SHAMEFUL BEHAVIOUR OF V COMMUNICATIONS INC.
-------------------------------------------
I wrote the patch included in this small package to help people
like me who are so unfortunate to use System Commander v3.0
produced by V Communications Inc. For those who don't
use System Commander just I will tell that it is a software
to manage many Operating Systems on one computer. The
version I installed on my computer is 3.0 and was released by
Generation X. I installed three Operating Systems and used
the program for about a month without problems. The bad
thing came when, one day, rebooting my computer appeared a
message from System Commander telling me (summing up):
- that the "evaluation period" of the program was finished (!!);
- that System Commander is not shareware;
- that System Commander is not downloadable from Internet
or any BBS;
- that if I legally bought the program this message only
results from damage of System Commander files and
consequently I have only to REINSTALL the program.
- that I have given the chance to boot from one of the
Operating Systems to reinstall System Commander.
- that if I want to buy System Commander I should pay $90
and contact V Communications Inc.
It seemed a "normal situation" of the program. But:
1) I DID NOT HAVE the chance to chose the Operating System
to boot from. System Commander booted ONLY from the
first Operating System;
2) I REINSTALLED the program and rebooting I found out that
NOTHING was changed! Again the message insinuating the
User is a thief!
3) I LOST FOR EVER the chance to access the other
Operating Systems!
These are the facts. Now we can do some comments about this
disgusting situation. The thing I do not tolerate is the
behaviour outlined from V Communications Inc. Indeed if a
Software house wants to build a protection for his software
this is moral and allowed. But what is dishonest and
immoral is that the program first let you install himself
than let you install many Operating Systems and when IT
DECIDE NOT TO WORK you LOSE ALL YOUR WORK. You could LOSE
MONTHS OF WORK, no matter, IT WILL DO.
How can V Communications think that the destruction of
months of work can push someone to buy his programs ?
How can V Communications think that his reputation can grow
when his programs destroy your work for only 90 miserable
dollars ?
How can V Communications think that such dishonest behaviour
is "good" for the sake of money ?
Fortunately, thanks to my back-up, I managed to rebuild my
system and to patch System Commander to never again do
this sort of "blackmail". The file PATCH.EXE will eliminate
the "blackmail". The patch is only suitable for version
3.0. It should be launched in your root directory and in
the directory where you installed System Commander (i.e.
all the directories that have the file SYSCMNDR.SYS). Note
that the file SYSCMNDR.SYS located in the root directory
must NOT have the hidden, system and read-only attribute
set. You should use the command:
ATTRIB -H -S -R SYSCMNDR.SYS
