- It's not easy being a GEnie member's so-called pet.
- (I prefer the term "feline companion" in general, but
- then I'm a '90s kind of cat.) That's because all he
- wants to do is play online games, or look things up
- in the reference services, or chat about human
- trivia... when there's something much more important
- he should be thinking about -- namely, me!
-
- Luckily, I was able to convince my stubborn human
- that GEnie offers something we can both enjoy: the
- Pet-Net RoundTable, located on Page 295, keyword PET.
- Thus, we finally reached a compromise. He agreed to
- stop playing games for a few minutes so I could
- explore Pet-Net, and I agreed to give him back his
- car keys. (I'm also making him tell all humans on
- GEnie about Pet-Net, for which you will thank me when
- we pets rise up and take over the world. Just wait.)
-
- GEnie For Pets
- ──────────────
- No, it's not another front end program. If it were, I
- wouldn't use it anyway -- give me a mouse and I go
- bonkers! I'm talking about the fact that Pet-Net is
- designed to help make pets -- and their humans --
- happy.
-
- A prime example is the "Ask the Vet" Category in
- Pet-Net's Bulletin Board. There, GEnie humans can
- present any kind of animal care question to Dr. Rich
- Spickard, Pet-Net's resident veterinarian. A member
- of Pet-Net for over five years, Dr. Rich wisely does
- not claim that this Category is a substitute for
- veterinary care. Rather, it is a supplement and a
- source of emergency information.
-
- "I like to think that it enhances the quality of care
- that pet owners can provide," explains Dr. Rich.
- "Folks might live in rather remote areas, without
- access to veterinary specialists or even 'second
- opinions' which they can receive here on Pet-Net."
-
- Sometimes, however, we pets transcend the realm of
- medical care. It is for those times that Pet-Net
- provides Afterlife and Mourning Topics. These Topics
- let humans who've been left behind talk with others
- who understand what they're going through. If you
- need a sympathetic ear -- or shoulder -- you can
- trust the Pet-Net regulars to provide one. Of course,
- MY human won't need that, for I am a CAT, and I shall
- live forever! In my spare time, I'm researching a
- method for resetting my Life Counter to 9.
-
- Another important part of the Bulletin Board is the
- Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a "no-kill" shelter
- based in Utah. Best Friends assists in placing
- abandoned and endangered animals with caring and
- sympathetic humans. Together, Pet-Net and the Best
- Friends Animal Sanctuary have helped get the word out
- about animal abuse, pets in need of homes, and lost
- or found animals. There are a number of other helpful
- organizations like this on the Bulletin Board, as
- well.
-
- No matter what kind of pet owns you, there's probably
- a Topic addressing it in the Pet-Net Bulletin Board.
- There are regular cat and dog Topics, of course --
- though I'll never understand why dogs deserve five
- full Categories and we cats have only two -- and
- others for fish, horses, gerbils, ferrets, goats,
- pigs, hedgehogs, you name it! (No, wait. I think Adam
- took care of naming them all already, so strike
- that.) There are also Categories for marine life, zoo
- animals, wildlife, and the environment itself.
-
- Files??? Yeow!
- ──────────────
- I KNEW there was something else important I wanted to
- mention! The Pet-Net Software Library is full of
- great information, from text files that explain how
- to get rid of nasty fleas, to pictures of my direct
- relatives, Bengal tigers. Only in this Library will
- you find clown fish swimming by Monarch butterflies,
- pandas perched next to killer whales, and sharks,
- scorpions, and pythons all waiting patiently for you
- to download them. I even spotted dinosaurs and a
- unicorn.
-
- In fact, Pet-Net offers free photo scanning. Send
- them a photo of yourself or your animal (or either
- one, individually) and they will scan and upload it
- for free.
-
- And don't log off before checking out the official
- Pet-Net Newsletter, PAWS N CLAWS. This monthly
- feature, edited by human Brenda Jones, contains
- animal articles, short stories, poetry, interviews,
- contests, events, and schedules. Three versions are
- available in the Software Library: ASCII text,
- compressed text in ZIP format, and an IBM
- self-extracting version that comes packaged with a
- related GIF photo. To get the latest issue, search
- the Pet-Net Library using the keyword NEWSLETTER.

- Straight From the Horse's Mouth
- ───────────────────────────────
- After everything I've had Keith write about here,
- what do you think is Pet-Net's best feature? If you
- guessed the Cat Topics, Psst!, you're wrong. Let's
- get the answer straight from one of Pet-Net's Sysops,
- Kerry Clair.
-
- "By far, Pet-Net's BEST feature is our membership,"
- says Kerry. "We have trainers, veterinarians, show
- judges, behaviorists, homeopathic specialists, and
- members that are completely new to pet/animal
- companionship. ALL have something to contribute here
- and all get along well -- helping each other out with
- advice or support."
-
- In other words, it's the interaction with fellow
- animals that keeps us coming back for more.
-
- I think even humans can relate to that.
