  I have been running FORBROWSE for two weeks with no problems, and it was fine
 all day.  Now I get a strange error.  The upload doesn't work.  The IND$FILE
works fine, but the TOOLS part comes out " OOLS"  (quotes added by me).  What
am I doing wrong?

I've broke something in my Netware forum.  Anytime I try to open the
Netware from within FORBROWS I receive the following:

SYS3175
A program generated an access violation at 0002a6e8.
FORBROWS.EXE 0004

I have the other info if needed.  BTW this is running under
the GRE WIN31 beta, with PMHPO .1.b

Jack,

Do you still have 9600 problems?  I use 2400 at work with no problem.
At home I was using 9600 and having lots of download problems, after
I slowed down to 2400, those problems seem to have went away.

Perhaps it's IBMLink? But my download of files from the OS2BBS
work fine at high speed.

What kind of computer do you have this sounds like an old problem?
If you have lights on your modem, Does the 'transmit light' come
on about every three seconds during the download?

David,

I can download files in most cases with no problems, but when I try to use
FORADOWN I keep getting the "Unable to Access proper screen" or something
along those lines.  Have no problems at all at 4800.  I have 9600 both at
work and at home and have found that during the day when the link is fairly
busy I can receive appends at 9600 with little difficulty but once the system
gets less busy I have to cut backdown to 4800 or I start having the problem
again.  It's really weird, during the beta for the longest time nobody else
could even duplicate it, then David Slauson had it start happening to him at
2400, but he could run fine at 1200.  Think they are still looking at it as a
low priority problem.

I had thought we had found a fix for this. I will talk to Brent
on Monday and see if we can send you a new version of PMHPO
that has the new Communication link Module in it and see if this fixes

Brent had sent me one module just before PMHPO went public that we thougt had
fixed the problem, but as system response time changed so did the results.

Brent,

Just did some checking again today.  The Canadians are being discriminated
against here.  I don't know just how the shadowing of the fora occurs but
there is a definent problem with where ever I am downloading from.  But I
just went out to the BBS and did a find on TORVMC in the OS2MISC forum in the
menu only and came up with 44 occurances, when I check my downloaded forum, I
find the same thing on 3 times.  I really would like to see what these folks
have to say.

This is a totaly new CLM for PMHPO. I spent most of last week
rewriting this, I am using it right now for testing, the new CLM
is alot more stuble and faster. I will not go into how much
faster, right now, but faster.

Then I will look forward to seeing it and giving it a workout.  I really
would like to not have to change my setup by time of day.  I forget to do it
from time to time and make myself angry when it goofs up on me.  Have to go
in and mess around with the foradown files to get the appends it thought it
got or just down load a whole forum again.

I don't know what i did wrong, but I just can't get the BUILDDOW program
to work so I can use ForBrows.  At first I traced it down to my using non-
default directories.  So I tried using the default directories, yet it
didn't work.  I tried editing the .CMD file, but with my lack of REXX knowledge
, that failed.

Could someone please append a BUILDDOW.CMD file which is more flexible, by allo
wing the user to specify different directories?

I'm using forbrows 3.7, which came to me by mail along with 2 disks of forum fi
les.

Subject: Append problems

I am having some difficulty posting my appends to the forum.

After creating the appends offline, I use (FORAUP) to send them.

Some times this works. Often, I will receive a message with my userid
and the message that the "message is spooled" than the system (VM) will
HOLD. FORAUP attempts to continue and presents a message about an
invalid host screen. It is obvious that it is out of synch, but is this
"spooling" correct?

  I am coming in on IBMLINK over a leased line to our office using OS2CM.
It is working today.  I didn't boot over the weekend, so I don't get it.

Well, the "spooling" message (on the host) is normal.  When the host
IBMLINK system (VM) sends the append to the "master" conferencing
system, it is routed to the IBM network via the spool.  VM then informs
the userid of the event by issuing the spool message.

Unfortunately, it is difficult (impossible maybe) for FORAUP to know
precisely when the spool message will be sent to the userid, and the
message can place the 3270 session into a MORE...  or HOLDING state,
messing up the processing of programmed operators (like FORAUP).
Trying to work around unpredicatable, asynchronous events like this
is one of the real joys of EHLLAPI programming ;-(.

To reduce the likelihood of this problem occuring, I have just added
some code to the subroutine which checks for the main IBMLINK screen.
The new code in this subroutine should now do a better job of
checking/correcting for the MORE...  and HOLDING condition before
attempting to verify the main IBMLINK screen.  This will be included in
the next version of FORBROWS.

Lines 14 and 16 contain the names of the default directories.  You may
change them if you wish.  Make sure any directories you point to are
already created and have data in them...  I did not have time to test
anything but the default directories.

The only file the program creates is one called LASTAPPD.DOW.  This is
the file Forbrows is looking for to tell how much of each file neeeds
to be downloaded.  Forbrows will work fine without this file, it will
download the entire forum if it can not find a place marker.

Do not think so... That is why we have PMHPO.  The Comm. MGR. does
require Ehllapi.  See the Help for 'Forbrowse Installation'.

Are you using PMHPO Version 1.1?  You should have received it in the
mail recently?

When I create/update an append, it is not showing up in FORBROWS.
I appended to the TESTER CFORUM.  When I go to the OS2BBS thru
IMBLink via the "OS2BBS" command I see that my appends are in
the TESTER CFORUM.  I've tried "refresh current forum" in
Navigation pulldown, and get the message "The file is up-to-date".

The TESTER CFORUM shows as fully viewed in "List registered fora..."

What am I doing wrong.

After you post an append to view it you are going to have to go back thru the
FORADOWN steps and relist and then redown load the fora inorder to see your
new append or any new appends

I ran into the same SYS3175 that others have reported, but one of the attempts
also caused PMHPO to blow its cookies with a SYS3175:

Thanks for the explanation and the fix. EHLLAPI was a personal nightmare of mine
for years. It seemed that if you were a workstation/based (politically
correct?!) programmer - everyone assumed that EHLLAPI was the EASY way to talk
with an IBM Host. FORBROWS and its components do an admirable job!

A small complaint, begin able to USE Multiple Selection, Swipes, or Shift-End to
mark ALL the items to upload or download would be a welcome enhancement. Picking
each item with the mouse or keys is a bit tedious.

With everyone's help, I've managed to get most of my downloading problems
resolved.  Thanks to John Schaeffer, David Slauson, and Jack Hiatt for most of
the help.

David:  My problem using CM with FORBROWS WAS, as you indicated, with my using
the PMHPO SEND & RECEIVE commands rather than CM's versions.  I renamed them,
and downloading from CM appears to work.  I think this problem warrants a
short paragraph in the FORBREAD.ME file.

I was able to get PMHPO FORADOWN to work in a fairly dependable fashion at
home by changing the communications speed from 9600 to 4800.  I had no other
downloading problems at 9600, EXCEPT using FORADOWN.

I don't know if anything has been changed to allow it, but I downloaded all
but six of the fora today by marking all the selected fora and downloading.
I'm sure I don't have any special VM or IBMLink privileges, so I can only
assume the A-Disk space limitation is not really a problem.

Dennis,

Consider this my input on the types of download available.  I would
greatly like to see some tool that would allow compressed downloads
of the fora uploads that then decompresses on the receiving end.  I
only have 2400 baud connection so it HURTS when I've been out of touch
for a while (I actually doing this from a hotel room to ease the
crunch when I get home).

Also, instead of BookMangler (oops, I meant Master), why not IPF so
that it is compatible with VIEW that comes with OS/2?  Many of us don't
have access to BookManager.  Also, on that one, you may want to group
the books in 1-2 week "chunks" that can be pulled together (at least
in VIEW) as desired by the end user.

Just some suggestions from an interested user.

I have tried on a number of occasions (2) to download the
DBM conference file. Each time the FORADOWN blows up
with a SYS3175. After which all previously download and
viewed forums do not reflect the proper state.

Brooks, thanks very much for the detailed feedback... I'm glad things
seem to be working better now.  I agree that the doc file should be
updated to explain the hazards of running CM with the PMHPO SEND and
RECEIVE executables.  Perhaps the install program could also try to
handle this in some way.

Re. Multiple selection, etc.  I agree that some kind of "mark all items"
capability would be handy.  It seems there are more folks downloading
all of the fora (or practically all) than we anticipated.  I'll see what
I can do.

PMHPO does have support compression of text file (fora) as there beening
download, but support was left out for the reason of there was not
a substantial increase in download speed. When I say substantial I mean
at least a 100 CPS increase, and some machines it caused a decrease
in download speed. Now for the good news, Yes some, not all of the
problems, but some have been fixed and we are testing the new
code now. As normal I can not tell you when the code will come out
but we are working on making this ASAP.

Glad to see that you got going, not glad that you are having some problems.
I'm having some problems as well, but mostly from being dropped from the Host
on the PMHPO side. I have downloaded about 5 Fora and have them setup to work
properly. I hope when the Host software gets changed (Oct. 18) and the newer
version of ForBrows will clear a lot of things up, but for me PMHPO and the
Host seem to be a bigger problem. I have gotten violations with ForBrows but
nothing I haven't been able to work around.

I just sent some Email to a friend and it is VERY cumbersome to use, searching
for a person takes a lot of time (perform a Find, go through the PF8 routine
to find the person, etc...).

I hope that some future version of ForBrows will handle Email so a list can be
stored locally and the message typed offline (please don't beat me up David,
I know this has been talked about and that it is not coming soon).

I'm happy that IBM is offering better service for IBMLink, PMHPO and ForBrows
are a step in the right direction, no doubt. I like the price opposed to
Compu$erve. <g>

David,

I was wondering why it is that ForBrows takes such a long time to change a
Forum but will load the first one quickly ?

I assume this is due to information being stored about the Forum ForBrows is
leaving from to keep track of the appends of such, just curious why it takes
so long. I'm not ragging on you, just curious.

I'm getting to like the setup, but I'm still having some problems on getting
dropped from the host (downloading files with PMHPO, but Fora with ForBrows).

I hope that when the Host software gets updated on Oct. 18 it will work
better.

I get occasional exception violations with ForBrows, but have watched this
Forum and others have that appear to have some type of debug version or
something, or do I have a file that will give me that information on my local
hard disk ?

Is there a way that I can send appends and not get a notification in my
Inbasket that it was sent ? When I send an append I seem to get messages that
I have to go in and erase manually, a real PITA!

Also, I know this is probably not the Fora for this, but is there any plans
that you know if to add Auto-Login with PMHPO (preferably to the IBMLink main
menu to start using ForBrows) ? Sometimes I don't like to log off, because of
the hassle fo logging back on...

Forbrows writes a fair amount of data to FORBROWS.INI for registered
fora.  Normally, this doesn't take too long (except perhaps the first
time the fora is registered).  However, I've been told that updating
.INI files that are stored on a LAN fileserver can be enormously slower
(have not verified this myself).

The only Trap problems that I am currently aware of within FORBROWS,
are:

1) Sometimes when a "registered" forum is being loaded, under some (as
yet unknown) set of factors, while trying to find the next append to
browse, ForBrows bombs.  This does not happen a lot, and can be
circumvented by deleting the failing forum from the registered list, and
then re-loading the forum from the available fora dialog.

2) Reverse text searches sometimes cause a trap (not always).

Both problems are still under investigation.  If you come across any
other circumstances that result in a trap, please let me know in this

Alan, I did some checking and it looks like users can override the
mail response by issuing the following on the host session command line:

  TOOLS RESPONSE * FAIL

This command should result in your not getting any notification mail
unless there was a failure to post your append.  NOTE: that this will
only work for users on the HONE8x IBMLINK complex (ie. workstation
technical coordinators).  Users with WZnnnnnn userids (on the HONE2x
complex) do not have a personal A-disk (temp disk space only), and the
above solution will not work, since it depends on having a persistent
LASTING GLOBALV file.

Is there anyway to have forbrows go to the next forum that has unread messages rather than making us select them via a "file open" dialog box or through the "list registered fora..." box (it takes too long to startup, you need an option to keep it on the s
creen so I can just click on it and select the next forum I want to read.

 Is there any way to 'prune' the .CFO files in the OS2BBS directory?
 I've tried deleting them but then had to download entire forum again.
 Besides, the paging mechanism failed to work properly (more than one

Alan: I had problems with very slow changing of forums a while
ago as well. The problem ended up being where my FORBROWS.INI
file was located.  Turns out that there is an OS/2 bug that
results in TERRIBLE performance when any writes are done to an
INI file on a disk with lots (say more than 30 meg) of freespace.

On my machine it was taking over 10 seconds (!) to change fora.
I moved the FORBROWS.INI file to a partition with 10 meg of
freespace and the switching now takes a second or so. (BTW...
this problem is on my "hot list" of things to be fixed in the
Service Pack.)

David: FYI, I posted a message to Alan describing the INI file
performance problem. It turns out that the problem was NOT LAN
related, but involved the amount of freespace on a drive. (In
our case we had 100+ meg free which resulted in the painfully
slow performance I mentioned during the FORBROWS beta.)

Matt, if you mean prune a forum on your system, Yes you can, use your
favorite EDITOR (EPM) mark the lines you want to move and open another
window(IHTW) and copy/move the marked area to it.  You could then zip
that file and remove to backup media of your choice.
There are probably a couple of other ways to do this, if you want more
ideas just ask.
We "prune" the CFORUMs when they reach a certain line count(9000+-) we
are working with David Slauson, Brent Allen, (code changes) and will
make these "PRUNE" files downloadable as zip files for people who want
them.

  I like this idea too.  I download the updates once or twice a day, and
read them all.  I would like it to run right thru the updated forums, and

FORBROWS doesn't automatically set your margins for you.  To get proper
formatting you will have to set the margins in whatever editor you are using
for appends to 78 or less

While you are at it I would like the sun, the moon, and a few stars in
FORBROWS. Seriously, You've done a good job on FORBROWS and given the
limited resources, there are amazing few problems. I send Paul King some
offline utilities I have been using with FORBROWS (base on BUILDDOW), you
might want to look at them.

For both you and Joseph, it would be nice to have the ability to select a
auto logoff when a download is complete. I sometimes like to leave
communications running and go to bed (like when download a couple of meg
file)

I just executed that on the Host, I'll know if it worked after I send these.

Great! I will like that a LOT.

Another thing I would like to see is a quote function, where you could copy
marked lines to the clipboard and when you paste it, put some type of markers
in the append. One way I have gotten around this in a offline mail reader that
I was working on was to use markers like I have done above. I just changed
them, as they were ">" markers in the front of each line previously. I think
you could do this easily, but not sure what type of enhancements you will add.
I would like to see this text copied to the clipboard (i.e., with hard <CR> on
the end of the quote lines and the text so you can just paste the clipboard
into the editor.

Oh no!!!! I have it on a partition with about 200megs free. I have one
partition with only 4 megs free. Ok, now for the stupid question, how can I
change the location of the .ini file ?

I was in the midst of being a nice guy, implementing the "select all
items in the list" feature that many have been asking for.  In the
process of writing/testing the new feature, I discovered something.
It's already there (!), courtesy of PM and CUA.

Make sure the list box has the focus, then press Cntrl-/ to select all
items, Cntrl-\ to de-select.  I found this while looking up the
appropriate CUA-ish key definitions for the new function.  Apparently
it's a PM freebie in standard listboxes... ;-).  You learn sump'n new
every day.

I'll update the FORADOWN/FORAUP help to reflect this capability.

Done.  It will be in the next version of ForBrows.  The quoted text
above was copied to the clipboard using the new feature.  It will listed
as another menu item underneath "Copy marked text".  The accelerator key

A new feature I'm going to add to FORAUP is to automatically reformat
any extremely long lines to no more than 70 characters.  There have been
too many appends recently from users who are (unknowingly) posting with
obscenely long line-lengths.  This makes their appends very hard to
read.  I'm reluctant to mess with user's data in this fashion, but I'm
now convinced that it's necessary.  I know this'll make Brent happy too,
'cause I hear it gives the host-conferencing software fits.

Not many of us up this time of night. I see you are a 'WZ' user. I believe
you received a routine call 'BUILDDOW.CMD' in you start up package. Run that
and it will build a LASTAPPD.DOW from the current state of you .CFO files. I
you don't have that copy LASTAPPD.NOW to LASTAPPD.DOW and that will start
your DOWn file from the last time you did LIST from FORADOWN.

I've got no idea why you are getting a 0 length .DOW file. If you can list
your circumstances in more detail maybe one of the developers (who always
seem to be arround this forum) can help.

Until David gets the word wrap in set you margins in the editor to 77 and all
is cool.  I changed the default editor to use the EPM editor and set the
margins under OPtions - Preferences to 77 and no more problems.

I have major problems with the Search function.  I am constantly
receiving SYS3175 errors when I attempt to perform searches,
whether forward or reverse.  It seems to happen when the search
runs off the end of the forum, i.e. if the text is not found at
all or if no more occurrances can be found.  However, it doesn't
always seem to find text that I know is there.  For example, if
I bring up the FORBROWS forum, go to the first entry, and try to
search for "hidden" - as in the references to the hidden
developer's screen - sometimes it will find two occurances before
the crash, and sometimes it crashes immediately.  In this example,
both searches are in the forward direction.  Is this a general
problem, or have I done something wrong?  Or could my forum file
be corrupted somehow, so that the end-of-file marker is not
recognized (although I have not edited or touched the file in any
way, other than responding to a couple of appends, like this).

It's not your problem, but a bug in ForBrows.  I'm beginning to wonder
if I accidently regressed some code in the 'search' function, since it
worked reliably under some previous releases.  Anyway, I hope to have
some time to work on this problem over the next couple of days.  Once
I'm satisfied it's fixed (and has been tested to the satisfaction of the
BBS owners), I'll probably release the updated ForBrows (v3.71) for
downloading from OS2BBS.

Yea!!!! :-)  Our problems with OS2MISC on the host side were caused by those
256 character lines.  My "quick fix" was to just hack anything off beyond

I receive SYS3175 when doing "Find Next" (Ctrl+F) in the FORBROW.CFO,

One small problem I've had with search, is when I'm doing a reverse (backward)
search.  If I repeat the search, it always finds the same append it last
found. (I'm not explaining this very well)

Any search, even a reverse search, seems to leave one positioned AFTER the
target string.  Then a repeat of the reverse search just returns with the same
hit.  I must Page-Up before I repeat the reverse search.

One further question:

What determines the order of the fora listed in the F11 list box (within the
major groupings)?

Kevin, we've been discussing this problem recently in this forum.  The
good news is that I've just found (and fixed) the cause of this
problem.

For those who have been following the 'trap during search' discussion,
the following summarizes the cause of the problem:

  Semi-long summary:
  ------------------
  In forums with very long lines, case-insensitive searches could result
  in TRAP.  Long-lines were not getting null-terminated when copied to
  a temp string variable for upper-casing before string comparison.
  Because the long lines were not null-terminated, data overlays
  resulted in subsequent string operations, eventually resulting in a
  TRAP.  The recent proliferation of appends with *very* long lines has
  aggravated the problem.

  Short summary:
  --------------
  1) a C language 'gotcha' and/or
  2) a bonehead mistake for a long-time C-programmer to make

This may fix a couple of related TRAP problems, since the search
subroutine is used by several different ForBrows functions.  I hope
we'll be able to release the fixed version of FORBROWS (v3.71) for
download next week.

Sounds like probably the same problem.  Did you have problems downloading?
Mine was usually manifested by the "unable to access Host Screen" or whatever
that series is.  If I watched the PMHPO screen I would see the download get
started and suddenly the cursor would drop down to lower right side of screen
and no data transfer ever occured.  Dropping down to 4800 lets it work like a
champ.

I'm not a CM expert, but it is my understanding that CM's ASCII emulator
does not support HLLAPI.  If so, that would explain why the ACS3EHAP.DLL
isn't there since that is the HLLAPI support code.  Unless I'm wrong, I don't
believe that your setup will work with ForBrowse since it needs HLLAPI to
interface with the host.

From what I've seen, the order of forums listed in the Registered Fora
window is the reverse order in which the fora were registered.  The first
forum that was registered would be at the bottom of the list.  The most

We haven't forgotten about it and as you've probably noticed from the other
appends you're not the only person experiencing the problem.  It certainly
could be related to an I/O card or something like that.  I personally can run
PMHPO at 9600 for hours at a time with absolutely no problems.  This is not
good since I WANT to see the same errors you're seeing so we can try to
pinpoint the problem.  We've got some things in the works that might help
the situation, but it's hard to say for sure at this point.  I'll give you a call and
see if we can run some tests or get some better idea of how to address the
problem.

I do not have a 9600 baud modem only 2400 (if anyone wants to sent me a 9600
please do). Under FORBROWS 1.1, I could not download 2400 on the serial port
on my machine (8580-071 serial number 23-7111636); but I could using a
multi-protocol adapter. With 1.1a I can use either port. (I am using 1.1b
now). The MPA uses an 8551 and and 8273 (SDLC) chips.

File downloads from PMHPO work fine but the ForBrowse downloads
do not work well.  I get the 'improper host screen' and the cursor
is in the lower right hand corner of PMHPO.

This occurs on my PS/2 57SLC, 2400 works fine, I'll test it under
4800.

into?  I have a 57SLC here but it runs just fine at 9600.  Your machine

Jack: FYI... the machine I'm having trouble with is an IBM PS/2
Model 90 with the 16550 UART. I'm assuming that OS/2 is using

Updated my I/O card this evening as mentioned this morning.  Got a el cheapo
card to go with my el cheapo system(hand made with off the shelf parts),
found one with the 16550 uarts and downloaded all appends this evening at
about 2115 EDT this evening.  Had to occurances of the unable to access host
screen msg, which is just about a record low for this time of night for me.
Also discovered while doing this that my com port wasn't getting set up with
speeds and stuff as I thought it was.  Must have dropped that during one of
my changes.  Will check mode settings on system at work tomorrow morning and
attempt downloading the new appends at about 0400edt tomorrow and see what
happens then.  Will keep you posted.

I just downloaded todays messages at 4800 with no problems.  I'm running a USR Dual Standard
external.  I'm in Hickory and the closest number listed is Charlotte (60 miles).  When the
problem happens, I can go to the PMHPO screen and bang on the keys enough to get back to
the Main menu and restart the downloading of messages.

I'm attempting to setup the forums so that they reside on a LAN-shared
disk common to all staf on our ring.  Each individual has their own
instance of FORABROWSE on their system.

Browsing the forums works fine, but whenever I attempt to append (ctrl-A)
I get an "Unable to create append for <shared_path>; Probable cause:
HOSTSERVER= statement in FORBROWS.CTL is missing for this forum's
subdirectory...."

I've experimented with various combinations of the HOSTSERVER=, attempting
to point to shared path U:\IBM\FOO where the .CFO forums are maintained.
It 'does not stand'...  What is the appropriate syntax?  Is there an
additional step I need to take.

Try the following:
  HOSTSERVER=FOO HONE80 OS2 OS2BBS

The above example says (in essence) that for the local copy of the the
conference FOO, send appends to HONE80 userid OS2, host conference disk
OS2BBS.  Only the lowest level subdir (in your example, \FOO) is used by
FORBROWS in figuring out which conference to append to.

After that's done, make sure each user points to U:\IBM\FOO as the
"Subdir for downloaded fora files" in Forbrows's "Set installation
defaults.  Hope this helps.

I am also experiencing the same exact problems  that have been
described above when running at 9600baud.  It runs fine at 2400
and 4800.  I am using a ZOOM v32 turbo internal modem.  The
manual states that it has a 16550 UART.  I can't remeber, but
I think that one time I got it to work at 9600, with no problems.

The System is a 386-33 Clone ISA bus.  Have no problems what so
ever downloading files at 9600.  Only problems with Forbrows. If
you would like me to run any special tests let me know.

I must say that you made it a little hard to get PMHPO (required
for forbrows) In order to download it you need a working RECEIVE
command which is one  of the things that PMHPO provides.  This meant
that we had to get on to a machine with access to IBMLINK on which
we already had the receive command.  We ending up going to a DOS
machine to do this and then downloading code and carrying the code
over to one of our OS2 machines.  For many users this may not even
be possible.  PMHPO code should be placed on your other bulletin
boards that support other transfer protocols such as XMODEM, etc.

When I select "CONNECT" from the Options pull down, PMHPO terminates
leaving this message in the PMHPO.LOG dataset along with what appears
to be a thread trace.  This only happens the first time PM HPO is
executed after the folder is opened.  If I re-execute PMHPO it works
fine.  The full text of the message is:

       HPOTQ0711FTqsignal error 0 in task 4

Can anyone shed some light on what the problem may be ?

