INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
You'll want to keep your 10,000 Photos CD-ROM handy whenever you set out on a new desktop publishing or word processing project. There is no need to copy the images to your hard drive, but there are some tools you'll need to install before getting started. Just follow these simple steps:
1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Under Windows 3.1, choose the Run command from the Program Manager's File menu. Then, assuming your CD-ROM drive is Drive D, type d:\startup.exe. If you are running Windows 95, choose the Run command from the Start button. Then, assuming your CD-ROM drive is Drive D, type d:\startup.exe.
3. When you have read the license agreement that is produced, click the I Agree button.
4. A second window is produced, containing the default directory into which the software will be installed. We recommend that you accept the default by clicking the OK button. The installation may take a few minutes.
The installation program will install the Kudo image catalog software into a new directory named KUDOREAD, requiring approximately 3 MB of hard disk space, and create a new program group named 10,000 Photos. At the completion of the installation, you will need to restart your computer.
FINDING THE RIGHT IMAGE
The 10,000 Photos CD-ROM contains a number of image catalogs--one for each of more than 60 different categories. You can preview and select the right image for your use by opening the appropriate image catalog. To do so:
1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive, label side up.
2. If you are using Windows 95, click the Start button. From the Program menu, select the Kudo Catalog Reader ¿ program group. From the submenu that appears, choose Kudo Catalog Reader. If you are using Windows 3.1, double click the Kudo Catalog Reader ¿ program group item, then double click the Kudo Catalog Reader icon to start the program.
3. After the title screen is displayed, a blank window appears. From the menu bar, choose File, then select Open. In the dialog that is displayed, change the letter shown in the Drives menu to match that of your CD-ROM. (Usually D:, E:, or a higher letter.) In the Folders menu directly above, choose the Catalogs directory. Finally, double click on any file name listed to open that categories catalog.
Every image in the catalog is displayed as a thumbnail - a miniaturized representation of the full image. To see an individual image at a larger size, click an image thumbnail once to select it, then choose Display Original from the Image menu.
ADDING AN IMAGE TO YOUR DOCUMENT
Adding an image to your word processing, graphic editor, or page layout document that supports JPEG files is a snap. With many products, such as recent versions of Microsoft Word, Adobe PageMaker, and many others, you can simply click on the thumbnail of the image you wish to use, and "drag" it into your document. (Technically speaking, these programs are OLE 2.0 compliant.) If the program you are using to create your document does not allow you to do this, follow these instructions:
1. Click the thumbnail once to highlight the graphic you wish to use in your document. Click the "Info" button near the top of the window. A new window is displayed, which shows the path and name of the file. Note this information.
2. Switch to your word processing, graphics editor, or desktop publishing program, and choose the command that allows you to open or import a graphic image. (Some of the common programs are listed below.) When the Open or Import dialog box is displayed, select the CD-ROM, then select the Photos directory. (Not the Catalog directory.) Using the information you previously noted, select the correct folder and file. Click "Insert" or "OK" to import the graphic.

PRINTING YOUR DOCUMENT
Ready to print your document? Printing a document containing a photo or other graphic is just like printing any other document by following these steps.
Photos you've placed will always appear in your document when you view it on-screen. But certain programs will link the .JPG photo files to your document and require the files themselves in order to print the images properly.
In these cases, you'll need to insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive prior to printing. And if a service bureau will be printing your document, you may want to consider lending them the CD-ROM for output.
TROUBLESHOOTING
I can't seem to import images into my document. Most word processing and graphics programs rely on translators (sometimes called filters) to import images. Be sure that those translators are installed on your hard drive in the appropriate place. Please also note that Microsoft Works, PrintShop and PrintHouse may not support the JPEG (photo) file format.
Why can't I change the colors of the images? Word processing programs will place the entire image in your document. You will need a graphics program to edit the images.
Why don't my images print in color? You have most likely copied and pasted an image into your document instead of importing/inserting it.
For assistance in incorporating an image into your document, please call the publisher of the program you are using, for technical support. We have provided US telephone numbers, but there may be local telephone numbers, as well. See your program's user manual for details.
If you have questions about the images or catalogs, please call Focus Multimedia in the United Kingdom on (01889) 570156. One of our technicians will be pleased to help.
