- Use the Open window to select and start the story you want to run.
-
- You can select a story in one of two ways:
-
- 1. Using the mouse:
-
- o Locate and click on the drive of your choice.
-
- o Double-click on the directory of your choice.
-
- o Double-click on the story file name in the File list box to start the
- story.
-
- 2. Using the keyboard:
-
- o Type the path and file name in the Open filename entry field, then press
- Enter.
-
- After you select and start a story, the Open window will disappear, the Play
- window opens and the story begins running.
-
- The fields used to select a story include:
-
- Drive
- Directory
- Open Filename
- File
-

- Use this field to enter the name of the story you want to run. You can type
- upper or lower case.
-
- If the story file is on the drive and directory currently selected in the Drive
- and Directory list boxes, enter only the 1- to 8-character name of the story. A
- file name extension is optional; if none is entered, the extension _ST is
- assumed. If the story file is located on a different drive and directory, enter
- the full path and file name in the entry field, as follows:
-
- DRIVE:\DIRECTORY\FILENAME
-
- If you don't know the complete name of the file you want to open, or you want
- to search for files with a certain extension, use a wild card character in this
- field.
-
- Example: when the selection window first opens, the extension _ST appears in
- the Open filename field. As a result, only files with the _ST extension appear
- in the File box. If you erase all characters from the Open filename field, all
- the files in the currently selected directory appear in the File box.

- Type of file is set by default to <All Files>. Unless characters in the Open
- filename field are acting as a filter, all files in the currently selected
- directory will appear in the File list box.

- Remember that if you enter an asterisk and a file extension in the Open
- filename field, only files with that extension are listed in the File box.
-
- Example: when the selection window first opens, the extension _ST appears in
- the Open filename field. As a result, only files with the _ST extension appear
- in the File box. If you erase all characters from the Open filename field, all
- the files in the currently selected directory appear in the File box.

- This list displays the drives you can access from your computer. The drive
- initially displayed in the box will either be the drive that TELLPM was started
- from, or the drive associated with TELLPM through program icon settings.

- Press the arrow at the right of the list to view the drives available.
- Double-click on a drive to select it and display its directories in the
- Directory list.

- This list displays the directories for the drive that is selected in the Drive
- list. The directory initially displayed in the box will either be the directory
- that TELLPM was started from, or the directory associated with TELLPM through
- program icon settings.

- To display all the directories for the selected drive:
-
- o Double-click on the drive letter at the top of the directory list
-
- When all the directories display, double-click on one directory to select it
- and display its files in the File list. Any other directories will disappear
- from the Directory list.
-
- To redisplay all the directories for the selected drive:
-
- o Double-click on the drive letter at the top of the list
-

- This list displays the files for the selected directory in the Directory list.
- The file name you select is automatically displayed in the Open filename entry
- field.

- Double-click on a file name to select it and run the story. If you single-click
- on a file name, click on OK run the story.

- Click on OK to run the story named in the Open filename field.

- Select Cancel to discontinue the action and close the selection window.

