- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Setting Up from OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The setup program allows you to set up The Developer Connection for OS/2 to run
- either from your local hard disk or from the CD-ROMs. Using your hard disk to
- run The Developer Connection for OS/2 will improve performance.
-
- Note: If you are setting up from DOS, go to "Using The Developer Connection
- DOS Diskette Creation Utility".
-
- To begin setting up to run from either the hard disk or the CD-ROMs:
-
- 1. Insert Disc 1 or Disc 2 into a CD-ROM drive.
-
- 2. At an OS/2 command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive.
-
- 3. Type DEVCON and press Enter.
- The Developer Connection for OS/2 Setup screen appears. You are asked to
- select the components you want to copy to your hard disk. Components that
- were previously installed will be automatically selected.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Setting Up to Run from the CD-ROM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- From The Developer Connection for OS/2 Setup screen:
-
- 1. Do not select any components to copy to your hard disk. Deselect any
- components that are currently selected.
-
- 2. Select OK.
- A message that setup has been completed is displayed.
-
- 3. Select OK.
- A folder called The Developer Connection is placed on your desktop. You
- can open the folder by double-clicking on the folder object.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. Setting Up to Run from the Hard Disk ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- From The Developer Connection for OS/2 Setup screen:
-
- 1. Select the components you want to copy to your hard disk.
-
- 2. Select OK.
- A Setup Program panel allows you to designate the directory where you want
- to store the components.
-
- 3. Accept the default directory or type a different directory in the Directory
- field.
-
- 4. Select OK.
- A message that setup has been completed is displayed.
-
- 5. Select OK.
- The CD-ROM components that you selected to run from your hard disk are now
- copied to the hard disk. A folder called The Developer Connection is
- placed on your desktop. You can open the folder by double-clicking on the
- folder object.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Using The Developer Connection Catalog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The Developer Connection Catalog contains the products that you can install.
- You can view information about the products and can try some of the products
- before you install them.
-
- Note: If you have two CD-ROM drives, you can insert both CD-ROM discs for
- operating convenience.
-
- To use the Catalog:
-
- 1. Double-click on The Developer Connection on the desktop to open the folder.
-
- 2. Double-click on The Developer Connection Catalog in The Developer
- Connection folder to open the Catalog. The Main View window of the Catalog
- appears and displays product categories.
-
- If you want to display new or updated products only, select Show new
- products only or Show updated products only from the View menu on the menu
- bar.
-
- Note: When the Catalog is opened the first time, a document called "What's
- New in Volume 3?" appears. It lists the new and updated products
- for this volume. You can view this document at any other time by
- selecting "What's New?" from the menu bar of the Catalog.
-
- 3. Expand the categories you want by clicking on the plus (+) sign next to the
- category icon or by double-clicking on the category icon.
-
- 4. Select a product by clicking on the product object.
-
- 5. Select Symbol from the menu bar, or display the pop-up menu of the object
- by clicking mouse button 2 on the product object.
-
- 6. Select an appropriate action.
-
- There are four actions that you can select:
-
- View product
- information Provides brief descriptions of the products.
-
- Try product Allows you to try some products from the CD-ROMs
- without installing them. (Not all products can be
- tried.)
-
- Install product Installs products.
-
- Remove product Removes product objects previously installed by The
- Developer Connection for OS/2.
-
- Note: If the product you selected cannot be found on any CD-ROM disc in a
- CD-ROM drive, you will be prompted to insert the appropriate CD-ROM disc
- and type the path to that disc.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Installing a Product ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Because there are different kinds of products in The Developer Connection for
- OS/2, installation procedures vary.
-
- There are four types of product installations:
-
- o Products which are installed directly to the hard disk and have an object
- created, such as PMGB32.
- o Products which are installed directly to the hard disk but do not have an
- object created, such as Bitmap samples.
- o Products which cannot be installed directly but require the creation of
- diskettes, such as WITT.
- o Products which are installed according to an installation program included
- with the product, such as the MMPM/2 Toolkit.

- Installing products that are copied to the hard disk and have an object created
-
- The Add Program to Folder pop-up window appears.
-
- 1. Accept the default program title or type a different title.
-
- 2. Accept the default folder or select a different folder.
-
- 3. Select Add.
- An installation screen appears, requesting a destination drive and
- directory.
-
- 4. Accept the default destination or type a different destination. The files
- will be copied to the destination, and a pop-up window will appear stating
- that the product was successfully added.
-
- 5. Select OK.
- You will be returned to the Main View window.
-
- Installing products that are copied to the hard disk but do not have a folder
- created
-
- A default destination screen appears.
-
- 1. Accept the default destination or type a different destination. The files
- will be copied to the destination, and a pop-up window will appear stating
- that the product was successfully added.
-
- 2. Select OK.
- You will be returned to the Main View window.
-
- Installing products that cannot be installed directly but require the creation
- of diskettes
-
- A Diskette Image Creation Utility window appears with the file names and
- descriptions of the diskettes for the product.
-
- To create the diskettes, complete the following:
-
- 1. Type A to make all the diskettes, or type the number of a selected
- diskette. Press Enter.
-
- 2. Type the drive letter of the destination diskette drive. Press Enter.
-
- 3. Type Y to accept the drive. Press Enter.
-
- 4. Insert a blank, formatted, high-density diskette into the diskette drive.
- Press Enter.
-
- 5. After the diskettes have been created, press any key.
-
- o If you chose not to make all the diskettes, you will be returned to the
- Diskette Image Creation Utility window.
- o If you chose to make all the diskettes, you will be returned to the Main
- View window.
-
- 6. Type Q to quit if you are in the Diskette Image Creation Utility window.
- You will be returned to the Main View window.

- Installing products that are installed according to a program included with the
- product

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Using The Developer Connection Browser ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The Developer Connection Browser is a search tool that allows you to view
- online documents or search documents to locate information. The Browser can
- search on a single keyword or on a boolean expression. To use the Browser:
-
- 1. Double-click on The Developer Connection on the desktop to open the folder.
-
- 2. Double-click on The Developer Connection Browser in The Developer
- Connection folder to open the Browser folder. Category folders, which
- contain online documentation, are displayed.
-
- 3. Open a category folder to display the document objects in that category.
-
- Note: Browser objects are Workplace Shell objects and can, for example, be
- moved into other folders or dragged and dropped onto the desktop.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Viewing and Searching Online Documents ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To view a document, double-click on the document object.
-
- You can search documents for keywords by selecting Search from the system menu
- or from the pop-up menu of objects. The Browser will search through the
- selected objects and any subfolders of a folder object.
-
- You search for keywords by typing a search expression. By using the operators
- and, or, xor, and andnot between keywords, you can search for more than one
- keyword or restrict the keyword search. You also can control the order of
- precedence by using parentheses. (If you make a syntax error, the error is
- displayed in red.)
-
- Each keyword and operator has a pop-up menu with choices, such as changing the
- color or the operator of a selected item. You can display the pop-up menu by
- selecting the keyword or operator and then clicking mouse button 2.
-
- To search for keywords:
-
- 1. Select the folders or document objects you want to search. (You may select
- more than one.)
-
- 2. Select Search from the system menu or from the pop-up menu of objects. The
- Developer Connection Browser-Query... window appears.
-
- 3. Type a search expression in the Search Expression field.
-
- 4. Select the Search push button.
- A selection list of sections containing the keywords is displayed.
-
- 5. Double-click on a section from the selection list.
- The section you selected is displayed. The keywords you searched for are
- in this section.
-
- After you have completed your search, you can return to the Query window by
- double-clicking mouse button 1 on the title-bar icon of the document window.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Using The Developer Connection DOS Diskette Creation Utility ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The Developer Connection DOS Diskette Creation Utility enables a DOS user to
- create program diskettes that can be used to install selected OS/2 products.
-
- Notes:
-
- 1. A minimum of 500KB of free memory is required.
- 2. You must use high-density diskettes.
-
- To create installation diskettes, complete the following steps:
-
- 1. Insert a CD-ROM disc into a CD-ROM drive.
-
- 2. At a DOS command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive.
-
- 3. Type DEVCON and press Enter.
- The Developer Connection DOS Diskette Creation Utility screen appears and
- displays product categories.
-
- Selecting Products
-
- 1. Expand the categories you want by clicking mouse button 1 on the product
- category.
-
- 2. Select the products for which you want to create diskettes.
- A plus (+) sign appears, indicating that the products are selected.
-
- Designating the Target Drive
-
- 1. Select Target drive from the File menu or press F2.
- Accept the default drive (drive A), or type a different drive letter.
-
- 2. Select OK.
- You will be returned to The Developer Connection DOS Diskette Creation
- Utility screen.

- Creating the Product Diskettes
-
- 1. Select Make diskettes from the File menu or press F4.
- The Select Diskettes screen appears. All the diskettes for the product you
- selected are displayed. The default is to make all the diskettes for the
- product, but you may select only the diskettes you need.

- 2. Select the diskettes you want to create.
-
- 3. Select Create Diskettes.
- After the diskettes have been created, you will be returned to the Select
- Diskettes screen.
-
- 4. Select Cancel to return to the Diskette Creation Utility screen.
-
- 5. Exit the program by selecting Exit from the File menu or pressing F3.
-
