  13. INTRODUCTION

  16. This upgrade of Eudora Pro for Windows is only for
  17. Eudora Pro 3.0 and 3.0.1 users. You will not be able
  18. to install this upgrade unless you have Eudora Pro
  19. for Windows version 3.0 or 3.0.1 on your PC. Well, yes,
  20. this is what QualComm wants you to believe. But as a
  21. matter of fact the free Eudora Pro 3.02 upgrade is a 
  22. virtually complete installation package. This upgrade
  23. includes new spelling dictionaries for both British and
  24. American English, message plugins, and the complete 200 
  25. page manual in Adobe's Acrobat Reader format.
  26.  
  27. The only thing you need to do is to convince the upgrade
  28. installer that you have a genuine copy of Eudora Pro 3.0
  29. on your PC, and this is exactly what the included utility
  30. will help you do. The upgrade installer really doesn't care
  31. whether you have a working copy of version 3.0 or 3.01 on
  32. your system, nor does the upgrade itself require any of the
  33. files from previous versions. The upgrade installer only
  34. checks for the presence of a valid version 3.0 or 3.01
  35. eudora.exe file. The MAKEFAKE utility creates a fake version
  36. 3.0 eudora.exe file which will trick the installer into
  37. believing that you have a genuine copy of Eudora Pro 3.0
  38. (16 bit version) on your system.

  41. INSTRUCTIONS

  44. 1.   Get a copy of EUP302UP.EXE. Refer to the top of this
  45.      document for the URL's. Make absolutely sure that you
  46.      get the 4.2 Mb version. There may also be smaller files
  47.      but don't settle for those. You must have the 4.2 Mb file.
  48.  
  49. 2.   Run MAKEFAKE.EXE to create a fake copy of EUDORA.EXE.
  50.      This utility will not overwrite any existing eudora.exe
  51.      file in the same directory, so there's no danger of
  52.      inadvertently corrupting an existing Eudora installation
  53.      on your system.
  54.  
  55. 3.   If you intend to install Eudora Pro 3.02 from scratch,
  56.      create a directory where you want to install the program,
  57.      say, C:\EUDORA, and put the fake EUDORA.EXE file which
  58.      you just created in this directory. If you want to 'upgrade' 
  59.      any existing Eudora (Light, Pro 2.x, Demo 3.0x), FIRST make
  60.      a backup copy of your 'real' eudora.exe file, THEN copy the
  61.      fake EUDORA.EXE file to your Eudora directory.
  62.  
  63. 4.   Now run the Eudora Pro 3.02 Updater. Usually, the upgrade 
  64.      installer will find the fake EUDORA.EXE file. If it doesn't,
  65.      it will let you select a directory. In that case, select the
  66.      directory where you put the fake EUDORA.EXE file and the
  67.      installation will proceed.
  68.  
  69. 5.   If you did an 'upgrade', then you are finished and you
  70.      should be able to start using Eudora Pro 3.02 right away.
  71.      If you did a fresh install, however, there's one more step
  72.      you need to perform before you start configuring Eudora.
  73.      The upgrade installer installs only a very basic EUDORA.INI
  74.      file if no previous EUDORA.INI file was found. This basic 
  75.      EUDORA.INI file does not contain a [Mappings] section which 
  76.      is required for handling attachments. In order to let Eudora 
  77.      Pro 3.02 handle attachments correctly, you must copy the 
  78.      default EUDORA.INI file included with this patch to the 
  79.      directory which contains the freshly installed Eudora Pro 
  80.      3.02. You should also copy the included MOREHELP.HLP file 
  81.      to your Eudora directory, since the updater doesn't install 
  82.      this. Evidently, this help file isn't required for proper
  83.      operation of the program, but this file can be accessed
  84.      from the Eudora help menu. By putting this file in your
  85.      Eudora directory you will avoid an annoying 'file not found'
  86.      error message if you access the 'More Help' item from the help
  87.      menu. That's it !

  93. *    If you intend to use Eudora Pro 3.02 with a dialup account
  94.      (non-Winsock connection) you will need to create a suitable
  95.      dialup script. The sample scripts included with the retail
  96.      version of Eudora Pro 3.02 are not included with the upgrade,
  97.      but you can download all the sample scripts from:  
  98.      ftp://ftp.eudora.com/eudora/eudorapro/windows/extras/dialup/
  99.      as well as from the Eudora mirror sites.

  101. *    Additional spelling dictionaries (German, French, Spanish,
  102.      Portuguese, Italian) are also available for download. You
  103.      can get the spelling dictionaries from:
