Transcription: SGML has a rather interesting history. It was originally designed by an attorney who wanted to share information with other attorneys, both those in his law firm and those outside of his law firm. And what he found is that he couldn't do so very easily because of all the dependent formats of the various software applications that were in use. So what he did was he sat down and created the beginnings of SGML, a tag-based language where the tags literally describe the elements contained therein.
