ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Using Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Help is always available. You can obtain help at any time by pressing the F1
key.

When you request help, a help window is displayed. The kind of help displayed
is determined by what you selected before you requested help or the task you
were doing when you requested help. This is referred to as contextual help.

Within some help windows, certain words or phrases are highlighted. To obtain
additional information about a word or phrase, double-click on the word or
phrase. (Or press the Tab key until the cursor is on the word or phrase and
then press Enter.)

A Help choice appears on the menu bar of every window. The associated pull-down
menu provides these choices:

o Help index
o General help
o Keys help

A Help push button appears in windows. The kind of help invoked by a push
button is contextual help. Press F2 when contextual help is visible to get
extended help for the whole window.

USING GENERAL HELP

General help provides general information about the task to be achieved by a
specific window.

In windows that have a menu bar, select General help from the Help pull-down
menu.

In windows that have push buttons, press F1 or select the Help push button.
Then press F2 or select General help from the Help pull-down menu.

USING KEYS HELP

Keys help displays a list of key assignments for the application you are using.

Select Keys help from the Help pull-down menu. You also can press F9 from
within a Help window.

USING THE HELP INDEX

Help index provides a list of help topics.

Select Help index from the Helppull-down menu. You also can press F11 from
within a Help window.

To search the list of topics, do the following:

 1. Select Search from the Services pull-down menu.

 2. Type the word or phrase to be found into the Search for field.

 3. Select the Index radio button.

 4. Select Search.

Select this menu choice to display the help index.

The help index lists the titles of available help information.

You can use the index in two ways:

o Select a topic from the list of index entries.
o Select Search from the Services pull-down menu, and type a keyword to find.

Select this menu choice to display general help for the window.

These choices are used primarily to move and size windows. Depending on the
window you are in, you also can close windows and switch to another window.

Restore   Restores a minimized or maximized window to its previous size.

Move      Enables you to move a window around on the screen.

Size      Enables you to size the window.

Minimize  Makes a window as small as possible.

Maximize  Makes a window as large as possible.

Hide      Removes a window from the screen and places the object title in the
          Window List.

Close     Closes the window and returns to the previous window.

Window list Displays the Window List.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2.1. Help for Restore ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to return a minimized or a maximized window to its
previous size.

Another way to restore a minimized window is to double-click on its icon.

You also can restore a maximized window by clicking on the large box in the
top-right corner of the window.

Select this menu choice to move a window.

If you are using the mouse:

 1. Select the Move choice on the system menu. The borders of the window change
    color.

 2. Move the mouse pointer until the window border is where you want it.

 3. Click the mouse button again.

Or

 1. Click on the title bar of the window. The borders of the window change
    color.

 2. Hold the mouse button down and drag the window to its new position.

 3. Release the mouse button.

To move a window using the keyboard:

 1. Select the Move choice on the system menu. The window borders change color.

 2. Press the arrow key that points in the direction you want to move the
    window.

 3. When the window is where you want it, press Enter.

Select this menu choice to size a window.

To size a window using the mouse: The border of the window changes color.

 1. Move the mouse pointer until the border is in the new position.

 2. Click the mouse button again.

Or

 1. Position the mouse pointer on the border. The shape of the pointer changes.

 2. Press and hold the mouse button. The border changes color.

 3. While holding down the mouse button, drag the border to its new position.

 4. Release the mouse button.

To size a window using the keyboard:

 1. Select Size from the system menu and press Enter. The border of the window
    changes color.

 2. Press an arrow key to select the side of the window you want to move.

 3. Press an arrow key to move the side of the window in the direction of the
    arrow.

 4. When the border is in the new position, press Enter.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2.4. Help for Minimize ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to make a window as small as it can be, changing its
shape to an icon. The icon moves to the bottom of the screen unless you have
previously moved it. If you have moved the icon, it goes to its last position
on the screen.

You also can minimize a window by clicking on the small box in the top-right
corner of the window.

Select this menu choice to make a window as large as it can be.

You also can maximize a window by clicking on the upward-pointing arrow in the
top-right corner of the window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2.6. Help for Hide ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to remove a window from the screen and to place the
object title in the Window List.

You also can hide a window by selecting the hide button, which is to the right
of the window title.

