  1. In the ever-changing world of IBM-compatible
  2. computing, several predictions are guaranteed to be
  3. true every year. Here, in random order, are this
  4. writer's Safe Predictions for 1995:
  5.   
  6. 1. Regardless of your budget, the computer you
  7. really, really, really want will cost $5,000.
  8.   
  9. 2. No matter how close you come to that perfect
  10. computer in your final purchase, it will be on the
  11. way to obsolescence within months.
  12.   
  13. 3. At least one piece of buggy software will drive
  14. you absolutely crazy.
  15.   
  16. 4. Many of us will get faster modems, but they will
  17. never be quite fast enough.
  18.   
  19. 5. There will be a maintenance release to Windows 95
  20. before the end of the year.
  21.   
  22. 6. Many of us will utter the phrase, "Plug-and-Play,
  23. riiiiight!"
  24.   
  25. 7. Many of us will say, at least once, "In hindsight,
  26. I should have spent a little more for..."
  27.   
  28. 8. An equal number of us will say, at least as many
  29. times, "In hindsight, I could have spent a lot less
  30. for..."
  31.   
  32. 9. Even if Bill Gates declares Darkness(tm), the new
  33. industry standard, many of us will insist on changing
  34. our own light bulbs.
  35.

  43. Kick off the New Year by taking advantage of a great
  44. offer from Borland International. Borland has
  45. released trial versions of Sidekick and Dashboard for
  46. Windows. Both of these programs are available for
  47. downloading from Borland RoundTable Library 1 in File
  48. 5785 TRYSKW.ZIP and File 5786 TRYDB.ZIP,
  49. respectively.

  51. Sidekick for Windows is Borland's new version of the
  52. classic MS-DOS personal information manager.
  53. Dashboard is the popular, award-winning program
  54. launcher and alternative Windows shell that was
  55. formerly published by Hewlett-Packard.
  56.   
  57. These programs have all the standard features -- they
  58. are 30-day trial versions you can convert to bonafide
  59. commercial software by calling Borland's order line
  60. to purchase them. You are then given a registration
  61. code to remove the 30-day limitation. This is the
  62. perfect way try before you buy!
  63.   
  64. After trying Sidekick for Windows, Writer and GEnie
  65. member Barbara Paul says, "It's a program I've
  66. quickly become addicted to using. I don't know how I
  67. got along without it!"

  80. WordExpress 1.0 from MicroVision Development, Inc. is
  81. a powerful shareware word processor for Windows. With
  82. features including WYSIWYG editing, style sheets,
  83. embedded tables and pictures, multiple columns,
  84. borders & shades, headers, footers, spell checker,
  85. thesaurus, automatic envelope printing, mail merge,
  86. and even search and replace, WordExpress might be the
  87. most complete budget-priced word processor available
  88. today. Page layout features include pictures, tables,
  89. drawing tools, snap to grid, definable alignment
  90. guides, clipping and cropping, even rotatable text
  91. and picture frames. Try this outstanding word
  92. processor. It's in File 3410 WXPRS10.ZIP.

  94. For simpler text editing, take a look at Text Manager
  95. 2.1, a beautiful text editor for Windows, featuring
  96. multiple windows and a handy button bar. It's fun to
  97. use, and makes a great substitute for the anemic
  98. Windows Notepad. This fully functional shareware
  99. release is File 3390 TEXTMGR.ZIP.

  101. Also in the Windows RoundTable Library, Animouse 4.0
  102. (File 3379 ANIMOUS4.ZIP) animates Windows mouse
  103. cursors with a selection of artistically creative and
  104. amusing designs. It includes jumbo cursors that are
  105. easier to see on dim portable screens, or on hi-res
  106. displays that miniaturize standard cursors. Animouse
  107. 4.0 is a great enhancement for presentations, or just
  108. for adding a personal touch to your Windows
  109. workspace. This version also features new tropical
  110. fish, animation speed and anti-flicker controls.

  117. Is 1995 the year you're going to switch operating
  118. platforms? Download the demonstration version of
  119. IBM's OS/2 Warp from GEnie's OS/2 RoundTable. File

  121. when decompressed and will give you a terrific
  122. preview of the power and features of this latest OS/2
  123. release.

  127. your desktop. File 3316 HTMLWIZ.ZIP is the first
  128. release of HTML Wizard. This Presentation Manager
  129. Editor allows you to easily create HTML (HyperText
  130. Markup Language) documents. Using HTML, you can
  131. create Internet World Wide Web pages and
  132. presentations using IBM's WebExplorer application.

