- I'm thrilled to report that your enthusiastic comments to LiveWire and GEnie
- Client Services have deemed the Multimedia LiveWire issues an overwhelming
- success! Since a number of you have asked how these presentations are done, I
- thought I'd share the story of our processes, products and people with you
- here.
-
- The Multimedia LiveWire Team includes seven of us now: three artistic-types
- responsible for design and implementation of the final multimedia versions,
- that being Tom Moran for IBM-compatible, Jim Flanagan for Macintosh, and Deb
- Christensen with assistance from Zak Jarvis for Amiga. The very talented
- Bruce Robison does the vast majority of our art and animations, while Howard
- Wooten (who joined us just this issue) keeps us in step as Maestro.
- LiveWire's Assistant Editor, Jay Kee, rounds out the team with a little help
- from yours truly. Since this project was my idea, they make me do file
- conversions and nag them about deadlines. ;-)
-
- The kicker, however, is that we all live and work thousands of miles apart --
- and most of us have never even met! Two of us, Tom and Howard, hail from
- Arizona, while Deb's in California, and I'm next door in New Mexico. Jim
- chimes in from Florida, Bruce contributes from Missouri, and Jay participates
- from up north in Alberta, Canada, giving the project an international flavor.
-
- How -- since we've never met -- do we manage to produce three full-blown
- multimedia presentations for as many platforms every month, delivering around
- 15,000 words enhanced with art, animation, and music? It's easy -- we do it
- through the magic of GEnie!

- ║ Multimedia for Business ║
- ╚═════════════════════════╝
-
- As I see it, Multimedia LiveWire is a perfect example of business taking
- advantage of the lastest technology, and putting that technology -- in this
- case, commercial multimedia presentation programs -- to work in a way that's
- just right -- both for them and their customers. And I'm not the only one who
- thinks this; many of you have commented that you prefer Multimedia LiveWire
- to the printed magazine, and you all like it better than the text-based
- issues that are also available online.
-
- But I digress. Here's how we do it: Working with GEnie management, I organize
- the editorial content for each issue, assigning the articles to LiveWire's
- talented pool of writers and columnists. Once that's going, the Multimedia
- Team puts its collective head together and figures out art suitable for that
- issue's theme. Bruce then designs the art and animations including the
- contents page, the text frame pages with button controls, and the colorful
- little images you see with the articles. While he's doing that, Howard makes
- beautiful music in a variety of file formats, and Kent Fillmore (of the
- Macintosh and PowerPC RoundTables) does the digitized voice samples you've
- heard in several issues, including this one.
-
- We all communicate by GE Mail and share files in a special area on the
- Multimedia RoundTable, so as soon as the parts start coming together and the
- articles are ready, LiveWire's Multimedia authors begin assembling their
- presentations using readily available commercial software: PC West's
- SuperShow IV for IBM, Aldus' SuperCard for Macintosh, and INOVAtronic's CanDo
- for Amiga. Besides these authoring programs, we use a variety of commercial
- and shareware products to make, tweak, and groom the various parts. And let
- me tell you something: Even when you have all the parts, assembling a major
- multimedia presentation is no minor undertaking, particularly part-time in a
- week or so!
-
- In case you're interested in doing multimedia presentations yourself, here
- are most of the products we use to make Multimedia LiveWire:
