-
- You should have a diskette with the 4738-PC1 product on the AS/400;
- same as worked under OS/2 1.3 EE. This installs per instructions
- under 2.0, assuming you have OS/400 2.1.0 or 2.1.1. You then can
- get a PTF number for your OS/400 system from IBM customer support 800-237-5511
- it's a different PTF depending on 2.1.0 or 2.1.1. Once that
- PTF is installed on AS/400, you probably will have to download to
- another older PC Support system a couple of shared folder files to
- update your PCSOS2 subdirectory on 2.0 to make the initial connection.
- Files I had to copy were EHNSFL0.DLL and EHNSFL3.EXE (System would
- stop during boot with error messages giving file names). When I
- put the new files from QIWSOS2 folder in my PC subdirectory, it started
- working fine. Hope this helps,

- You should be able to write a rather simple REXX exec that would use

- I don't know if this will help you, but I just recently got my
- HP ScanJet Plus scanner to run under OS/2 V2.0. I can now run
- SCALGAL5 from HP and Calera WordScan Plus software under OS/2.
-
- I'm using the SJDRIVER.SYS scanner driver supplied by HP and loading
- this driver at the time I start the applications. Both of the applications
- that I'm running normally run under Windows 3.0.
-
- It was necessary to make the following changes to make this
- work:
- 1. Using the IBM reference disk, we changed the Buffer
- Address from C0000-C3FFF to CC000-CFFFF. Also, the I/O
- Port Address from 0278-027F to 0268-026F.
-
- 2. AUTOEXEC.BAT was modified to include all the necessary
- libraries in the PATH statement:
- PATH = ...E:\SCANGAL5;E:\CALERA\BIN;
-
- 3. The OS/2 WIN.INI file: C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\WIN.INI was
- modified with the necessary information to run the two
-
- applications. This was done by cutting the information from
- the Windows 3.0 WIN.INI file and pasting it into the
- WIN.INI file used by OS/2.
-
- 4. Scangal5 and Calera WordScan Plus are started as full
- screen Windows applications under OS/2 with the
- following parameters specified:
- DOS_DEVICE = E:\SCANGAL5\SJDRIVER.SYS
- IDLE_SENSITIVITY = 100
- VIDEO_8514_XGA_IOTRAP = OFF
- VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION = ON
- I hope this helps you solve your problems with the HP Scanner.

- From the README --
-
- o LapLink III 3.0 (DOS)
-
- - We recommend using the parallel port. To use the serial port
- with this program, comment out the VCOM.SYS and COM.SYS
- statements from CONFIG.SYS (by putting "REM " at the beginning
- of the line) and restart the computer. To use the serial
- port for other purposes, uncomment the lines in CONFIG.SYS and
- restart the computer.
-
- Once is starts it has no IDEA what the file system underneath it is. Of
- course, if you are going from the OS/2 2.0 system that has HPFS installed
- and to a non-HPFS system, there should NOT BE ANY non standard 8.3 file
- names on the disk (in any case this should be true) or problems will
- arise.

- We used the reference disk, and just changed the Buffer address and
- IO port address to the settings you suggested - and it WORKED! It
- works elegantly in a seamless WPS desktop window. OS2 has put a
- scanner icon on the desktop. There was no need to add anything to
- to the config.sys file (I had a device = statement there), and the
- autoexec and win.ini were ok because of the initial installation of
- the scanner software. In fact, the system boots faster now (we assume
- because there was a memory conflict and a timeout!) So it seems that
- there is an OS2 driver for the HP ScanJet Plus - the driver that
- HP sends with the scanner. Funny - there tech people keep saying
- that the device won't work with OS2. Maybe IBM should let them
- know that it does - thanks again!

- Yes, it will transfer the files, but what will it do with the EA's?
- I don't think that any DOS based application will properly handle
- them in their native state. You need to run EAUTIL or equivalent
- against any file with EA's to split them into "regular" files before
- transferring them across, and then use EAUTIL or equivalent to
- rejoin the EA's. Of course long names from HPFS partitions are not
- to be supported by any DOS appl.

- IFS installs the HPFS installable files system, usually the first

- If you are using OS/2 Comm Manager then the CM Mouse Support product
- can emulate a lightpen with the mouse. You can define either mouse
- button to be the 'lightpen' button (and use the other button for some
- other host function). The only difference between this and a 'real'
- light pen is that with a real pen you can click the tip of the pen

- Ref: Append at 16:11:26 on 92/06/12 GMT (by AAAF156 at OS2CUST)
-
- The base operating system supports LPT ports through 9. However, your
- printer in Settings->Output Port will only display the first three. Unless
- you 1. alter your inisys.rc file adding the appropriate additional
- PM_SPOOLER_PORT lines. 2. regen your os2sys.ini file. There is also a
- "C" program example in one of the "red" books for changing the settings via
- APIs.
-
- If you are working on a network that is supports the "LAN aware shell' you
- don't even have to worry about printer ports in many cases. You take a
- "network printer" template and drop it on your desk, tell it the Network path
- to the printer and you can send print files to it w/o assigning a port.
- And you can assign a port by clicking with the secondary mouse button on the
- network printer icon and selecting "Assign port..."
-
- Or you can do it the old fashioned way at the command line "net use lpt7 ..."
- or 'capture ... l=7 ...".
-
- From my way of thinking, however, there should be a way of adding lpt ports
- to a printer's "settings" w/o regenerating an ini file or writing a "C"
- program.