  134. A powerful DOpus-inspired file manager for OS/2
  135. Presentation Manager, iLogic Software's DirMaster
  136. v2.10 is fully HPFS aware, with two directory
  137. windows, more than 30 internal functions, plus
  138. user-configurable options, archiver support,
  139. ZipStream support and more. You'll find it in File
  140. 3328 ILGDM210.ZIP.

  142. Another "must have" utility is BOOTOS2 version 6
  143. (upgraded for Warp v3.0) which allows the creation of
  144. bootable disks and maintenance partitions. And
  145. finally, culinary enthusiasts will want to check out
  146. File 3318 KA2_12.ZIP, the 1.2 release of Kitchen
  147. Assistant, a Presentation Manager recipe manager that
  148. can import recipes from the popular DOS MealMaster
  149. program.

  156. Start the new year off right by taking inventory of
  157. your PC with SysChk v2.40, the System Info Checker.

  161. show Bus Type, CPU, IRQs and BIOS; Mouse Info, Port

  169. File 36893 SCLMOM50.ZIP, School-Mom Plus v5.0, is a
  170. comprehensive educational program for children of all
  171. ages. It has multiple learning levels for music,
  172. math, English, spelling, alphabet, time, and art, and
  173. an examination-generator with 50 exams provided.
  174. Colorful, educational, easy to use and fun,
  175. School-Mom Plus won a "Best of 1994" award for
  176. educational shareware.

  178. File 36881 DDFILE70.ZIP contains a powerful and
  179. flexible database manager for the professional and
  180. beginner alike. Written especially for mailing list
  181. applications, ddFile can be used to manage any dBase
  182. III file for just about any purpose. It's shareware
  183. from Doctor Data Software.

  185. These are just a few examples that illustrate the
  186. variety of shareware and other programs available in

  192. Need a leg-up climbing onto the multimedia bandwagon?

  195. Just released is NeoPaint version 3.0a, available in

  205. NeoSoft programs make good use of GEM fonts, and two
  206. groups of them are available for downloading in Files

  210. For presentation art, take a look at the catalog
  211. files containing thumb-nail views of many of the
  212. images and background screens available in the
  213. Multimedia RoundTable Library. Thunmb-nails, like
  214. Files 167 CATART1.GIF, 168 CARART2.GIF, 217
  215. CATART3.GIF, 1319 CAT1PLAC.GIF and 1320 CAT2PLAC.GIF,
  216. let you select only those full-sized GIFs you want to
  217. download in all their glory. Once you've made your
  218. selection, grab File 1302 GDS310A.ZIP to convert
  219. those GIFs to the format you need, including BMP,
  220. LBM, PCX, RIX, TGA, TIF, and JPG. GDS comes highly
  221. recommended and is a terrific graphics utility to
  222. have in your arsenal.

  224. Windows business presentation makers should check out
  225. File 1446 SBP2.ZIP. Show Business Pro is new,
  226. fully-functional shareware from Techno Marketing that
  227. includes support for video, audio, animation and
  228. text, all incorporated in your presentations using a
  229. slick point-and-click interface. It has an MCI
  230. analyzer, automated script assembly, and is fast and
  231. easy to use.

  233. The Multimedia RoundTable has a new Knowledge Base,
  234. the Multimedia Product Center, available from their
  235. main menu or by moving directly to Page 2001 by
  236. typing the keyword MPC.

  238. The Multimedia Product Center is an extensive
  239. collection of articles and press releases containing
  240. specifications and prices on hardware and software
  241. for IBM-compatible, Macintosh and Amiga, with an
  242. emphasis on multimedia (which encompasses a vast
  243. range of products), desktop video, and virtual
  244. reality (VR). It contains market trends and industry
  245. trade show information as well.

  247. Most, but not all, of those stories appeared in
  248. Cyberspace Report Weekly, which is published each
  249. Friday on the Multimedia RoundTable. Reading "CyPort"
  250. every week is a great way to stay abreast of new
  251. product releases and the computing industry in
  252. general. If you miss an issue, you can download that
  253. month's CyPort compilation file from the Multimedia
  254. Library the following month.

  256. However, when you need information on a specific
  257. company, product, or genre of products, searching the
  258. Multimedia Product Center is far more efficient than
  259. looking through back issues of Cyberspace Report
  260. Weekly. Full instructions and tips for quickly
  261. finding what you're looking for are provided.

  268. Finally, if you use Mustang Software's Qmodem Pro for

  272. programs. Qmodem Pro for Windows users should

  276. includes the patch for OLX v1.52 to 1.53 as well, but
  277. only works on the OLX that came with QmodemPro.
