  3. The following was 'picked up', and concerns the early success of
  4. the Sony PlayStation (PSX).

  7.      - all the early signs are indicating that the Playstation will be a 
  8.      tremendous success - Gerry Berekly (HMV) told me he has not seen such 
  9.      enthusiasm since the good old days of Sega & Nintendo domination.
  10.      
  11.      - apparently 30,000 units of hardware have been shipped out to 
  12.      multiples & indies in the UK and the kit is now officially out of 
  13.      stock with Sony who are desperately trying to reorder for despatch on 
  14.      *Friday 6th October.
  15.       
  16.      - HMV are trying to rotate kit throughout its stores inorder to keep 
  17.      'in stock' however this is proving impossible to do - in leading edge 
  18.      stores ie Level One the ratio of hardware purchased between 
  19.      Playstation & Saturn (using day one comparisons) is 34:1 in favour of 
  20.      Sony !!

  22.      - consumer purchasing patterns are showing 'multiple purchases' ie 
  23.      kit, 2 x games, memory card, controller, etc.
  24.      
  25.      - not uncommon to see regular purchases of £500 at one time
  26.      
  27.      - HMV top 20 last week featured 8 CD-ROM titles (which is obviously a 
  28.      good sign aswell) & 8 playstation items ie either game or kit.
  29.      
  30.      - average age of consumer = male 20 years of age which is a positive 
  31.      sign ie higher disposable income 
  32.      
  33.      - on *Friday Sony's main marketing campaign for the actual kit is 
  34.      being launched with every independent radio station carrying teaser 
  35.      ads in their drive time (morning) slots telling the consumer to watch 
  36.      out for the tv ads which will appear in the peak viewing time that 
  37.      night & the rest of the weekend ie Coronation Street, News @ Ten, 
  38.      Baywatch & Lethal Weapon 3 etc - 
  39.      
  40.      - already (maybe rather premature!) some sources are saying that the 
  41.      Saturn will become a specialist/niche 'games purest' machine very much 
  42.      like the 3DO.
