-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Implicit Editing Operations ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You can use the following implicit editing operations:
-
- o Scroll a diagram by means of the scroll bars or the Overview window.
-
- o Zoom a diagram by means of the Zoom in, Zoom out, Zoom to fit, or Zoom reset
- menu choices from the View menu-bar choice; or by means of the Overview
- window.

- Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window to scroll the window
- horizontally.
-
- The following scrolling functions are supported:
-
- o Incremental scrolling
- o Page scrolling
- o Direct positioning.
-
- You can scroll the window until you reach a border of the paper.
-
- You can also scroll the main window by moving the viewing frame in the Overview
- window in any direction.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.2. Zooming ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Initially, the diagram's zoom factor is set to 1, which displays the diagram in
- its actual size.
-
- The zoom factor can be increased with the Zoom in choice, decreased with the
- Zoom out choice, or reset to 1 with the Zoom reset choice from the View
- pull-down menu.
-
- The zoom factor can also be set with the Zoom to fit menu choice, so that all
- selected symbols fit into the window.
-
- You can also implicitly and continuously zoom the main window by directly
- setting the viewing frame in the Overview window. The zoom factor is then set
- so that the diagram's part, specified by the viewing frame in the Overview
- window, exactly fits into the current drawing area of the main window.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.3. Detecting Graphical Objects ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The following manipulations require the detection of graphical objects, based
- on a single point or an area specified with the mouse pointer:
-
- o Select
- o Move
- o Size
- o Attach of a link to another symbol
- o Add a bend point to a link
-
- Except when drag selecting graphical objects, the detection is based on a
- single point, in which case a small rectangular area of uncertainty around the
- mouse pointer is checked for an overlap with a graphical object.
-
- Graphical objects are always checked in reverse drawing order: top (front)
- first, bottom (back) last. Only non-outlined symbols (symbols being neither
- moved nor sized) are checked. The first graphical object found to overlap with
- the rectangular area by as little as one pixel is the detected one.
-
- Warning: If you click where two or more graphical objects are close together or
- overlap, you might not detect the object you want. If this happens, separate
- the objects and try again.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.4. Selecting Graphical Objects ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Several actions require one or more graphical objects to be selected before
- they can be performed. As a visual cue, selected graphical objects are
- displayed in selection color. In addition, size handles, when displayed, are
- shown as filled black boxes (as opposed to outlined boxes).
-
- The graphical objects that can be selected are symbols, symbol parts, and bend
- points. Before a bend point can be selected, it must be made visible by
- selecting the graphical object of which it is part.
-
- To select a graphical object, use mouse button 1.
-
- When you select a symbol part, either that symbol part alone or the whole
- symbol is selected depending on how the symbol part is defined. (Thus, when a
- bend point is selected, the link to which it belongs is deselected.)
-
- These are the supported selection types:
-
- o Single-choice selection
- o Random-choice selection
- o Drag selection.
-
- Use Select all to select all symbols in the diagram. Use Deselect to deselect
- all symbols, symbol parts, and bend points in the diagram.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.5. Single-Choice Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To select a symbol, a symbol part, or a bend point, move the mouse pointer to
- it and press mouse button 1. The detected graphical object is selected.
-
- Any previously selected graphical objects are deselected.
-
- Warning: If you click where two or more graphical objects are close together or
- overlap, you might not detect the object you want. If this happens, separate
- the objects and try again.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.6. Random-Choice Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To select or deselect a graphical object without changing the selection state
- of other graphical objects, press the Ctrl key, then click on the symbol,
- symbol part, or bend point you wish to select or deselect. The selection state
- of the detected graphical object is toggled.
-
- Warning: If you click where two or more graphical objects are close together or
- overlap, you might not detect the object you want. If this happens, separate
- the objects and try again.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.7. Drag Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To select all the symbols that are within or overlap a rectangular section of
- the paper follow these steps:
-
- 1. Move the mouse pointer to the starting position of the rectangle.
- 2. Press and hold down mouse button 1.
- 3. Drag the mouse pointer until the rectangle contains all the required
- symbols. The rectangle is outlined with dashed lines.
- 4. Release the mouse button.
-
- When the Ctrl key is not held down at the same time, all other symbols are
- deselected.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.8. Moving Graphical Objects ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To move a symbol, link symbol part, or bend point, follow these steps:
-
- 1. Place the mouse pointer on the graphical object to be moved.
- 2. Press and hold down mouse button 2.
- 3. Drag the detected graphical object to the required position. While you drag
- a symbol or symbol part, its drag shape is displayed. While you drag a bend
- point, a polyline is displayed to indicate the approximate form of the link
- being modified.
- 4. Release mouse button 2.
-
- Move does not change the selection state of any graphical object. But when
- other graphical objects are selected, they are moved simultaneously.
-
- When the source and the target symbol of a link are moved simultaneously, the
- link and all of its bend points are also moved.
-
- Use Cut and Paste to move one or more graphical objects to a different window.
-
- Warning: If you click where two or more graphical objects are close together or
- overlap, you might not detect the object you want. If this happens, separate
- the objects and try again.
-
- In particular, if the detected graphical object cannot currently be moved, the
- other graphical object will not be detected by the mouse pointer at this
- position.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.9. Sizing a Node ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To size a node, follow these steps:
-
- 1. Select Show size handles to display size handles for all nodes.
-
- Eight size handles are displayed for each node. Use the corner size handles
- to size the node without distorting the current image. Use the middle size
- handles to size the node in one of the two directions determined by the
- size handles.
-
- 2. Move the mouse pointer to one of the size handles.
-
- 3. Press and hold down mouse button 2.
-
- 4. While holding the mouse button down, drag the detected size handle to the
- required position.
-
- While you drag the size handle, the node's drag shape is displayed.
-
- 5. Release mouse button 2.
-
- Size does not change the selection state of any graphical object. But when
- other graphical objects are selected, they are sized simultaneously.
-
- All links attached to a sized node are automatically adjusted.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1.10. Adding a Bend Point ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To add a bend point to a link, follow these steps:
-
- 1. Display the bend points by selecting the link, or select Show all bend
- points.
-
- 2. Click mouse button 2 on the link body where you want to add the bend point.
- Do not click on an existing bend point. Also make sure that no other
- graphical object gets detected.
-
- The bend point is created when you press the mouse button. You can drag the
- bend point to a different position before releasing the mouse button. The
- bend point is added at the position where you release the mouse button.
-
- The add bend point action does not change the selection state of any graphical
- object.
-