Brent,

Did the downloads again this morning fairly early from the house and
all went well on LNK1, but now I've got me system at work messed up
and can't get foradown to start for me.  Think I will just zip the
whole set from the machine at hom

me  and start all over on this one.

I did notice something unusual last night while working with PMHPO
though.  As I said I installed a new I/O card with the 16550 Uarts on
it, well apparently PMHPO is resetting something, once I run PMHPO
the existence of the 16550 is no longer recognized by my system.

There is no full line description of the fora available when using Forbrows,
but the short names are fairly accurate to content.  If you want the long

With the changes you had Paul send me and the 16550Uart in my system I have
been downloading for the last 2 evenings with absolutely no problems.  I
haven't been able to check it on my machine at work which still has the older
uarts in it because I managed to screw that machine up somehow and get errors
trying to start FORADWN.  Will try to get that straightened out and give it a
try on that configuration.  If I can't get that one working today I will put
the older I/O card back in my system here at home and try the downloads on
that tonight.  Don't know which of the items in Forbrows is different, may
have just seen them forthe first time while looking at options a little
closer but give my thanks to David.

The prune actually takes place on the OS2BBS host, and FORBROWS simply
reflects it, when a pruned forum is downloaded.  Normally FORBROWS only
downloads updates to fora, but when a forum is pruned it causes a major
mismatch to occur when FORADOWN requests the forum update; in such a
case, the entire forum is downloaded.

It's working as designed.  The pruned fora are archived on the host, and
we hope to provide FORADOWN access to archived fora in the near future.
If keeping old fora data is important to you, you may wish to
periodically back up your copies of the downloaded fora, to prevent
prunes from wiping out the old fora data.

I have not be successful in using 9600 baud for downloads (or connects
for that matter).  I am using PMHPO and trying to connect using a
"INPCS-HPO" access telephone number.  It works fine at 2400 baud.
At 4800 baud I get the signon screens just fine.  When I type in my signon
there is a LONG wait and then the next screen comes up.  No matter what
I do, eventually in the first 3 or 4 screens the system will hang up on me.
At 9600 baud the signon screen appears after a LONG LONG wait, and then
I get signed off.  My access number is the same as the INPCS-HPO access
number, which supports 1200 - 2400 baud access.  I get a successful 9600
baud connect and sometimes part or all of a ungarbled screen so it is
connecting at 9600 ok.  As others are using PMHPO at 9600, I must be
doing something wrong, but I have no idea as to what it is.  I would like to
resolve this before downloading the service pak,   any suggestions.  Thanks.

No that part of the situation hasn't changed.  It isn't really that it
doesn't recognize the com port as much as it is that it doesn't recognize the
fact that it has a 16550 Uart in there will play with a couple of things
including geting the latest comm drivers.  I have applied very few of the
fixes to  this machine at the house, except for the BLKICON, and one of the
early kernel fixes.  Will let you know what is happening after I have a
chance to play with a few things.

*sigh* This roller coaster ride is getting to me.

I think you guessed it.  Running PMHPO from a command line works.  Running
from desktop doesn't.  So I restored OS2*.INI and reinstalled PMHPO desktop
objects.  Now everything works.  Believe this may be another symptom of a
problem I'm having with NTS/2 installs of desktop objects.  (PMHPO was
installed with NTS/2 over our network)

The adventure continues.

What were you doing over on the OS/2 Shareware BBS??

I didn't get a chance to do as much playing around as I wanted to
last night, but the 9600 does seem a whole lot more stable,
downloaded all of yesterdays appends with no problems what so ever
about 1900-2000edt.  This moring when I tried to download any appends
that had occured overnight I saw 2 instances of the unable to connect
to host screen type of msg.

On the comm port situation.  I rebooted my home system last night
when I got there, and did a MODE COMn  and I see a setting of
BUFFER=AUTO which I would expect with the 16550uarts on the board, I
ran several different com apps, PCPlus, PMComm, Prodigy, and then
PMHPO.  After each of these I did a MODE COMn and saw the
BUFFER=AUTO, that is until I ran PMHPO, after that is run I see the
BUFFER=N/A.  I tried resetting it to AUTO, but apparently the system
can no longer see that this is a 16550Uart.

As reported earlier, I am also having the problem downloading at
9600 baud. Here is my configuration information that can be
"merged" with Jack's and see if any patterns emerge.

Symptom: 3270 cursor "stuck" in lower right corner of PMHPO
screen when do repeated downloads from FORBROWS at 9600 baud.
Problem does not occur when step down to 4800 baud.

Software levels:
  OS/2 2.0 + patches for SWAPPER expansion and new mouse driver
  PM-HPO Version 1.1b
  FORBROWS Version 3.70

Hardware:
  IBM PS/2 90 0G9
  120 meg harddrive (32 meg is HPFS, rest is FAT)
  Modem is a U S Robotics Worldport. (9600 baud V.32 with MNP 5
    support)

A quick question, does your system have the 16550Uarts?  If so is PMHPO
resetting so that appear not to be?  i.e.  If I do MODE COMn before using
PMHPO I see BUFFER=AUTO as I would expect with 16550s, but after PMHPO i see
BUFFER=N/A, which to indicates that PMHPO is preventing me from using my
hardware to it's full capability as I can't reset with a reboot, and I sure
don't want to reboot every time I check in here.

I am using a CompuAdd 420s - 486sx 20 Mhz 8 Megs Ram, running
PMHPO on COM2.  This same modem downloads from other sources
at speeds up to 19200 every day including the IBM NSD board.  The
modem is a Telebit T2500  V.32 V.42 V.42bis MNP5 and PEP capable.
Once again:  I connect at 9600 with PMHPO, but we have LONG LONG
delays and then the other end hangs up.  It is almost usable at 4800, but
will hang up after 3 or 4 screens are displayed.  At 2400 it works perfectly.
I am accessing the system through  a IL type password now,  but the same
thing happened using a WZ password.  I am running PMHPO 1.1a and
forbrows 3.70.  I am sure it is something I have set up wrong, but I have
not been able to find it.  Thanks for you help.

Sounds like you should call the IIN folks on your problem.  I run at 9600 all
the time using PMHPO and before that the INPCS DOS package with out the kind
of problems you indicate.  Call the help number on the IIN screen they maybe
able to help you iron out your problems as it sounds like it with them that
the problem lies, not with the Link or OS2BBS.

Calling IIN won't help in this case.  They don't do any PMHPO support at
this time.  The number to call would be the OS/2 BBS Help Desk at

Jim, Something to try would be to turn off the modem's error correction.
I had to do this to get my Viva 9642e to run at 9600.  In the HPODIAL.DAT
file immediately before the section with:

    action.
      message:               Dialing %n.

I added the lines:

    action.
      command:               AT &K0 &Q0^M.
      timeout=continue:      5.                   1/2 second pause
    eaction.

No guarantees that will fix it, but perhaps your modem is having a problem
talking to the IIN modem and this might help it out a bit.  Let us know if
that hurts or helps and we'll see what else we can try to correct the problem
for you.

I am seeint the following problem and want to know if the system should eventually resync or
if I need to completely refresh the forum when this happens.

I start a download of updates for a forum, but this fails to actually complete.  However the file
is posted as downloaded in my appends posted file.  An attempt redo the download of course
is ignored since the forum is now considered upto date.

I just had a more severe error during DOWNload.  The LASTAPPD.NOW
was wiped out I.e empty after a download list requested.  Thereafter nothing

Jack: I ASSUME the machine has the 16550... since I'm pretty sure
IBM has been shipping that UART in all its machines for quite a
while.

I just jumped out and checed about the BUFFER parm, and sure enough
the value is set to BUFFER=N/A. If PMHPO is shutting off the
internal buffers in the UART, then that could easily explain why
I get failures at high baud rates.

When I download fora, there is no way to know which ones have new appends in

The feature you are asking for is already there.  It's in the registered fora
list.  Those with new appends with sort to the top of list.  Then if you
chose "Start with Registered" and "New Forum on Last" you will bounce back to
that list.

"Start with registered fora" is a new selection under the "Options" menu
in the new release of FORBROWS (v3.71).  Jack is beta-testing the new
version and probably forgot that not everyone has it yet...