Select this menu choice to close a window.

You also can close a window by either double-clicking on the title-bar icon, or
by selecting Close from the corresponding pop-up menu in the Window List.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2.8. Help for Window List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to display the OS/2* Window List.

From the Window List, you can:

o Switch to an open object.
o Close an open object.

Some objects, such as the Print object, cannot be closed from the Window List.
They can be closed only as part of the OS/2* operating system shutdown.

You also can display the Window List by pressing Ctrl+Esc or by positioning the
mouse pointer on the desktop (outside the border of all windows) and then
clicking mouse button 1 and mouse button 2 simultaneously.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.3. Help for the System Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

These choices are used primarily to move or close the windows that are not
sizeable and have push buttons.

Move      Enables you to move the window around on the screen.

Close     Exits the window and returns to its owner window. This menu choice is
          identical with pressing the Cancel push button.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Using the Help Facility ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Each help window includes the following menu-bar choices:

Services  Prints one or more help windows, searches through the help windows,
          or copies sections of the help windows to a file that you can edit.

Options   Expands or contracts the list of available help windows, or displays
          the list of help windows you have viewed during the session.

Help      Displays help on using the Help Facility.

If you want to see information on any of these choices, select the choice and
press F1. (If you are using a keyboard, press F10 to move to the menu bar.
Then, if necessary, press the Right Arrow key to highlight the menu-bar choice
for which you want help. Finally, press F1.)

If you select Contents from the Options pull-down menu, the Contents window
appears. This window lists all available help topics. A plus sign (+) next to a
topic indicates that additional entries are available for that topic. Click on
the plus sign to see the complete list. If you are using a keyboard, press the
Up or Down Arrow key to highlight the topic, and then press the + key.

If you want to view a topic, double-click on the topic (or press the Up or Down
Arrow key to highlight the topic and then press the Enter key).

After you select a topic, the information for that topic appears in a window.
The topic title appears at the top of the window to remind you of the topic you
are viewing. Highlighted words or phrases indicate that additional information
is available for a topic. If you are using a mouse, double-click on the
highlighted word or phrase. If you are using a keyboard, press the Tab key to
move to the word or phrase and then press the Enter key. Additional information
can appear in a window or in a related help topic window.

To close a help window, press the Esc key. The previous help topic appears if
one is available. If not, the previous window appears.

To exit the Help Facility without viewing previous help topics, select Close
from the title-bar icon or press Alt+F4.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Help for Contextual Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Contextual help displays help that refers to the selected object or to the task
being performed. Contextual help displays help in the following situations:

o If the selection cursor is on a menu-bar choice or on a menu choice, the help
  will relate to that choice.

  To display help for a menu-bar choice or a menu choice, highlight the choice
  and then press F1.

o If the selection cursor is on a field in a window, the help will relate to
  that field.

  To display help for a field, select the field (or press the Tab key to move
  the cursor to the field) and then press F1. If the cursor is already on a
  field when the window is displayed, press F1 to obtain help on that field.

o If a single symbol is selected, the help will relate to that symbol.

  To display help for a symbol, click on the symbol with mouse button 1 and
  then press F1.

  The help provided refers to the symbol type rather than to the specific
  symbol.

Select a topic to display keys help:

The following are the help window keys:

Key        Function

F1         Displays help.

F2         Displays extended help (from within any help window).

F9         Displays keys help (from within any help window).

F11        Displays the help index (from within any help window).

Esc        Cancels help.

Shift+F10  Displays help for help.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2. System Keys ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The following are the system keys:

Key          Function

Alt+Esc      Switches to the next program, including full-screen programs.

Alt+Tab      Switches to the next program that runs in a window.

Ctrl+Esc     Switches to the Window List.

F10 or Alt   Moves to or from the menu bar.

Arrow keys   Moves among choices.

End          Moves to the last choice in a menu bar, pull-down menu, cascaded
             menu, or pop-up menu.

Esc          Closes a pull-down menu, cascaded menu, pop-up menu, or the system
             menu; or deselects a menu-bar choice.

Home         Moves to the first choice in a menu bar, pull-down menu, cascaded
             menu, or pop-up menu.

PgUp         Scrolls the contents of the window up one page.

PgDn         Scrolls the contents of the window down one page.

Alt          Moves to or from the menu bar.

Alt+F4       Closes the window.

Alt+F5       Restores the window.

Alt+F7       Enables you to move the window.

Alt+F8       Enables you to size the window.

Alt+F9       Minimizes the window.

Alt+F10      Maximizes the window.

Ctrl+PgDn    Scrolls the contents of the window left one page.

Ctrl+PgUp    Scrolls the contents of the window right one page.

Shift+Esc or Alt+spacebar Moves to or from the system menu.

Shift+Esc or Alt Moves to or from the system menu of a text window.

Underlined letter key (mnemonic) Moves among choices.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. Window Keys ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The following are the window keys:

Key        Function

Enter      Completes the window; used in windows only.

Esc        Cancels the window.

Spacebar   Sets a check box on or off or performs the task described on the
           selected push button; used in windows only.

Tab        Moves to the next entry field or check box; used in windows only.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. The Developer Connection Main View ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use this window to install, try, or get information about products. Products
are listed under categories. To select a product in a category:

 1. Expand the category by clicking on the plus (+) sign next to a category
    icon or by double-clicking on the category object.
 2. Select a product by clicking on the product object.

You can select more than one product by holding down mouse button 1 and drawing
a rectangle around the product objects. To select products that are not
adjoining, hold down the Ctrl key, click on the product objects, and then
release the Ctrl key.

After you select a product, you can do the following:

o View product information
o Try the product (if applicable)
o Install the product
o Remove the product object (if previously installed by The Developer
  Connection)

To select an action, click on Symbol from the menu bar or display the pop-up
menu of the product object by clicking mouse button 2 on the object.

Menu-Bar Summary

File      Allows you to select a printer, print the Main View window, or exit
          from the program.
Symbol    Collapses and expands the Main View categories and allows you to
          select an action to apply to a product.
Edit      Copies selected icons to the clipboard, selects all visible objects
          in the Main View window, or deselects all selected objects.
Options   Displays or hides the Overview window, or sets and resets text fonts.
View      Shows all products or only new or updated products, automatically
          scales when window is sized, or enables you to zoom the screen
          contents.
What's New? Displays the online document "What's New in Volume 3?", which
          contains a brief welcome, lists of new and updated products, ordering
          information, and a complete product list.
Help      Displays information on how to use help and how to get help for the
          window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Window Manipulation Operations ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

You can use the following window manipulation operations:

o Scroll a window by means of the scroll bars or the Overview window.

o Zoom the window contents by means of the Zoom in, Zoom out, Zoom to fit, or
  Zoom reset menu choices from the View menu-bar choice; or by means of the
  Overview window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.1. Scrolling ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the scroll bar at the right of the window to scroll the window vertically.
Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window to scroll the window
horizontally.

The following scrolling functions are supported:

o Incremental scrolling
o Page scrolling
o Direct positioning.

You can scroll the window until you reach a border of the diagram.

You also can scroll the main window by moving the viewing frame in the Overview
window in any direction.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.2. Zooming ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Initially, the zoom factor is set to 1, which displays the contents in its
actual size.

The zoom factor can be increased with the Zoom in choice, decreased with the
Zoom out choice, or reset to 1 with the Zoom reset choice from the View
pull-down menu.

The zoom factor also can be set with the Zoom to fit menu choice, so that all
selected symbols fit into the window.

You also can implicitly and continuously zoom the main window by directly
setting the viewing frame in the Overview window. The zoom factor is then set
so that the object specified by the viewing frame in the Overview window
exactly fits into the current drawing area of the main window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.3. Selecting Graphical Objects ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Several actions require one or more graphical objects to be selected before
they can be performed. As a visual cue, selected graphical objects are
highlighted.

The graphical objects that can be selected are the category and the product
objects.

To select a graphical object, use mouse button 1.

The following are the supported selection types:

o Single-choice selection
o Random-choice selection
o Drag selection.

Use Select all to select all objects in the window. Use Deselect to deselect
all selected objects in the window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.4. Single-Choice Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To select an object, move the mouse pointer to the object and press mouse
button 1. The selected graphical object is selected.

