  9. This Info should help to use the UBX-System in the proper way and to
  10. avoid problems which mostly origin from not knowing the basics. Let's
  11. start with practise. If you are interested in how UNBOX and the UBX-
  12. System works, see chapter 4 "Theory...".

  15. 1. Installing the UBX-System
  16.  
  17. If never used the UBX-System before create an empty directory (folder)
  18. called for example C:\UNBOX or C:\UBX. Copy to this directory the files
  19.  
  20. - UBXWIN.EXE  the main program
  21. - UBx_yz.EXE  a collection of various Unlockers
  22.  
  23. In UBX-Version V 1.8 the following Unlockers exist:

  25. - UB2_11.EXE
  26. - UB2_21.EXE
  27. - UB3_05.EXE
  28. - UB3_06.EXE
  29. - UB3_08.EXE
  30. - UB3_09.EXE
  31. - UB3_10.EXE
  32. - UB3_14.EXE
  33. - UB3_15.EXE
  34. - UB3_16.EXE
  35. - UB3_16A.EXE
  36. - UB3_17.EXE

  38. If you miss one or more Unlockers, don't worry. UBXWIN will work
  39. without problems, but you cannot unlock such files requiring the
  40. missing Unlocker. It is recommended to set all files to READ ONLY
  41. attribute and not to copy any other file to this directory. See
  42. later why...

  44. UBXWIN is written in Visual Basic (VB 3.0) and requires 3 more files
  45. located in your WINDOWS\ or WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory:
  46.  
  47. - VBRUN300.DLL
  48. - CMDIALOG.VBX
  49. - THREED.VBX
  50.  
  51. If using Win 95 or Win NT place them in the directory used for 16-bit
  52. applications. All 3 files are available free on the WEB. Search for
  53. Visual Basic pages and download. You need these files for all common
  54. VB 3.0 programs.

  57. 2. How to use the UBX-System
  58.  
  59. First you must have downloaded one or more files from UNBOX. Save them
  60. anywhere on your harddisk. Now run UBXWIN. First press the button
  61.  
  62. "Select File"
  63.  
  64. and you get a menue to search for the UNBOX-File you want to unlock.
  65. Select and you are back to UBXWIN. On top there are two message boxes
  66. showing
  67.  
  68. - the Filename you have selected
  69. - the detected Version (FileVersion number)
  70.  
  71. On the bottom you see a status line telling you what has happened.
  72. Have a look on the button "Start Unlock" and the option field "Unlocker"
  73. on the right hand. They are disabled if no UNBOX-File was selected.
  74. Now having selected a file many different messages are possible. If you
  75. are told "File is not in UNBOX Format !" nothing more happens. The file
  76. cannot be unlocked, of course.
  77.  
  78. But if a FileVersion was found you are shown which one, and one or more
  79. Unlocker options are enabled. Also the button "Start Unlock" is enabled.
  80. Something special is, if a FileVersion was found, but no appropriate
  81. Unlocker is known. So you are told "upgrade of UBX necessary". Since
  82. UBX-Version V 1.8 a special Test-Function has been added. You will see
  83. a before hidden button "Test" which, if pressed, enables ALL Unlocker
  84. option fields. Sometimes an older Unlocker will work with a new File-
  85. Version... but take care. Mostly it will not work and many errors are
  86. possible. See the FAQ below and read chapter 4 "Theory..." to understand
  87. what can happen if using a not fitting Unlocker to an UNBOX-File !
  88.  
  89. Now press "Start Unlock". You get a dialog showing the required free
  90. harddisk space and the choice to continue or cancel. If you continue
  91. the next step depends on the FileVersion. Versions below 3.1.6 always
  92. will open the UNBOX menue which you will also get if running the UNBOX
  93. file directly. If so select "Order by phone" and/or "Unlock now". Next
  94. screen aks for a password. Enter anything for the password and press
  95. "Unlock". Now the decrypting starts. Since FileVersion 3.1.6 the UNBOX
  96. dialog is skipped completely and the decrypting starts immediately.