- want, install it on every user's machine (as part of STARTUP.CMD
- possibly). Use your custom program for your user's to logon and
- logoff. Then, whenever the user logs on, start a thread that watches
- the keyboard queue periodically. If no activity, then the program
- could automatically log the user off.
-
- Could this be of use to you? If so, try the OS2LAN forum.

- MS C 6.0 will work. We have an application that exchanges data with
- a VM HPO host in a duplex fashion that uses the EHLLAPI of ES 1.0.
- I would hope that any C compiler would work, granted there might be
- some changes that need to be made to accomodate the language dialect.

- If you are using the EHLLAPI examples, please note the compiler

- I asked an EHLLAPI developer about this. His response follows:
-
- Craig,
-
- It does sound like he is planning to write to the DOS/WINOS2 environments.
- PC 3270 Emulation is an IBM DOS/WINOS2 (separate products but written for
- both) product. If this is the case, it shouldn't matter what compiler he
- uses. The concern would be if he is trying to write to the WINOS2
- environment, our EHLLAPI VDD is not currently working for that
- environment. Work is in progress (PMR 1X905) to add support for WINOS2,
- but probably won't be ready for some time.
-
- The EHLLAPI VDD does support DOS HLLAPI applications, but we generally
- recommend new development be performed for the OS/2 environment.
- (Unless he is doing something like communicating with other windows
- applications which is what it sounds like he wants to do.)

- The Search Service available depends on how you are getting to the
- BBS. The dial-in "direct" users have a Search Service on the first
- menu presented. This is an IBMLink search of APAR, TECHQA, FLASHES,
- and Bulletin libraries on IBMLink. PMR's are not accessible.
-
- If you are an IBMLink WSTC accessing by using the OS2BBS fastpath
- command, there is no special BBS Search Service. You would use the
- regular IBMLink Search Service available to you. Most corporate
- customers using this service do not have access to the PMR's either.

- We have Remotevision onsite and it is presently being evaluated. If
- you hope to run applications from your server over the asynch link
- don't set your hopes very high. RemoteVision copies all traffic from
- the Token Ring network and ships it across the async line. It acts as
- a bridge; the remote PC looks like another ring on the network. Even
- with the filters enabled, a lot of traffic will cross your asynch link.
- This is especially true if you have a lot of netbios or TCP traffic.
- If you plan to use you server as a file server ONLY then it works

- You could use a background process that waits for the relevant signal

- does not require PM and (as far as I am aware) does not need a user to

- We've seen a very few but *NONE* have drivers for OS/2 and don't anticipate
- writing such a thing. We were in contact with a vendor in Canada for a
- large keypad that would emulate the mouse movements by pressing large keys.
- However, he only had a prototype and just before we were set to order, IBM

- talked with says that with all the cutbacks, nobody's putting money into
- developing products for the disabled. The center in Atlanta will send you

- I have limited use of my hands and I have found the IBM L40SX
- Trackpoint to be very useful. It is made for the laptop, but will
- plug into any PS/2. It is literally a reversible mouse. On one
- side it is a regular 2-button mouse, on the other it is a 4-button
- trackball.
-
- I use the trackball side. Its best feature for me are the 4-buttons.
- The two larger buttons function just like regular mouse buttons and
- allow single or double clicking of "button 1" and "button 2". The
- two smaller buttons are for "dragging" operations. If you click one
- of these, it is equivalent to pushing and holding a mouse button.
- This allows you to spin the ball without having to hold the buttons down.
- You click the small button again to "release".
-
- I don't know what kind of dexterity the man has or what materials the
- hand and hook are made of, but something so be possible. If the hook
- is metal, I'd recommend gluing a piece of non-slip material to the top
- of each button (Dycem, for example) which would prevent the hook from
- sliding off the plastic. The ball might be more of a problem. It's
- also plastic and it's very smooth. If the hook itself has some form
- of non-skid "fingertip" it shouldn't be too hard to spin the ball. Or
- maybe the hand can do it.
-
- Finally, he might also need to use a "sticky key" type program to help
- with Shift-select, Shift-drag type operations. There's something
- called 1MOUSE on OS2TOOLS which is supposed to allow people to use
- a mouse with just one finger. It's IUO, but you could probably get
- legal permission for its use if he's not an IBMer.