Any previously selected graphical objects are deselected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.5. Random-Choice Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To select or deselect a graphical object without changing the selection state
of other graphical objects, press the Ctrl key and then click on the object you
want to select or deselect. The selection state of the selected graphical
object is toggled.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.6. Drag Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To select all the objects that are within or overlap a rectangular section of
the diagram, follow these steps:

 1. Move the mouse pointer to the starting position of the rectangle.
 2. Press and hold mouse button 1.
 3. Drag the mouse pointer until the rectangle contains all the required
    objects. The rectangle is outlined with dashed lines.
 4. Release the mouse button.

When the Ctrl key is not held down at the same time, all other symbols are
deselected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu-bar choice to select a printer, print the contents of the Main
View window, or exit from the program.

Menu Summary

Printer setup Enables you to select a printer for printing the window contents.
Print     Sends the current window contents to the printer.
Exit      Terminates The Developer Connection Catalog.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3. Symbol ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu-bar choice to collapse or expand the Main View categories or
select an action to apply to a product.

Menu Summary

Collapse  Collapses a selected product category so the product objects are
          hidden from view.
Expand    Expands a selected product category so the product objects are
          visible and can be selected.
View product information Displays information about a selected product.
Try product Allows you to try a product, when possible.
Install product Installs a product from the CD-ROM to your hard disk.
Remove product Removes a product object previously installed by The Developer
          Connection.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4. Edit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu-bar choice to copy selected objects to the clipboard, select
all visible objects in the Main View window, or deselect selected objects.

Menu Summary

Copy      Copies the selected icons to the clipboard.
Select all Selects all visible objects in the window.
Deselect  Deselects all selected objects.

Select this menu-bar choice to display or hide the Overview window, or set and
reset text fonts.

Menu Summary

Overview  Displays or hides the Overview window.
Set font  Enables you to set the font of text fields.
Reset font Erases the font that was set and restores the original font.

Select this menu-bar choice to show all products, show only new or updated
products, automatically scale the image when the window is sized, or zoom the
screen contents.

Menu Summary

Show new products only Displays only the new products in the Catalog Main View
          window when you select a category.
Show updated products only Displays only the updated products in the Catalog
          Main View window when you select a category.
Show all products Displays all the products in the Catalog.
Autoscale when window sized Causes the image to be rescaled when you change the
          size of the window. As a result, after you change the size of the
          window, the same part of the image will be displayed as was displayed
          before you changed the size of the window.
Zoom in   Zooms in on the current image.
Zoom out  Zooms out on the current image.
Zoom to fit Zooms in or out on the current image, so that all selected symbols
          fit into the window.
Zoom reset Resets the zoom factor to the default value.

Select this menu choice to open the Set Up Printer window, in which you select
a printer.

Select this menu choice to display the Overview window. You can use this window
to scroll and zoom the main window.

A check mark indicates the presence of the Overview window.

Select this choice again to close the Overview window. The check mark is then
removed.

Select this menu choice to display the Set Font window, where you can set the
font of text fields.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.9. Reset Font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to erase the font that was set and restore the original
font.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.10. Show new products only ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to cause only new products to be listed. If a category
contains no new products, the category will be hidden. A check mark indicates
that this selection is in effect.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.11. Show updated products only ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to cause only updated products to be displayed. If a
category contains no updated products, the category will be hidden. A check
mark indicates that this selection is in effect.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.12. Show all products ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to cause all products to be displayed (this choice is
automatically selected when the Catalog is opened). All categories will be
shown. A check mark indicates that this selection is in effect.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.13. Autoscale when window sized ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to cause future window-sizing actions to rescale the
image. As a result, after you change the size of the window, the same part of
the image will be displayed as was displayed before you changed the size of the
window.

A check mark indicates that window-sizing actions cause rescaling.

Select this choice again to disable automatic rescaling. The check mark is then
removed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.14. What's New? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to display the online document "What's New in Volume
3?", which contains a brief welcome, lists of new and updated products,
ordering information, and a complete product list.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.15. Zoom In ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to zoom in on the current image.

The zooming steps and the maximum zoom factor are design dependent.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.16. Zoom Out ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to zoom out on the current image.

The zooming steps and the minimum zoom factor are design dependent.