Sorry I have been away this weekend had some work to. I will agree
with that turn off the compress on the modem, this should fix the
problem. If not append what happens here. On to the next problems, If
anyone can find away to repeat the 'cursor in the lower right
hand corner' problem I can spend some more time on it, for now it
appears to have to do with the fixes you'll have installed on your
systems. We will be trying different fixes on a test bed to see
if we can repeat the problem. Is there anyone out there that
has had this problem on GA code no fixes added?

I've been able to change to BUFFER=AUTO using the MODE command.
No shutdown was required.  I think the trick is that all of the CTS, DSR,
etc. parameters have to be set in such a way to support AUTO.  I haven't
figured out exactly what has to be turned on how, but it CAN be done.

Okay think when I logoff this time I will shutdown and bring the system back
up, copy down the settings that I have at that point and set me a little mode
.cmd file to set them properly.  With the latest code set that I'm running I
have had very few failures over the last couple of days, and this has been
downloading at both busy and non-busy times of day.  Think it is getting
closer all the time.  WIll keep you posted of any problems encountered.

Brent,
   I saw your append to Jim about adding the &K0 and &Q0 to the
the HPODIAL.DAT dataset, and decided to give it a try.

   Well I'll be it works.  Since changing it I have been downloading
at 9600 with no problems. I didn't use the &K0 though because my
manual says that if you specify &M0 or &Q0 the Modem ignores the
&K commands.

You probably don't need the &K0 anyway.  &Q0 is the actual error
correction setting.  I only had &K0 in my setup because another comm
package required that I turn flow control (&K) off and I guess I left it in
there when I was trying to figure out what it took to get things to work.
Once it worked, I wasn't about to change it!

Jack, Guess what?  I actually saw the your 9600 problem last night (once)!
I don't know if that's good or bad.  Bad: It still isn't 100% fixed.
Good: Maybe I can reproduce it now.  I don't know, but I'll keep plugging.
Perhaps the difference is that, based on another append, I installed the
kernel and mouse fixes.  I had not installed any fixes prior to that.
Hopefully this will get us closer to positively identifying the exact
problem.

This last week and weekend were bad ones for me as a very close friend passed
away, and most of my downloads were late at night and at this point I have
had only two occurances of the problem with the latest set of code Paul sent
me.  Will keep plugging and reporting any problems encountered.  I have to
try to rebuild my setup at work, somewhere when inserting the latest code I
screwed things up and could get it to load at all last week.  But was only
working mornings and was off every afternoon and didn't really have time to
look at what I had done to it.  Will try to straighten it out tomorrow so I
can try the downloads under load too.

Jack, This may not be a PMHPO problem after all.  APAR PJ04736
is about the MODE command incorrectly showing BUFFER=N/A when it
was really in AUTO mode.  The fix is included in the Service Pak.  I've
tried it and confirmed that after running PMHPO, it will now show AUTO.

Haven't seen any signs of any additional bugs being introduced it all appears
to be working just fine.  As I said I like the mods to the New Forum on Last
Append feature.  That works great for me.  Was wondering it seems you  have
some redunant options, is in Options you have "Scrolling Across Appends" and
in Navigation there is "View One Append at a Time"  haven't played around to
see which has presidence or if they are really the same as I read them.

Are you the person coding PMHPO ? If so, I have some suggestions. If not,
ignore this and I'll try to find out who to send this to.

I want to have the ability to at least run some type of scripts to automate
PMHPO. To call and get new appends for selected Fora and upload all appends
that are waiting.

Is this capability possible ? I run a BBS and it calls another hub every
morning at 4:30am to exchange mail. I would like to have PMHPO do that for me,
and I don't need the timer section as there are programs that do work for
that (like Chron), but what IS needed is the ability to tell PMHPO to
automatically log on and get all new appends (i.e., update selected Fora) and
send all the appends...

  I noticed that IBM has a new BBS today.  The CICS BBS was announced
today.  It would be great if you added support to FORBROWSE for this new
BBS.  Should I add a comment on their BBS to encourage them to help you?
They have an OS2 product, and should even be able to test for you.  The
time difference is a hassle though.  I love using this tool, and I really
hate to go backwards!

Well, those two options aren't really redundant; "View one append at a
time" toggles whether the user views the forum as a flat file, or only
one append at at time.

I've been hoping to enhance FORADOWN so that it could be invoked
periodically from a REXX .CMD program and automatically "List" all the
files, mark all or selected files, then download them, and exit.
FORADOWN would *not* perform an auto-logon to IIN/IBMLink... that would
have to be done before FORADOWN is invoked, possibly by the REXX .CMD
program that calls FORADOWN.

I'm not yet sure how hard it will be to add these automated download
features to FORADOWN.

Sorry, pressed send to soon. FORBROWS does this now it's just not done
on a timed basis, FORBROWS would also have to be 'scriptable'. If
I remember currently FORBROWS uses some mainframe programs to do this.

I think part of what I want would have to be done from you, and the other part
would have to be done with PMHPO.

Basically I would want to have the ability to have this software
(i.e., PMHPO/ForBrows) to call and get the new appends for me automatically,
on a scheduled basis. I have been around this type of *offline* messaging for
a while and as traffic gets higher (which it WILL) you need to set time aside
to transfer the *NEW* mail).

I run PCBoard software which you probably are not familiar with, but it has an
event which can be run. I only run one event, and it calls my hub (mine is
only about 10 miles away, but a hub would handle an area, my hub handles
Calif, Ariz., Nev., Col., Ore., etc...).

The greatest thing about this IBMLink to me is the fact that we have this IBM
IIN that is our backbone to the network.

But we still need a way to automate our transfers with a scheduler so that the
appends are updated, both on the host and remote (remote really being just
another copy of the Fora wherever they sit, LANs, Hard Disks, Hosts, etc...

As a user, I don't care where the software goes. But I had suggested that the
PMHPO and the ForBrows were one unit (i.e., Tapcis, Golden Compas).

I just want to read and reply to messages, the rest should be transparent to
me. The system should handle the fact that appends need to be sent to the host
by checking when he is at the host. I use an event and a batch file under DOS
for my BBS, I guess what I'm asking for is a mechanism to automate my
transfers so I don't have to manually do it myself.

What if ForBrows called up PMHPO (with the ability to close him also) ?

Actually if the programs stay as seperate entities, some type of IPC will have
to be used for the programs to communicate with each other, *IF* you ever
wanted to create such a type of automation.

I sometimes download Forums at work or at home.  What do I need to copy from
one system to another to allow me to resynch my forums on both machines (and
be able to use FORBROWS to read and respond to appends which were actually
downloaded from the other machine).

I tried copying FORBROWS.INI, LASTAPPD.*, and all the *.CFO files to the
proper subdirectories but the result had some problems.  Is some of the
information in EA's which I lost using diskettes as intermediate storage (I
actually made two *.ZIP files out of the *.CFO files using PKZIP2).

TIA for any suggestions.

Sometimes (I don't have a good handle on when this happens), the shortcut
(accelerator) keys do not work in FORBROWS.  The ones in question are the
"r" & "R" and "s" & "S" keys.  The buttons at the bottom of the screen
continue to work.

Other keys such as F4, F11, and F3 seem to work fine.  Plus occasionally
the shortcut keys above work.

Has anyone else seen this behavior (and can offer a solution)?

Forbrows does not use EA's so you are safe from problems in that area.
Here's what FORBROWS uses/needs (other than the .EXEs, etc):

  - Make sure the subdirectory structure for appends and downloaded
    fora is the same on both machines.  FORBROWS.INI points to specific
    files on specific disks (or net aliases), and when
    FORBROWS builds appends it cross-references
    the lowest level subdir (usually \OS2BBS) with an entry in
    FORBROWS.CTL.  In other words, if you store fora on C:\OS2BBS on
    one machine, store it in C:\OS2BBS on the new machine as well.
    That way all pointers and cross-references stay preserved.
    The same applies for the \APPENDS and \APPEND\POSTED subdir.

  - Copy LASTAPPD.DOW, FORBROWS.INI, FORBROWS.CTL to the new machine.
    You might also copy LASTAPPD.NOW, but that's optional since
    FORADOWN "List" will build a new one from the IBMLink host.
    LASTAPPD.DOW goes into your \APPENDS\POSTED subdir.