-
- o function symbol
-
- o interaction symbol
-
- o data store symbol
-
- o flow symbol, which can be
-
- - a data flow symbol or
-
- - a control flow symbol.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.2. Help for Function Symbol ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This symbol represents a function, that is, some process that transforms input
- data to output data. A function may be refined, that is, its operation may be
- documented by a lower level data flow diagram. To refine a function,
-
- o double-click on the function symbol,
- o draw the underlying data flow diagram, and
- o store the diagram on disk.
-
- A function that has been refined is marked by a text field that tags the

- This symbol represents a data store, that is, a file or a data base where data
- is stored or from which data is retrieved.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.5. Help for Flow Symbol ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This link indicates a control flow or a data flow. The two different types of
- flow are implemented in this example as two forms of one symbol:
-
- o A dotted polyline indicates a control flow.
-
- o A spline indicates a data flow.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.6. Help for Control Flow Symbol ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- A link that indicates the flow of control.
-
- The start bend point indicates where control comes from:
-
- o either a node
-
- o or, if the link is connected to paper, control enters from the context.
-
- Similarly, the end bend point indicates where control goes to:
-
- o either a node control is given to
-
- o or, if the link is connected to paper, control is given back to the context.
-
- Associate a name with the control flow by double-clicking on the text field of
- the link symbol.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.7. Help for Data Flow Symbol ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- A link that indicates the flow of data.
-
- The start bend point indicates the source of the data:
-
- o either a node from which the data comes
-
- o or, if the link is connected to paper, the data is coming from the context.
-
- Similarly, the end bend point indicates the destination of the data
-
- o either a node to which the data is delivered
-
- o or, if the link is connected to paper, the data is delivered to the context.
-
- Associate a name with the data flow by double-clicking on the text field of the
- data flow.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.8. While Adding a Node ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You can choose among the following:
-
- o Search for a suitable node position by moving the mouse pointer in the main
- window's client area. The drag shape of the node is displayed. The node is
- placed so that its origin is at the mouse pointer's position.
-
- If you cannot see the position at which you want to add the node, scroll the
- main window. The current mode remains active until you release mouse button 2
- or click mouse button 2 in the client area.
-
- o Add the node by releasing mouse button 2 (or click mouse button 2 when it has
- not been pressed yet).
-
- o Cancel the add-node operation by pressing the Esc key.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.9. About to Add the First Bend Point ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- It may be necessary to attach a source bend point to another symbol. In this
- case, move the mouse pointer to the source symbol to which the link is to be
- attached and click mouse button 2 on it. Sometimes it may be ambiguous which
- symbol is detected. The link is attached with its source bend point to the
- point on the source symbol's attachment shape that lies closest to the mouse
- pointer.
-
- If you cannot see the position at which you want to add the bend point,
- scroll the main window. The current mode remains active until you
- double-click mouse button 2 in the client area.
-
- o Cancel the add-link operation by pressing the Esc key.
-
- Once you have placed the first bend point, follow these steps to complete the
- definition of the link:
-
- 1. Add intermediate bend points to the link by moving the mouse pointer to the
- required positions and clicking mouse button 2.
-
- 2. End the definition of the link by moving the mouse pointer to where you
- would like the last (target) bend point and double-clicking mouse button 2.
- Similar to the source bend point, it may be necessary to attach the target
- bend point to another symbol.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7.10. About to Add Another Bend Point ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
