to purchase
  76.     the software.
  77.  
  78.     "After payment is made, use of this software is limited
  79.     to use on only a single personal computer or
  80.     workstation which is not used as a server.  An
  81.     additional payment is required for each use on
  82.     another personal computer or workstation.
  83.  
  84.     "Only a single copy may be made of this software
  85.     solely for backup or archival purposes.  The software
  86.     may also be transferred to a single hard disk.

  88.     "Any use of this software in violation of the above is
  89.     not licensed.

  100. II. Program requirements.
  101.  
  102. ImgViewer/16 requires an IBM compatible 386 or better, running 
  103. Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT, with at least 8 megs of RAM 
  104. and VGA or better graphics.  Recommended: 486DX or better with an 
  105. accelerated graphics adapter.
  106.  
  107. Most operations require a mouse.
  108.  
  109. Graphics files can be quite large, particularly with true-color, so a 
  110. large hard disk is recommended.  ImgViewer/16 will require under 1 
  111. meg for program installation.
  112.  
  113. III. Installing ImgViewer/16
  114.  
  115. If you obtained ImgViewer/16 by downloading it from a computer 
  116. Bulletin Board (BBS) or another online source, one necessary 
  117. file may not have been included.  You will need a file called 
  118. VBRUN300.DLL, which is almost always available from any source 
  119. that would have ImgViewer/16.  Windows 95 includes 
  120. VBRUN300.DLL, but earlier Windows versions do not.  On BBS 
  121. systems the file will usually be called VBRUN300.ZIP or 
  122. VBRUN3.ZIP.  If you obtained the program on disk, the file 
  123. should be included.  If it is missing, contact the supplier of 
  124. the program.  Versions purchased from the author will always 
  125. include VBRUN300.  If you are installing VBRUN300 separately, 
  126. it MUST be put in the \Windows\System directory.
  127.  
  128. To install ImgViewer/16, run the included setup program.  If the 
  129. program is on a floppy disk, you can use File/Run in the Program 
  130. Manager and type a:setup or b:setup, whichever drive is involved.  
  131. You can use the same technique to run setup from a directory on your 
  132. hard drive by supplying the full path, such as c:\temp\ivsetup.  
  133. Alternatively you can use File manager to find the files and 
  134. double-click on IVSETUP.EXE.
  135.  
  136. Windows 95 users can use the "Add/Remove Programs" item in the 
  137. Control Panel to find and start IVSETUP.
  138.  
  139. IV.  Getting Started.
  140.  
  141. Double-click the ImgViewer/16 icon to start the program.  If this is 
  142. not a registered copy you will see a shareware "nag" screen.  This 
  143. screen will only be repeated every 10 days, so as to not unduly 
  144. interfere with your operation of the program.  Click OK, or you may 
  145. choose to print an order form.

  147. When you see the main program window, Click the "folder" icon at the 
  148. left end of the icon bar, and then browse for image files to view.  
  149.  
  150. If you would like to alter the image, most of the items in the Image 
  151. menu are simple.  Browsing the help file will provide you with more 
  152. information on the image-altering functions.   
  153.  
  154. V.  FILES AND UNINSTALLING
  155.  
  156. When ImgViewer/16 is installed, a program (UNINSTAL.EXE) and a data 
  157. file (INSTALL.LOG) are placed in the ImgV16 directory.  The 
  158. following information is provided to aid in removing the 
  159. program in case those files are lost or damaged.
  160.  
  161. Files distributed with ImgViewer/16:
  162.  
  163. IVSETUP.EXE 
  164. This file contains all of the program files.  Running it will 
  165. install of the files where they belong, and will also produce a 
  166. record and program that can be used to uninstall this package. 
  167.  
  168. README.TXT 
  169. The text file you are reading now.  It is placed outside 
  170. the main install program so that it is readable before the 
  171. program is installed. 
  172.  
  173. VENDINFO.DIZ, FILEID.DIZ, VENDINFO.DOC
  174. Information files for shareware distributors and online 
  175. services.  These explain distribution rights and allowable 
  176. methods.
  177.  
  178. Files installed by ImgViewer/16:

  187. Registered users will have one additional file: IV16_REG.KEY.  
  188. This file must be in your ImgV16 directory, and will keep the 
  189. startup shareware screen from appearing.  If you upgrade to a 
  190. new version of ImgViewer/16, do not delete this file - it will work 
  191. with all future versions.