- The Play window appears when you select and start a story. Use the Play control
- panel to pause or end the running story, or to reset the Play window size.
-
- To display the Play control panel:
-
- 1. Make the Play window the active window.
-
- 2. Position the mouse pointer anywhere over the story window and click mouse
- button 2.
-
- Move, close, or resize the Play window like any other OS/2 window.
-
- Note: The Play window can be displayed with or without frame controls that
- allow you to move and resize the window. If the frame controls are not
- displayed, you cannot move, close, or size the Play window. Turn frame controls
- on or off with the Ultimedia-AVC Options menu choice Play window definition.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Play control ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- Use the Play control panel to control a story once it has started running.
-
- The Play control panel can be displayed or hidden at any time while a story is
- running. Move or close the control panel like any other OS/2 window.
-
- To redisplay the control panel:
-
- o Position the mouse pointer anywhere over the Play window and click mouse
- button 2.
-
- The control panel has the following buttons:
-
- Play Returns a story to continous play from Step mode.
-
- Pause Pauses the story, or resumes it if it is currently paused.
-
- Step mode Runs the story one statement at a time.
-
- Close Ends the story and closes the Play window.
-
- View variables Lets you view current values for all story variables
-
- Save state Saves the story to the current point with all information
- intact.
-
- Reset Resets the Play window to its initial size.
-
- Help Displays this help window.
-
- To select a control panel button:
-
- 1. Using the mouse:
-
- o Position the mouse pointer over the button and click mouse button 1.
-
- 2. Using the keyboard:
-
- o Use the cursor keys to move highlighting from one button to the next
- (highlighting is indicated by a thin black border around the button).
-
- o Press Enter to activate the button currently highlighted.
-
- To get help for any control panel button:
-
- 1. Using the mouse:
-
- o Position the mouse pointer over the button.
-
- o Press and hold mouse button 1, then press F1 to get help.
-
- 2. Using the keyboard:
-
- o Using the arrow keys, shift highlighting to the button you want help for.
-
- o Press F1 to get help.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Play ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- Use Play to resume playing a story from the pause state, or to exit Step mode
- and return to continuous play.
-
- The Play button features an animated arrow that scrolls continuously from left
- to right while the story is running. The arrow stops moving when the story is
- paused.
-
- To resume playing a paused story, do either of the following:
-
- o Click on Play, or
-
- o Click on Pause
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2. Step mode ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Select Step mode to advance the story one line at a time. Step mode can be
- started at the beginning of a story, while the story is running, or when the
- story is paused.
-
- Once Step mode is chosen, the AVA/2 Step mode information window is displayed.
- Two story lines appear in the window: the last story line executed is displayed
- first, the line to be executed next is shown beneath it.
-
- To advance the story one step (one story line):
-
- o With the Play window active, press any key or click mouse button 1.
-
- o With the Step mode window active, press any key.
-
- While in step mode, you can view the current values of all story variables.
-
- To display a window showing current values for all valuables:
-
- o Click on the View variables button
-
- To exit step mode:
-
- o Click on the Play button, or close the Step mode information window.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.3. Pause ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- Use Pause to pause a running story. The Play window remains open, but story
- action is temporarily frozen. Pause does not alter the story in any way or
- cause information to be lost.
-
- You can use the Save state or Reset size buttons while the story is paused, or
- move directly to Step mode.
-
- To resume running the story:
-
- o When the control panel is the active window:
-
- - Click on Pause again, or use cursor keys to move highlighting to Pause;
- then press Enter.
-
- o When the Play window is the active window:
-
- - Press any key, or position the mouse pointer over the window and click
- mouse button 1.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.4. Close ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- Use Close to stop a running story and close the Play window. The story will be
- saved.
-
- To view the story again:
-
- o repeat the initial Open procedure.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.5. View variables ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Use View variables to display current values for all variables used in the
- story. View variables can only be used in Step mode.
-
- When View variables is selected, the AVA/2 variable information window is
- displayed. Variable names appear on the left side of the window. The current
- value of each variable is listed on the right side of the window. As you step
- through the story, variable values are updated as they change.
-
- The AVA/2 variable information window can be closed or resized like any OS/2
- window.
-
- To close the AVA/2 variable information window, do either of the following:
-
- o Click on Play, or
-
- o Close the Step mode window.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.6. Save state ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Use the Save state button to set a point in the current story to restart the
- story from, rather than starting it from the beginning.
-
- Pressing Save state puts the story into Step mode and pauses the action. The
- last story action that occurred will be the starting point when you play the
- story from the saved state.
-
- After saving the story state, you can close the Play window and edit the story.
-
- To resume running a saved story:
-
- o Use the Ultimedia-AVC Tell menu choice Play from saved state. All information
- displayed on the screen at the save point is restored.
-
- Save state can be selected while the story is running or when it is paused.
-
- Note: The save point is only kept in memory as long as the current story
- resides in Ultimedia-AVC. Opening a new story or ending the current
- Ultimedia-AVC session will erase the save point.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.7. Reset ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If the Play window was resized at any time after the story began running, Reset
- size will restore the window to its initial size. The initial size is the size
- of the Play window when it first opens and the story begins to run.

- To change the initial size of the window:
-
- o Use the Ultimedia-AVC Options menu choice Play window style.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. AVA/2 Step mode information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Use the Step mode information window to view the last story line executed and
- the line to be executed next. The last line appears first, with the next line
- beneath it.
-
- Each story line contains all the AVA/2 instructions that control the story
- action. Scroll to the right or enlarge the window to view all the information
- contained on a story line.
-
- To advance a step (one story line):
-
- o With the Play window active, press any key or click mouse button 1.
-
- o With the Step mode window active, press any key.
-
- The first line will now contain the information that was previously in the
- second line. The second line will contain a new story line.
-
- While in step mode, you can view the current values of all story variables.
-
- To display a window showing current values for all valuables:
-
- o Click on the View variables button
-
- The Step mode information window can be moved, resized or closed like any OS/2
- window.
-
- To exit step mode:
-
- o Click on the Play button, or close the Step mode information window.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. AVA/2 Variable information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

- The AVA/2 Variable information window displays current values for all variables
- used in the current story. It is only available while the story is in Step mode
-
- Two types of variables are listed: global variables and local variables. Global
- variables are listed first, local variables listed underneath them.
-
- The name of each variable appears at the left of the window, with the current
- value listed to the right. The border between the variable names and variable
- values is moveable, allowing you to adjust how much of each side is visible.
-
- For quick access to a specific variable:
-
- o Press the character key matching the first letter of the variable name. For
- example, press 'J' to see variables that begin with 'J'.
-
- Each variable value is updated as it changes during the course of the story.
-
- The AVA/2 Variable information window can be moved, resized or closed like any
- OS/2 window.

- The buttons on the Play control panel have the following keyboard equivalents:

- global variable A SMPL variable whose value is available to all other stories.
- Its name starts with either the character @ or #, and otherwise follows the
- variable name rules.

- local variable A SMPL variable whose value is available only within the story
- where it is defined, as opposed to a global variable.