  98. Anyway at the end a decrypted file is stored to the directory where
  99. your UBX-System is located. Sometimes you are asked wether to run the
  100. decrypted prgram now. Sometimes it starts without asking. This depends
  101. of the UNBOX-File and is not part of the UBX-System. Now you may under-
  102. stand why the UBX-System should be the only one stored in your UBX-
  103. directory and should be Read Only. Many errors may happen. But whatever
  104. happens: switch to your UBX-directory and check. And if something did
  105. not work, delete everything besides the UBX-System. If everything worked,
  106. move the decrypted file to another directory and continue to install
  107. the program.

  109. Mostly you will get an SFX-File (a selfexpanding program). But see FAQ
  110. for more info on that.

  112. To end UBXWIN just press "Quit".
  113.

  115. 3. Major faults running UBX and how to avoid
  116.  
  117. BETTER SWITCH OFF YOUR MODEM !!! 
  118.  
  119. If you have a modem switched on, delays of more than 60 seconds are
  120. expected before the Unlock Process really starts. This is because all
  121. UNBOX-Programs are designed to work with an Online connection. Running
  122. UBXWIN overrides this function but as soon as a modem is detected the
  123. UNBOX-File tries to connect until time out. So if really need your
  124. modem switched on: be patient !
  125.  
  126. DO NOT USE THE TEST BUTTON, if you are not familiar with all detailes
  127. of UBX-System. There will nothing happen to damage your hardware or
  128. software, but you may get many errors and must know what to do if such
  129. errors occure. Otherwise a later unlock of the same program may be
  130. impossible. So read chapter 4 "Theory..." and the "FAQ" thorougly.

  133. 4. Theory of UNBOX and the UBX-System
  134.  
  135. UNBOX is a system to encrypt (lock) software. The original software is
  136. encrypted and stored in one single EXE-file. This EXE-files consists of
  137. two parts: the "body" which is the encrypted software and the "header"
  138. which is in fact a program and placed at the beginning of the EXE-file. 
  139. So whenever you run the EXE-file the header-program is started, showing
  140. infos about the locked software and a choice of dialogs to unlock the
  141. software. Finally, when done what the header-program wants, what means
  142. basically the registerring by a Credit Card, it starts to decrypt the
  143. locked software of the body and saves it to a new file. This file is no
  144. longer locked and mostly is a selfexpanding file (SFX).
  145.  
  146. Older UNBOX-Versions only had an ONLINE-Dialog. In newer Versions the
  147. ONLINE dialog is a choice of four different ways to get a password.
  148. In the ONLINE dialog a unique serial number is shown everytime you
  149. start this dialog. Then you are asked to contact UNBOX with your datas
  150. (Name, Credit Card ...) and after verification the same you are given
  151. a unique password according to the serial number shown on the display.
  152.  
  153. The UBX-System is a tool to unlock 'UNBOX-encrypted' files without a
  154. password and without any patch to the original files. The main program
  155. UBXWIN is to select the file to be unlocked, to detect the version and
  156. to select a suitable Unlocker. The Unlocker itself is the program which
  157. does the real job to open the locked file and unlocks the same.
  158.  
  159. The complete unlocking process with UBXWIN goes like this:
  160.  
  161.  - create a temporary file 'U' in the UBX-directory 
  162.  - copy the selected file to the temporary file 'U' 
  163.  - start the selected Unlocker to decrypt 'U'  
  164.  
  165. IMPORTANT: the filename is only the single byte 'U' without extension,
  166. that means not 'U.EXE' but only 'U'. So if you want to test on your own:
  167.  
  168. Copy an UNBOX-File like "ABCDE.EXE" to a file called "U" into the same
  169. directory where the Unlockers are. Now run one of the Unlockers. But take
  170. care: if the Unlocker does not fit to the UNBOX-File you may get errors
  171. in the same way as if using the "Test" function of UBXWIN. The temporary
  172. file 'U' is wasting a lot of harddisk space. So when running UBXWIN and
  173. quit the same, the file 'U' always is deleted.