  193. Files required by ImgViewer/16:
  194.  
  195. VBRUN300.DLL 
  196. A "runtime" library for programs written in Visual Basic 3.0.  
  197. This file is almost always available from any source for 
  198. ImgViewer/16.  From on-line sources, look for VBRUN3.ZIP or 
  199. VBRUN300.ZIP.  It must be placed in your Windows\System 
  200. directory.
  201.  
  202. Files created by ImgViewer/16:
  203.  
  204. IMGV16.INI 
  205. This file contains your preferences so that the program can 
  206. startup with the same settings as you last used.
  207.  
  208. ImgViewer/16 also creates some temporary files with .TMP 
  209. extensions in the directory pointed to by your TEMP variable.  
  210. If there is no TEMP variable the files will be in the ImgV16 
  211. directory.  Under normal use, the program will clean these up 
  212. when it exits.  If the program crashes, it will clean them up 
  213. the next time it is run and then exited normally.
  214.  
  215. Uninstalling ImgViewer/16:
  216.  
  217. If the UNINSTAL.EXE program and INSTALL.LOG file have been left 
  218. intact in the ImgV16 directory, running the program will remove 
  219. all files that were installed with ImgViewer/16.  The 
  220. uninstaller does not know anything about the .INI file and 
  221. others created by the program, so those require manual 
  222. deletion. If the UNINSTAL program has been removed, use the 
  223. file list above to determine which files to remove.

  225. VI.  Troubleshooting.
  226.  
  227. If you have an image that ImgViewer/16 will not display, it may be in 
  228. a format that cannot be used.  There are some variations of .GIF and 
  229. .PCX that are known to make problems for ImgViewer/16.  There are 
  230. many non-standard versions of JPEG that will cause problems.  
  231. Virtually no tool supports all JPEG types, and ImgViewer/16 will 
  232. sometimes be able to read files that other viewers can't, and 
  233. vice-versa.

  235. VII. Obtaining images.
  236.  
  237. If you regularly use Computer BBS systems or online sources such as 
  238. Compuserve, America Online, or the Internet, you will find a wealth 
  239. of images that can be downloaded.  These images are usually in the 
  240. .GIF or .JPG formats to reduce download time.
  241.  
  242. The author is maintaining a small collection of his scans of his own 
  243. photos and those of users where permission has been granted.  It is 
  244. available by FTP from redshift.com/arcatpet/wwplus/images Files are in 
  245. .JPG format.  Thumbnails are available at the website

  248. VIII.  Getting future Upgrades.
  249.  
  250. When you order ImgViewer/16 from the author, you will receive a copy 
  251. of the latest version and an ownership key that permanently enables 
  252. the program.  That key file will work with future versions of the 
  253. program, so no upgrade fee will be required.
  254.  
  255. Recent versions of ImgViewer/16 can always be found on Compuserve in 
  256. several forums, including WINAV, GRAPHSUP, and PHOTOFORUM.  Current 
  257. versions are also posted to the author's America OnLine forum, 
  258. KeyWord: ArcataPet.

  263. Registered users who do not have online access may get a disk copy 
  264. from the author for a fee of $5 ($7 non-US).  Send a short note 
  265. indicating your registered status and requesting the latest copy.  
  266. Please use the same name under which you ordered originally.

  268. IX.  Purchase and Distribution.
  269.  
  270. ImgViewer/16 is shareware.  Free use is extended to any user 
  271. for an evaluation period of 30 days.  For use to be continued, 
  272. the program must be registered with the author.  Price is $25.00.  
  273. California residents please add $1.81 sales tax, and non-US 
  274. buyers should include $1.00 for airmail shipping.  All 
  275. funds should be drawn on a US Dollar account. A convenient form 
  276. for ordering is included in the Help file (and may be 
  277. printed from there).  North American users may order toll-free 
  278. by calling (800) 822-9085.

  282. As a purchase incentive, the author will provide on request two 
  283. free scanned images from your original prints or slides, when sent 
  284. with the order.

  286. Commercial use:  ImgViewer/16 may be used commercially, as long as there is 
  287. a registered copy for each computer/terminal that is using it.  
  288. Bulk licensing is available.

  290. You may freely distribute ImgViewer/16 as long as no fees are charged 
  291. for the program, and all necessary files are included.  Commercial 
  292. Shareware vendors should read the included VENDINFO.DIZ file for 
  293. details. If you are a registered user, do not distribute the file 
  294. IV16_REG.KEY, which identifies you as the user (This identification 
  295. shows up in the "About" box).