  - OS2.INI points to your copy of FORBROWS.INI... no need to copy
    OS2.INI to the new machine, simply select "Set registered fora
    filename" under the "Options" menu in FORBROWS after installing
    it on the new machine, and point to the FORBROWS.INI that you
    copied.

I think that about covers it.  Once things are set up, you should only
have to copy LASTAPPD.DOW and FORBROWS.INI when you move between the
two machines.

What is the best (easiest) way to submit an append on an entirely new
subject using FORBROWS.  I tried pretending like I was answering an
append, and then editing the Subject Line, etc.  But when I tried to
upload my new append, I got an error pop-up saying that I didn't have
a valid append header (or words to that effect).

I've always been kinda a slow learner.

FORBROWS.CTL contains "control" information, primarily for interacting
with the OS2BBS host system.  For most people, they should never have to
touch it, and it will be identical in content on their different
systems.  It will not make any difference whether you use PMHPO or CM,
as long as you have the correct EHLLAPI DLLs installed on your
respective systems (ACS3EHAP.DLL for CM, and TAPHLL32.DLL for PMHPO).
Of course, you also have to set the correct radio button (CM vs PMHPO)
in the "Set installation defaults".  If you use CM, you need to rename
SEND.EXE and RECEIVE.EXE as distributed by PMHPO (but I think you
tackled that problem earlier ;-)

Yep.  FORBROWS.INI will contain mis-matching file pointers for the
"registered" fora.   If you can somehow change to D: at home, things
should get healthier...

Yes, PMHPO and FORBROWS do talk to each other using HLLAPI. We have
talked about this and other things we and you'll would like to see added
to PMHPO, but I will not send out a PMHPO that is not ready, we are in
the middle of locking in the next version of PMHPO down. So at this
time we are getting the new things we have added to PMHPO, to work.
When we start looking at the next phase of PMHPO, I am sure that
some of the things that have been asked for in this forum and others
will be looked and considered. Sorry if sound a little HOT, I am not
I have to agree with some things said in this forum and others.

Just one question. Wouldn't one of the other IPC facilities be more effecient
for that. A Named Pipe seems so much more effecient, maybe I'm just mistaken.

  You people were so helpful in getting my 9600 baud problems
resolved, that I was wondering if you could assist me in getting forbrows to
work with CM.
  I put forbrows on my system at work, which does not have PMHPO,
only CM connected to a 3174 via 3270 adapter.  I know that I have
EHLLAPI support, because I use it in some REXX exec's to logon at
power-up.  Just to be safe I checked for the DLL files mentioned in
the the FORBROWS.INF file, and there is one that is not on my system
(RNLCHARS.DLL).  Do I need this? If so what ES disk is it on?
  Well I went along and brought up forbrows anyhow, and I selected
download forum files.  I waited and waited..... Then I got the
following. RC=78 From RECEIVE C:\OS2BBS\POSTED\LASTAPPD.NOW.
  What am I doing wrong?

Cesar,

  Assuming you are still accessing the OS2BBS through IBMLink,
all that you need to do to get FORBROWS working with CM is
set the radio button for CM or PMHPO under Installation defaults
and rename the RECEIVE.EXE and SEND.EXE that came with PMHPO
so that the CM versions are used instead. I believe that's all
you need to do.

I've had this problem also, and the solution is ridiculously
simple (or maybe I am - I'm never really sure).  The "Caps Lock"
key seems to disable the shortcut keys.  Just unlock it and the
problem disappears, at least on my machine.

I have a few questions:

1)  I just started receiving an error at startup.  After clicking
    on the FORABROWS Icon and before anything else displays, I get
    a box which says "Invalid path FORBROWS.EXE".  I click on the
    OK box and everything continues as normal.  This is new - I
    started receiving it this week after I repartitioned my D:
    drive into 2 smaller ones, even though I put everything back
    where I found it (my mother taught me well).  This included
    FORBROWS.EXE and all associated files.  Oh yes, the question.
    How do I get rid of this message?  It's just an annoyance, but
    I don't particularly like being annoyed.

2)  What is the little document icon along the left edge of the
    title bar of FORBROWS for?

3)  Is it possible to set up FORADOWN and FORAUP to be executed
    independently of FORBROWS?  I've added them to a folder, but
    when I try to start them, they come back saying they need a
    string of parameters, some of which I'm not sure I would be
    able to hard-code.  For example, FORADOWN is expecting a
    listsubdir, a forasubdir, a VMid, a VMmdisk, a HostType, and
    a TermType.  Are any of these dynamically generated, depending
    on which HONE system I log onto, or where my A disk is?  How
    cvan I tell my HostType, etc, etc.

Thanks for such a great product.  I'm looking forward to the next
release - drooling in my soup, so to speak.

I do not think so FORBROWS just calls a DLL with a 16 Bit entry
point which in turn calls the HLLAPI function directly. 32 bit HLLAPI
programs might be faster because there is no 'thunking' involed at
all, there is a 32 bit entry in the same DLL as the 16 bit entry points.

   I don't have PMHPO installed so I don't think that is the problem.
 I checked under "Set installation defaults", and the radio button
that is on is the one for OS/2 Comm Mgr.  Could I be experiencing
some type of timing problems?  I have no problems downloading files from the
BBS.

1) Not sure.  Try checking "Options", "Set installation defaults", and
check the editor filespec field.  If it says "FORBROWS.EXE", try
changing it to point explicitly to d:\subdir\FORBROWS.EXE, where
d:\subdir is the the exact drive and path that FORBROWS.EXE resides in.
Such a setting tells FORBROWS to use it's own built-in MLE-based editor
for creating appends.

2) Its a "Drag" icon, for drag and drop support.  While browsing a
forum, you can drop on an EPM (ie. enhanced editor) window, for example.
However, FORBROWS's drag & drop code does not (yet) use the standard
OS/2 DRAG/DROP APIs... that part of FORBROWS was implemented before such
calls existed, but we needed the drag&drop function here at Watson
Research in order to interact with some other tools that we all run on
our LAN.  For the curious, it uses the old OS/2 1.x FileManager
drag&drop conventions.

3) Yes, it's possible, and will probably be supported in the future.
Most of the parms are derived from the ForBrows default settings and
from info in FORBROWS.CTL.  The Termtype parm is either PMHPO or CM.
However, I'm a bit leery of discussing this particular method of
operation in detail, since it might cause some users more problems than
it would solve.  But for the hackers out there, the above info might
contain enough hints to make it work.  ;-)

It's a feechur.  Since some of the navigation buttons are defined simply
as upper or lower case letters (S, s, R, r) then CapsLock will affect

PSS:  I just had a severe problem trying to send this item.  I had
tried to use the option to modify an append (The append line at that
time I have marked with -->). After uploading this item, the upload
program followed it with a command that would not fit in the single
input line on the IBMLINK main menu causing it to wrap and overlay
the front of the command.   Therefore that command and the send
append failed.

I have been noticing an intermittent problem lately.  If I view all my
registered fora, then hit F11 and select a forum that I have completely
viewed something odd happens.  It brings up the last item in the
forum (correctly), but when I push the "Prev<-" button, I get the
"No more appends!" message at the bottom.  This doesn't always
happen, but often enough that I know that I am not going crazy.  What
is really curious about this, though, is that if I keep hitting the
"Prev<-" button, eventually it does take me to the previous item.
I have verified this with 3.70 and 3.71.  BTW, I am running this
under OS/2 2.0 with 32-bit GRE and Windows 3.1 support is loaded.

Sorry to give you another "It's really great, but..." letter.  I really
am happy with ForBrowse, in general.

  I installed the new Forbrowse tonight.  I unziped the package, and copied
the files into my Forbrowse directory.  I ran the program, and most of it
worked fine, however I could not start FORADOWN.  I think it must be
something I did, but I don't know what.  To ensure this doesn't hit someone
else, please document the proceedure for installation over an old release.
  I have it running fine now, and I really like the new registered forum
features.  I was disapointed that there is no way to quickly mark the 10
fora I want updated.  I will hope for that in 3.80.  I will let you know if
anything else pops up.

The error goes by pretty fast, but it looked like TOOLS was entered, and then
the cursor wrapped back, and entered a blank at the begining of the line.  Last
time the error went away on its own.  Any ideas?  Once it fails, it keeps on
failing.  I don't remember what I did last time to clear it up.

Hey... I got a call from some marketeer from Microsoft today.
Seems they wanted to know what word processor (Describe 32-bit
version), and spreadsheet (Excel for PM) I was using.  We had a very
nice conversation once I made it perfectly clear that I WAS NOT
interested in a copy of NT, since I already had an OS that ran all
my DOS and Windows apps.

She seemed genuinely interested in how I felt about OS/2. After
gushing with praise for OS/2 for about 5 minutes, I convinced her
to submit a request to development for an OS/2 native version of
Excel. (Lots of emphasis on multithreading, etc...) I used Describe
as an example of what a good OS/2 app could do... and it seems my
point got across. (At least I hope so.)

What you're seeing happens because of the way in which FORBROWS loads
fora.  Many forum files are quite large, so to improve "perceived"
responsiveness, FORBROWS loads a forum in 2 stages.  The forums are
loaded by a secondary thread; it first (stage 1) tries to locate the
next append, and load enough of the forum to display it and a few
subsequent appends.  The 2nd thread then tells the main thread that it
can now display the append, and the main thread will then do so.  In the
meantime, the 2nd thread resumes loading the remainder of the forum
(stage 2).  During stage 2, if you try to scroll backward in the forum,
you will see the "No more appends" message (since the main thread does
not yet know about previous appends).  Once the 2nd thread finishes
loading the entire forum, FORBROWS will let you scroll wherever you
wish.

There are several variations on the above scenario (sometimes the next
append is not where expected, due to insertions, etc), but the previous
paragraph conveys the main idea.  Probably what I need to do is have a
more informative message displayed rather than having the "No more
appends" message performing double-duty; something like "File is still
being loaded; try again in a few moments..."

  I suspect that it has to do with messing up the header.  I rebooted to
clear the problem, shutting down Forbrowse doesn't seem to do it.  I tested
it this morning, and it is working fine.  I will paly some more to see if I
can repeat the error.  I will append if I get a hit.  It is SO NICE to have
someone take an interest in these problems.  I keep thinking "how would MS
have handled this?"

Found the problem, and it's an odd one.  In my program reference
settings, I generally avoid placing explicit path information so
that I can feel freer to move things around.  I figure as long as
it's in the PATH, it should run with no problems.  (NOT!!)  If I
just use FORBROWS.EXE as the program name, I get the above error,
although it doesn't seem to affect anything beyond that point.
Using the explicit path - D:\PGMS\FORBROWS.EXE - clears it up.
I am not aware of any other programs which require this.

Any ideas or comments?

BTW, I just downloaded version 3.71.  Nice!  I like the "Quoted
Copy" and the "Start with Registered Fora".  However, the above
situation remains.

I've been waiting a while before responding to this, hoping that
someone could give you a better (read that: "official") answer.
I had the same type of problem when I first installed FORBROWS,
including having all the settings correct, missing the RNLCHARS.DLL
file, and the unexplainable RC from RECEIVE.  I'm not sure that
this is what fixed it, which is why I'm hesitant to pass it on, but
if you're still not running, it can't hurt...  It has been mentioned
that FORBROWS will get confused by the presence of the PMHPO versions
of SEND and RECEIVE.  I did not have PMHPO installed, but I did have
an old copy of the DOS versions, from a PC3270 setup.  They were
not in the path or anything (at least not for OS/2, but PC3270 WAS in
my AUTOEXEC.BAT), but when I renamed them, poof! the problems cleared
up and I have not had any since.  As I said, I'm not at all sure that
this was the source of or the solution to the problem, but FORBROWS
didn't work, and now it does, and I ain't messin' with it.  Obviously,
if your situation is not the same, this won't apply, but we won't
have lost anything in the process.

Good luck.  If this works for you too, I think someone should
probably look into it.

Suddenly, uploads no longer work.  I am getting a HLLAPI error sending
the SENDTO, which runs off the end of the input line on the IBMLink
home screen.  I notice that the input field is cut off about 4 bytes from
the actual right margin.  I'll open a FEEDBACK in case it's IBMLink's fault.

  It's worth a shot.  I do not have PMHPO on my disk, but I do happen
to have two versions of PC3270 for Windows, 2.0 and 3.0.  Let me see

OK, that one worked.

Before, it was trying to do something like:

TOOLS SENDTO ....  forum CFORUM at 15:54:10 on 92

This may have been triggered by an inadvertant attempt to do a "modify
current append" on someone else's append.  However, when I saw that this
had happened, I erased that file and tried to send again, and got this.
There may perhaps have been some residual data?  I notice that when
it works, there is nothing to the right of CFORUM.

Anyway, it seems to work now.

Note that I said that I now can only "afford" to spend 1/4 of my time on
ForBrows.  In reality, I still spend more time than that.  Sorry if I
was being a bit disingenuous.

I also don't want to leave the impression that my manager is not
supportive of computer conferencing...  in fact, just it's just the
opposite.  He's been one of the real internal champions of conferencing,
and has stuck by it and vigorously defended it, even when some
influential folks did not always approve.  He's allowed me to spend a
lot of time on the OS2BBS/Forbrows development effort, even though
there was no real funding for doing so.

It's just that, inside IBM, as in much of the rest of the world, OS/2
development skills are in *extremely* high demand at the moment, and we
have a list of projects that need attention.  As the popularity of
OS2BBS increases (the TalkLink announcement should help), I expect that
"official" priorities will shift back toward ForBrows.  But for at least
a month or so, I have to try to get caught up on some other work (which
will *also* involve keeping real customers happy).

I would appreciate an answer about download's that abort.  I am not sur
why they abort but I then end up with a FORUM out of sync with the
LASTAPPD.dow file.  One of the people here has suggested, nd I
tried and it seemed to work, editing the file to put back the correct info.
Put needless to say this is a bit unfriendly and require that you
download updates to each forum 1 at a time and make sure they
complete.

As near as I can tell the download's unusally fail due to a timeout in the
receive code.  If a flip over to the IBMLINK screen it is still waiting to
start the download.

Note also my pss about line overlay when I tried to modify my own append.
This would seem to be similar to the problem mention in other people
append entered after mine about HLLAPI error and about failure to
send with FORBROWS 3.71.  What they all hint at is that it would be
a good idea for FORBROWS to check out the syntax of the APPEND
line a little more before trying to use it.

(somewhat) similar problem awhile back when using an older version of
PMHPO.  Are you using the latest PMHPO (v1.1b)?  If not, it's available

I know I'm not John, but I had a send to failure last night sending a message
to this forum. I was actually telling you have I like the quote feature,
thanks a bunch for adding that. Some readers put a line above the quote that
says, "at 15:54:10 on 92/10/23, David Slauson said", not sure if you want to
add that.  It helps at times when trying to figure out when/who
the quote came
from.

Most of the offline readers have ability to add a tagline to the message.  Is
it possible to implement something of this ?  Have a combo box pop down and
allow the user to append their own tagline after their name, or in between
their name...(ala Wayne "" Holmes as people refer to). CI$ people have been
doing this for quite a long time and other BBS systems as well. Have an ASCII
file that gets read to append the tag of choice by the user, and allow them to
add, edit, detlete tags...

That way we could steal all of Wayne's tags...roar!

I think I would rather tag the message after the signature though, something
like I'll put on this one...

I do have a couple of suggestions, however, for future releases:

1.  I would considerably increase the timeout delays in FORADOWN
and FORAUP.  I noticed earlier today that when IBMLink (and
likely IIN) were busy, FORADOWN was giving up just about the
time the IND$FILE started running.  A small aside:  Is there
some good way to abort IND$FILE execution without killing off the session?
 I note that there is a 4-character input line left at the lower
right of the screen, and things typed in disappear.  But none

When I go back and read the append I just submitted, I wonder what the
heck went wrong!  The formatting is impossible, and there are pieces

I had a downloading problem that left a "hole" in the middle of the OS2MISC

I realize that I could likely have gone in and manually modified files to

I agree with all of this completly. Can any joe-blow off the street get on
TalkLink for $18 a month ? Is so, I agree that it will become a good means of
support for a lot of different stuff. The fact is that it is cheaper than CI$
and if it was available for $18 a month (prodigy was about $10 a month when it
started), it would be a wise investment.

Since I already access the OS2BBS, what do I get for my $18 a month ? (ANYBODY
feel to jump in on this one from IBM)

There are some things I that would like to see in ForBrows and I am mentioning

Alas, I must make two notes upon that text.

