- Spotlight: Virtual Golf Tournament
- by Duncan Koerber
-
- This is the story of how GEnie's Sports RoundTable Team Won the virtual Jack
- Nicklaus Signature Edition Golf Ryder Cup Tournament!
-
- Not long ago, a dozen members of GEnie's Jack Nicklaus Signature Edition
- Golf Team travelled virtually to Sutton, Coldfield, England, to participate
- in the Ryder Cup Golf Tournament. Twelve players each from GEnie,
- CompuServe, Prodigy, America Online (AOL), and the National Videotex Network
- (NVN) gathered for a virtual week of competition on the famous Belfry Club
- course, site of the real-world Ryder Cup challenge.
-
- Like The Real Thing
-
- "They deemed their real golfing talents not quite swift enough to tackle the
- physical course," observed Glen Johnson, GEnie's Sports RoundTable manager,
- "so they did the next best thing; they played the tournament using the
- computer game Jack Nicklaus' Signature Edition Golf (JNSE)." It should be
- noted that JNSE golf plays just like the real thing, with bunkers, greens
- and roughs, providing ample challenge and real-life misery for each and
- every golfer. The most popular feature of the program (without which the
- tournament could not have taken place) is the course design module, which
- allows for construction of real as well as fictitious courses. Our
- inter-service tournament elected to use a design of the Belfry Club course
- done by Jim Wildenhaus and Stan Setlick.
-
- That course turned out to be a real challenge for everyone in the tournament
- who wasn't familiar with it, or accustomed to British weather conditions.
- Nevertheless, the GEnie Team, with a favorable draw against America Online,
- thoroughly trounced them 5-1 on the first day of play!
-
- Eagles and Birdies
-
- Highlights included a score of 62 (10 under par) by GEnie's Steve Gazis,
- with a 66 (6 under par) turned in by Sam Appleton. On the second day, GEnie
- dominated play with a 6-0 win over America Online, noting that their team
- looked worn down by the end of the day.
-
- Further trouncing by the GEnie Team the next day was accomplished with some
- unbelievable scores! Frank Pazda hit a 66, Lon Whitehead a 64, Ron Enfield a
- 64, and Sam Appleton a 62 -- which included a hole-in-one on the par three
- 12th hole, and a 27 on the back nine! Steve Gazis, who shot a 27 on the
- front nine, came in at 61, Jason Brown a 65, Darin Brown a 64, and Lane
- Charnes contributed a nice round 63. To illustrate just how well the GEnie
- Team played, by comparison, only three players from America Onlin e scored
- below 70 on the second day.
-
- The Thrill of Victory
-
- The third round arrived with GEnie down by half a point to NVN. Round three
- conditions were atrocious, making the golfing hard on everyone. But the
- GEnie Team perservered, happily cursing their way through all eighteen
- holes. They won 9.5 to 2.5 over AOL, while NVN went 8.5 versus 3.5 from
- CompuServe, putting GEnie in front by half a point, which was enough to win
- the competition! Way to go, GEnie Team!
-
- Real vs. Virtual Rewards
-
- Editor's Note: The Ryder Cup was a virtual trophy on this occasion, of
- course, but members of the Sports RoundTable's GEnie Team were each awarded
- a very real $20 Gift of Time from GEnie for their outstanding sportsmanship.
- If you know of GEnie members who have stories you think others would find
- interesting, send a brief description of what they did and who they are to
- LIVEWIRE by GE Mail. If we Spotlight them in LiveWire, you'll enjoy a token
- of GEnie's appreciation, too.
