  8. In a contest of generally fast machines, price can be the 
  9. great differentiator. That's what sets the Tiger Desk486
  10. apart from every other system here: At just $2042, it's the
  11. least expensive system by $200.

  13. A low price won't do you much good without a high system
  14. performance, which the Tiger delivers: It's just 20 to 30
  15. percent slower than the fastest system here. It turned in 
  16. particularly good times on the Freelance test and consistently
  17. good times on all sections of the BAPCo suite, with the 
  18. exception of the graphics test. This weakness may be due to
  19. the no-name graphics accelerator card.

  21. The anonymous video card is one example of the Tiger's main
  22. weakness, which is a generic, one size-fits-all approach to
  23. design. The exterior styling is nice enough - a clean front
  24. panel with no unnecessary controls, a good keyboard, and an 
  25. easy-off case. Inside however, cables come off the 
  26. combination I/O-controller, board and obstruct two of the 
  27. expansion slots. On the upside, the system comes with a 
  28. decent 202MB Maxtor hard drive and a generous eight ISA 
  29. slots.

  31. The Tiger also lost a few points on customer service; the
  32. company ranked second to last in a strong field. While BOF's
  33. tech support department answered our calls accurately and 
  34. quickly, the company provides neither on-site service nor a 
  35. toll-free tech support line. Company representatives say 
  36. they encourage, but don't require, dealers to provide 
  37. on-site service, so the quality of service depends on your 
  38. local dealer.

  40. At this price, many will put up with a few design flaws and 
  41. will haggle over service with their dealer. This is a 
  42. solid, reasonably speed system at a rock-bottom price-a 
  43. combination you may find irresistible.