- Frank,
- Yes, both DDE and named pipes are workable options. DDE is probably
- your best bet. Both the PM and the Windows programs can use DDE to talk
- to the other without knowing that they are running in different
- environments. So the PM program assumes that it is talking to another

- We have a gentleman that works in our department that does not have use
- of his arms or legs. He programs on our mainframe using a PC with a trackball.
- He controls the trackball and keyboard with what is called a "mouth stick".
- The mouth stick is basically a mouth guard with a shaft that has a pencil
- attached to the end, eraser-side down. The eraser makes contact with the
- trackball (Expert Systems). This works very well for him. For DOS machines
- he uses the IBM Independence Series software which causes the Control, Alt and
- Shift keys to be "sticky". For OS/2 2.0 systems we've modified the Mouse
- settings to never use both mouse buttons. We haven't really solved the
- problem of dragging objects because he can't hold a mouse button down while
- he controls the trackball. What we have done for him is modify the trackball
- switch by wiring a on-off pushbutton in parellel with mouse button one so he
- can drag objects. It's not ideal, but it works for him. The OS/2 sticky-key
- feature is enabled from the keyboard setup area.

- Sorry I took so long to answer this, but I just started downloading this

- The first, called 'osport.kex' will do most of the API name changes and

-
- The second macro, called 'shtolong' will convert SHORTs to LONGs along with

- I'm not IBM and I don't have an inside track, but I know the following:
- MMPM/2, when announced, said that it would support MM Windows.
- MM Windows is included in Windows 3.1.
- A Soundblaster driver is supposed to be available for MMPM/2.
- (However, the contract was only negotiated in June, so the
- driver may not be ready yet.)
- ...so I suppose the combination of MMPM/2 and 3.1 support for WINOS2
- ought to solve the problem, once the Soundblaster driver is out.
-
- There is also a rumor that at some future date, the run-time part

- Eric,
-
- Let me try to answer some of your questions. MMPM/2 will be required
- for you native OS/2 applications to run. Windows applications
- running in WINOS2 will require the Windows multimedia extensions.
-
- The Soundblaster driver on this BBS is for MMPM/2, and allows
- native OS/2 applications to use the Soundblaster card.

- I don't understand, and perhaps you can explain more. Using
- MMPM/2, I can play certain .wav and .mid files from a CDROM and
- an IBM M-Audio card linked to an amplifer and speakers. However,
- when I execute WINOS2 and call the same CDROM, I get the text
- and graphic files, but I can not get any sound when clicking on
- the pictured sound icons in the program. Why doesn't WINOS2 "know"
- that MMPM/2 has been loaded by config.sys, and the M-Audio card is
- there? Is the problem with what I have put in the WPS icon parameter
- to execute the CDROM program?

- That was what I needed to hear. DOS / WIN app support was my

- perhaps DOS Settings that might minimize the problem?

- Elliot,
-
- The problem is that running WINOS2 is like running Windows.
- Windows has its own multimedia extensions (part # 92F2740)
- and does not recognize OS/2's multimedia extensions. To
- run a CD driver in WINOS2 install it just like you would
- in Windows/DOS.
-
- In essence if you want to run both OS/2 and Windows multimedia
- applications you need to install BOTH MMPM/2 and Windows
- Multimedia Extensions.
-
- I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion.

-
- I've seen a data compression program for DOS that will allow 300 mb of data to
- be put on a 3M DC2120 compatable (120mb) data cartridge. Is there a program fo
- r OS/2 1.3 which will do the same thing? I'm currently using IBM PS/2 internal

- SI drive! Any other relatively inexpensive solutions out there?

- Bill,
- We use the PMTAPE 2.01 program from IBM which you should be able to update your
- OS2TAPE 1.01 to without a great cost. It has three levels of compression,
- none, level 1, and level 2. Level 2 takes more CPU, but offers the maximum
- compression, usually around 2 to 1. I have had it perform from 1.7 to 1 up to
- 2.5 to 1 on our data. I don't think you can get your whole 300+ MB disk
- on one tape if your files are normal, but this program is a great improvement
- over the OS2TAPE program you now have.

- We are a very small private university (about 150 students) and are

- Elliot,
- I got the PMTAPE 2.01 from our friendly IBM SE, after reading about it on IBMLI
- NK.
- It fixed a major problem we were having with PMTAPE 2.0, in that it seemed
- to allocate 4KB of RAM for every file it put onto a tape. You can fit up to 50
- 00 files on a tape, which means we would end up with a 20MB + swap file.
- 2.01 does not do this.
- YEA!!!