  176. 5. FAQ (Frequently asked questions)
  177.  
  178. Q. I get erromessages like "corrupt file" with any Unlocker.
  179. A. First try to run the UNBOX-File directly. If you get errors,
  180.    the UNBOX-File is corrupt or incomplete. Download again.
  181.  
  182. Q. The Selfexpander (built-in WinZip) does not work 
  183. A. This is NOT a problem of UBX but of the UNBOX-File itself. On
  184.    expanding problems cancel and use PKUNZIP manually. Recommended
  185.    syntax is

  187.      PKUNZIP -d FILENAME.EXE
  188.  
  189.    which expands including path infos, if required.
  190.  
  191. Q. After installing a decrypted file an additional password or
  192.    registration is asked for.
  193. A. Complain to UNBOX - this problem you also will have if unlocking
  194.    the file with a valid password and having paid for the same.
  195.  
  196. Q. The unlocked program does not work / showes a message like
  197.    "not enough memory" or has zero length.
  198. A. This may result of having used an Unlocker which does not fit to the
  199.    FileVersion of the UNBOX-File. Try another Unlocker. In few cases
  200.    UNBOX had upgraded the FileVersion without changing the Version
  201.    number.
  202.    But before complaining check all alternatives.
  203.  
  204. Q. I get two Unlockers enabled. Which one should I use ?
  205. A. Both will work, use the recommended first.
  206.  
  207. Q. I got many small TMP-Files like ~xxxxx.tmp
  208. A. Newer Unlockers do so. As always recommended you should have
  209.    installed a TMP directory like C:\TMP and set a variable
  210.    TMP=C:\TMP to get all    such TMP-Files to this directory.
  211.    Frequently switch to this directory and delete the TMP-Files.
  212.    See your DOS and WINDOWS manual for the subject.

  214. Q. I tried to unlock an UNBOX-File but got the message "Bla bla has
  215.    already been unlocked! It can be found in C:\XXX\YYYYYY.EXE"
  216. A. This mainly results from using the "Test" function. You have tried
  217.    to unlock but it did not work. Very often a file with the right
  218.    name is created and the result is either a corrupted file or a file
  219.    of zero length bytes. As long as such a filename is in your UBX-
  220.    directory, you cannot unlock again. So switch to your UBX-directory
  221.    and clean the same.
  222.  
  223. Q. After I pressed the button "Start Unlock" nothing happened.
  224. A. You have tried to use an Unlocker which is not in your UBX-directory.
  225.    Please note: UBXWIN never checks wether the Unlocker is there. If it
  226.    is missing nothing happens - thats all.
  227.  
  228. Q. Where from can I get older Unlockers / upgrade of UBXWIN ?
  229. A. Check Usenet (alt.cracks, alt.binaries.cracks ...) or post
  230.    a kind request to there. Please understand that I cannot post
  231.    directly nor mail to anyone. The distributing system with Usenet
  232.    is well established. So keep on watching.

  234. Q. I found a new FileVersion and ensured it did not work with any
  235.    known Unlocker.
  236. A. Please post to Usenet, subject "UNBOX - new Version". The info
  237.    should inform about Filename, Short Description of the prog like
  238.    "E-Mail for Kids" and FileVersion detected. Upgrades depend of
  239.    your feedback...

  241. Q. The Unlocker UBx_yz worked fine with a few programs, but sometimes
  242.    or mostly failed.
  243. A. This is a major problem when developping new Unlockers. I need many
  244.    UNBOX-Files to verify that the decrypting algorythm was fully under-
  245.    stood and cracked. Sometimes it works with a couple of files but
  246.    fails with the rest. As I cannot download the full stuff (and are
  247.    not interested at all) it may happen, that a new Unlocker is buggy.
  248.    So any feedback is wanted, but is only helpful with detailed info
  249.    on Filename and so on.

  251. Q. I used UB3_16A.EXE but did only work sometimes
  252. A. There was one buggy version out (the only one !!!) but 2 days later
  253.    the correct one was posted. You cannot see any difference. So try
  254.    to get the newer one.
