  5. What's New with The Developer Connection for OS/2?
  6. --------------------------------------------------
  7. IBM Personal Software Products is pleased to provide you with the 
  8. latest release of The Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 7. This 
  9. volume includes The Developer Connection for OS/2 CDs and The 
  10. Developer Connection News, along with Volume 3 of The Developer 
  11. Connection for LAN Systems CD.

  13. If you are interested in device driver development, you can now 
  14. upgrade your subscription to receive the IBM Developer Connection 
  15. Device Driver Kit for OS/2 (Developer Connection DDK).  The Developer 
  16. Connection DDK provides developers with the tools to develop device 
  17. drivers for personal computer hardware using the 32-bit OS/2 operating 
  18. platform.  Subscribers receive complete device driver source code and 
  19. samples, test aids, and updated documentation.  For more information, 
  20. call the appropriate order number for your geographic location.

  22. Volume 7 of The Developer Connection for OS/2 CDs
  23. --------------------------------------------------
  24. Volume 7 provides you with a complimentary license to Software 
  25. Installer for OS/2 Version 1.2.4.  Using Software Installer, you can 
  26. create a graphical interface that provides your users with an easy and 
  27. consistent way to install, update, restore, and delete the workstation 
  28. software that you develop for the OS/2 environment.  Other new 
  29. products include:  Hyperwise Version 2.0, OpenDoc Framework for C 
  30. Set++, OS/2 C-Kermit, OS/2 Warp Version 3, OnCmd xBase for OS/2, 
  31. Personal Communications AS/400 and 3270 V4.0 for OS/2, Toronto Virtual 
  32. File System, and Validator for OS/2.  In addition to the products in 
  33. the catalog, a wide variety of documentation is provided in several 
  34. formats.  For a list of the document titles available, refer to the 
  35. file BOOKLIST.ASC in the root directory of the CD.  Or, view the list 
  36. using the icon provided in The Developer Connection for OS/2 folder.

  38. Thank you for all your survey feedback.  We have tried to implement 
  39. some of your ideas; for example, many of you have asked for more 
  40. information regarding object-oriented programming development.  Volume 
  41. 7 contains a book excerpt, "Design Patterns," in HTML format (located 
  42. in the \HTML directory of Disc 2).  The book describes the symptoms of 
  43. problems C++ programmers may encounter and provides templates for 
  44. solutions.  We have placed a summary of the survey responses and our 
  45. actions in a file called SURV1Q95.RSP so you can get an idea what 
  46. others are suggesting and how we are responding.  We'd like to make 
  47. this feedback a more regular feature and hope you will continue to 
  48. participate.  Tell us what you think.  Complete the survey using the 
  49. icon in The Developer Connection for OS/2 folder or edit SURV2Q95.TXT 
  50. in the \DEVCON directory.  Instructions for returning the survey are 
  51. in the file.  With your help, we can continue to meet your OS/2 
  52. development needs.

  54. Volume 3 of The Developer Connection for LAN Systems CD
  55. -------------------------------------------------------
  56. The LAN Systems family of products provides APIs for a wide range of 
  57. operating system environments that span the entire range of functions 
  58. required for robust, client/server programming support.  Hundreds of 
  59. APIs are available for application development, but a given 
  60. application may need only a few.  To make it easier to determine the 
  61. APIs that benefit you and your application, the CD provides 
  62. documentation and sample code for each API.  The LAN Systems API 
  63. Roadmap outlines IBM's vision for a client/server application 
  64. development environment based on an integrated distributed computing 
  65. platform.  As this document evolves with each release of The Developer 
  66. Connection, further details of the application interface strategy for 
  67. each functional category will be provided to assist you with reusing 
  68. code.  This includes information on the industry standard APIs 
  69. provided for application portability across hardware platforms, as 
  70. well as object frameworks.

  72. The Developer Connection News
  73. -----------------------------
  74. An equally valuable component of The Developer Connection for OS/2 
  75. program is the technical newsletter that accompanies the CDs.  
  76. Articles from past issues can be found on each disc using the 
  77. Developer Connection Browser.  Comments and suggestions regarding The 
  78. Developer Connection for OS/2 can be sent to the Editor of the 
  79. newsletter.  For details, see page 24 of the newsletter.

  81. The Developer Connection for OS/2 Program Information
  82. -----------------------------------------------------
  83. The intended audience for The Developer Connection for OS/2 is the 
  84. professional developer.  We assume that you have a CD-ROM drive 
  85. attached to your system with the necessary device drivers that work 
  86. under OS/2 2.0 or higher to support it and, optionally, AIX 4.1 or 
  87. higher.  You can use the LAN Systems CD for development under OS/2 and 
  88. AIX.  If you do not have OS/2 support for your CD-ROM drive, please 
  89. see the DOS information in The Developer Connection for OS/2 User's 
  90. Guide contained in this package.

  92. Much of the content of The Developer Connection for OS/2 and LAN 
  93. Systems CDs is considered pre-release.  The pre-release code on 
  94. these CDs may be modified substantially before general availability.  
  95. IBM does not guarantee that any of the pre-release programs contained 
  96. on any of The Developer Connection for OS/2 and LAN Systems CDs will 
  97. ever be made generally available.  
  98.  
  99. Please read the enclosed License Agreements carefully and fully before 
  100. using any of the programs on the CDs, as the licenses vary for 
  101. individual products.  Most of the software is licensed for 120 days or 
  102. until you receive the next volume, whichever comes first.  However, the 
  103. licenses for the following toolkits do not expire as long as you adhere 
  104. to the terms and conditions of the license agreement:  Multimedia 
  105. Presentation Manager Toolkit/2, Pen for OS/2 Developer's Toolkit 1.0, 
  106. Software Installer for OS/2 Version 1.2.4, the Developer's Toolkit for 
  107. OS/2 2.1, the Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 3, the 
  108. LAN Systems Toolkit, the AIX DCE Toolkit, and the Encina Toolkit.  
  109.  
  110. The licenses for the following products have not been renewed for this 
  111. volume, so remove these products prior to installing Volume 7:

  121. READ the README on the CDs for IMPORTANT Developer Connection 
  122. information and last-minute updates (especially for the OS/2 Warp 
  123. Version 3 with WIN-OS/2 uninstall information).  For specific product 
  124. information, read the description files and individual product 
  125. READMEs.  The Developer Connection for OS/2 CDs contain a collection 
  126. of pre-release programs.  While we have tried to make sure they will 
  127. all install properly, we acknowledge that some problems might be 
  128. inherent in individual programs.

  132. Electronic support is provided through CompuServe, OS/2 BBS, and 
  133. the Internet.  You can get technical support or use the forum to 
  134. exchange messages, ideas, comments, or concerns.  The dedicated