When the diagram border is reached, the window may also be scrolled to show as
little area outside the diagram as possible.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.17. Zoom to fit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this menu choice to zoom in or out on the current image and to position
it within the window so that all selected images fit into the window.

Select the number of copies to be printed by clicking mouse button 1 on the

Select this push button to print the current image according to the
specifications given.

This notebook displays information about the selected product. It is divided
into pages.

Select page 1 for information on support, configuration, and the status of the
release. Page 1 displays a message if the product is a pre-release, if it is

push button on page 1 for a description of the selected product.

Select page 2 for installation information. If the product was previously
installed by The Developer Connection, information about the previous
installation is displayed. If the product was not previously installed, "This
program has not been installed" is displayed.

Use this window to specify a program title for the product you want to install
and the folder where you want the product object to be added.

display of the diagram in the main window by manipulating the viewing frame in
the Overview window.

Use this window to scroll, or zoom in on or zoom out on the contents of the
main window.

Close the window by double-clicking mouse button 1 on the system menu icon, or
by selecting Overview in the main window, which removes the check mark.

Scroll the main window by moving the viewing frame to a different position.

You can do this in either of the following ways:

o Move the mouse pointer to any location inside the viewing frame, press and
  hold down mouse button 2, drag the viewing frame to a different position, and
  release the mouse button.

  The viewing frame stays at the new position.

  If you move any part of the viewing frame outside the diagram, the frame is
  automatically moved back onto the diagram.

o Click mouse button 2 in the client area of the Overview window, but outside
  the viewing frame.

  The viewing frame is centered on the mouse pointer.

  If you move the viewing frame outside the diagram, the frame is automatically
  moved back onto the diagram.

In both cases, the main window is immediately refreshed to show the contents of
the area defined by the viewing frame.

Alternatively, you can size the viewing frame in the following way:

 1. Press and hold down mouse button 2 on the border of the viewing frame. This
    gives you a size pointer.

 2. Resize the viewing frame by dragging the size pointer.

 3. Release mouse button 2.

The viewing frame stays at the new position. If the size of the viewing frame
would cause scaling beyond the limits, the size is set automatically to the
minimum or maximum size, as appropriate.

If any part of the new viewing frame is outside the diagram, it is
automatically adjusted so that it is fully contained in the diagram.

When you re-draw the viewing frame, the main window is immediately refreshed to
show the contents of the area defined by the viewing frame.

If you span the viewing frame, you cause the main window to zoom. You can

Select this menu choice to display only the used part of the diagram in the

When you select this menu choice, a check mark is placed beside it in the
pull-down menu. Select it again to display all of the diagram. The check mark
is removed.

Maximize  Makes the Overview window as large as possible.

Close     Ends the Overview window and returns you to the main window.

Use this window to control the refreshing of the Overview window when the
contents of the main window changes.

If Enable periodical refresh is not selected, the frequency of refreshes is
determined based on the kind of changes made to the diagram in the main window:

o When the main window is scrolled or zoomed
o When the size of the main window is changed.

If you select Enable periodical refresh, window refresh is triggered by the
system clock when the defined refresh interval has elapsed. Use the Minutes and
Seconds spin buttons to set the refresh interval.

In addition, regardless of what you choose, the Overview window is always
refreshed when you switch to it.

Select one of the following:

Define  Accepts the refresh-rate changes for the current diagram and closes the
        window.

Apply   Stores the new refresh-rate information in your user profile.

Cancel  Closes the window and restores the originally defined refresh-rate
        values.

Select this check box to activate automatic refreshing of the Overview window.

This is the time interval, in minutes and seconds, to be used for automatically
refreshing the Overview window. You can set an interval in the range from 0
seconds to 59 minutes 59 seconds. A value of 0 means that changes to the main
window are reflected in the Overview window immediately.

To change the interval, use either of these methods:

o Select the arrows and scroll through the time-interval values.

o Enter a time in the Minutes and Seconds fields.

When an invalid time-interval is entered, it is ignored and the previous value
is restored.

A dotted rectangle in the overview window, indicating which part of the diagram
is being displayed in the main window. It can be moved to scroll the diagram in
the main window or redrawn in a different size to zoom in or out on an area of
the diagram.

To progressively increase or decrease the size of a part of an image on a
screen or in a window.