1) "Forum" is not a simple case of a 2nd-declension neuter
Latin noun.  There is some doubt whether it even has a plural.
(To be fair, though, if there were native speakers of Latin
today, they would probably use "fora" as the plural of "forum".
That's the kind of thing that happens with languages.  In
any case, there is no doubt that "fora" has become the accepted
term ever since CompuServe renamed every "Special Interest Group"
("SIG"), "Forum".

2) Much to my amazement and horror, I have spotted several

I just downloaded forabrow 3.71 and configured it to work with OS/2 comm
mgr.  I got the list of forums downloaded properly, but when I attempt to
download a forum I get the CMS message

MSG FROM userid:REIPLING DUE TO STORAGE ABEND; CLEAR SCREEN TO CONTINUE

I have tried both yesterday and today and still get the same CMS error.

Is there some configuration parameter I need to set to get this to work
or is this a CMS problem?

   I still experiencing problems trying to download the Forums, using
Comm Manager.  Here briefly is what's going on.

   1.  I have 3270 session B logged on to IBMLink main menu.
   2.  Start Forbrows, and select Conference/Download Fora or files from host.
   3.  Click on list.
       Everything is OK. I get the list of Fora (not yet downloaded).
   4.  Select a fora to download.
   5.  Things look like they are working. Then I get the following.

After clicking on the OK button the foradown box shows up and says.
Timeout waiting for DDTGETDL results.  Host screen is sitting on the
IBMLink Mainmenu.

Now this doesn't happen all the time, at other times I get sent all the way
back to the IIN product selection screen.

As I stated on an earlier post, I don't have any problems downloading any
programs.

  Well I tried to download BBSBROWS, which seems to be small
I got sent back to the IIN screen, couldn't cancel Foradown. Had
to wait till about 5 minutes for OS2 to come back and say that
it could not communicate with Forbrows. No data will be saved.
So I pressed the enter box and Foradown ended.  At least I can
get it from home with a modem, but I would still like to be
able to use it with COMM Manager.

There were some posts here earlier about using FORBROWS with CM, seems like
some files had to be renamed or something.  Didn't realize you were under CM
and there are some difference, but when I tried to download the two largest
fora got that re-ipl msg which I had seen when the file was too large, or
when someone had sent an append will an extremely long line in it.

Good luck hope you get it straightened out.

I have just downloaded the new versions of PMHPO (1.1b) and FORBROWS
(3.71). My third download failed at 4800 baud. I had been using 4800
baud mostly sucessfully using the prior versions (98% sucess rate).
The prior versions failed at 9600 baud, as reported by many others here.

The symptom of the failure is just what had occurred before: a download
was requested:
FORADOWN started a RECEIVE on another process, the pop-up window came up
to indicate the number of bytes transferred, and then nothing further
occurred for about 2 many
minutes. Eventually, a pop-up displayed indicating that the download
failed (RC=79, I think)

and the PMHPO screen was blanked. Hitting <ESC> 6 or 7 times
restored the IBMLINK main screen.
Subsequent downloads occured properly.
I was hoping for some relief from this problem so that I could
go back to 9600 baud. My system
is fairly generic: AMI Enterprise II 486/50, 16550 UARTS, ...
I am using the 2210 COM.SYS driver
under the 6/17/92 OS2KRNL.

Is there any diagnostic information I can gather to help solve
this problem?

1.  I just downloaded 3.71, iRC=1 on START /PMpecial to do in order not to

                             C:\APPS\TELECOMM\FORBROWS\OS2BBS\9210281.149.
    The filename changes for each Append I try to create.
3.  Is there any hope that due to your slow/no_work_available<g> schedule,
    that you might port (re-write) ForBrowse so that it will work as an
    offline reader for the NSC BBS?  I realize this is doubtful, but I still
    have to ask.

It seems that 3.71 may be slightly worse in doing 4800 baud downloads than
the prior (3.70?) version. I have not tried 9600 baud with 3.71.

by a new version of FORBROWS.  Since the PMHPO developers monitor this
program, perhaps they can try to get you a beta copy of the upcoming

PMHPO supporters:

I installed the Service Pack released on 10-20-92 to IBM internal folks
on my L40SX previously running GA 2.0.  I even went BACK through the
selective install to add the 32-bit (VGA) display driver.  Everything
looked good until the first time I tried to get into OS2BBS from
IBMLink (usually, I just log on to IBMLink and use ForBrows).

Well, yesterday (10-28-92) they had some form about a new signon that
wanted my real name.  That form would paint about 1/2 way and lock up
PM (I have a dynamic CPU chart that even froze).  It required a big
(actually little) white (not red) power switch to get my machine back.

I called right back and got the same behavior going into OS2BBS.

Well, now they have eliminated the offending screen and I can get into
OS2BBS and browse around.  However, if I elect to download anything, I
get the header and part of the first line of the session selection
screen and its back to the same lockup (power down to recover).

I have the "official" "final?" Service Pak coming tomorrow from my SE
and will give it another try then, but I suspect I will see the same
behavior (I just hope I don't have to go back to GA to re-apply it).

Also, on my L40, PMHPO seems to chew 100% of the CPU just pulling down
screens at 2400 baud!  Anything to be done about that?  I get MUCH
faster response at home with only about a 25% cpu drain (also at 2400
baud, but on a 33 Mhz 486 clone).

Just my observations and I hope PMHPO isn't broken on the new service
pak (especially on L40's).

What version of PMHPO are you using? There are problems if you are
running below version 1.1b. I hope this helps.

How do you rate so high? You can get the SP from your Se with no problems
but I am being told that to get it through the local SE's would cost me over
$800.

By the way I have the same problems with mt 16Mhz 8580. I was told to buy a
faster machine. You should be ashamed of youself for ask IBM to do what they
promised. You are supposed to go out and buy a ThinkPad.

When is this release going to be put up. I have been having problems at 9600
and would like to get it fixed if possible. I was thinking that I needed to
add some settings to my .DAT file for the modem I'm using. I have an HST at
work (dual standard) and an Intel 14.4ex at home, both work to download kind
of, but lock up...

I have a 20mhz 80-161 at home and PMHPO just about pulls it down. At work I
have a model 95 and it is MUCH better about PMHPO, it just appears to need a
lot of horsepower, like everything else in the world...<g>

I have IBM assurances that a 16Mhz 8580 is enough to run OS/2 and multiple
tasks. If it isn't IBM should state so now and not continue this nonsense.
My campaign is direct and honest: IBM either make OS/2 with appplication
such as PMHPO fubctional a the level advertised quickly or admit a higher
level box is needed. For those of us who have been taken in by the low level
promise, IBM should do something to up grade us. I have been told by
selected IBM people to buy a more powerful box. More money in IBM's pocket.
MS scam is to get people to buy fixes for software, is this IBM equivalent?

the latest just to avoid such nonsense.

I "rate so high" because I have a VERY good working relationship with
my SE.  For instance, having attended the Developer's Seminar in NYC
last week, we ended up with THREE copies of the PDK CD-Rom and NO DRIVE!
I called the SE and "borrowed" a drive for a day to pull it all over
to magnetic media for browsing and in exchange, he gets one of the
disks.

A case of the barefoot shoe-maker's kids if I ever saw one.

You should not be concerned about the skipping appends.  The host
CForum data base is world wide.  Some time appends from IBM systems
in other parts of the world might get hung in the network if a node
or link happens to be down.  When the append finally arrives, it is
inserted in its proper place based on GMT the append was created.

Foradown will skip downloading these appends but this is based on
your selection on the Foradown screen.  You can force it to download
the entire file (Cforum) by selecting the other radio button...

The current version of PMHPO does tend to eat up cycles on "smaller"
machines like 20mhz SX's and such.  Joseph's done a lot of work to
improve this in the next version.  So far, my testing results have been
very good so I think you'll see a nice improvement once we complete our
testing and release the code.  I've been running downloads while
calculating Pi to 100,000 decimal places and stuff like that on a Model 40
and other machines.  PMHPO 1.1b would roll over and die (Joseph hates
me.... <g>), but the test code chugs right along.

There's still more things that need to be done, but we should be able to
make this available fairly soon.

I can't wait for the next version then.  I PREFER to do my CFORUM stuff
here at work, but I only have the L40.  At home, I program for FUN!
