  4. Welcome to the second update to CygnusEd Professional Release 4. This document
  5. describes  which  changes were made to CygnusEd and its associated files since
  6. Version 4.2 of the editor was published in October 1997:

  16. This distribution contains patches for the following files:

  18.    - CygnusEd text editor (both the plain 68k and the 020+ version)
  19.    - MetaMac macro editor
  20.    - RecoverCEDFiles crash recovery utility
  21.  
  22. In addition to this, new versions of the following files are provided:

  24.    - Online help (CygnusEd_Manual.guide)
  25.    - German language support files (drawer "Catalogs/deutsch")
  26.    - Localization files (see drawer "Localization")

  29. - 2. Updating ----------------------------------------------------------------

  31. The   update   program   requires  that  you  insert  the  original  "CygnusEd
  32. Professional Release 4" CD into your CD-ROM drive. The CD icon must be visible
  33. in  the Workbench window. The update procedure itself looks very much like the
  34. CygnusEd  installation process, but it cannot completely replace it. Thus, you
  35. must have CygnusEd installed before you can update it.

  38. - 3. Changes -----------------------------------------------------------------
  39. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  40. The  following  section  lists  major  changes in the single updated programs.
  41. Minor technical details have been omitted.
  42.  
  43. CygnusEd_Professional 4.15 (21.4.98)
  44.  
  45. - When using topaz 80 as the text display font, CygnusEd no longer
  46.   switches to use this font as the overall screen font. I had left
  47.   testing code in the 4.14 update which had that effect.
  48.  
  49. - Text scrolling is now a tad smoother when using a text scrolling
  50.   step of 1/8 line.
  51.  
  52. - When building fully qualified path names for files and drawers,
  53.   CygnusEd no longer uses the volume name but tries to substitute
  54.   it with the corresponding device name. Since volume names are
  55.   not unique, this lessens the chance of accidentally storing a
  56.   file on the wrong device [Angela Schmidt].
  57.  
  58. - The default protection bits used for saving files no longer
  59.   include group/other read/write/delete permission.
  60.  
  61. - When saving files, the archive protection bit is no longer
  62.   preserved [Stefan Huelswitt].
  63.  
  64. - I got bitten by a Kickstart 2.04 bug; as it turns out,
  65.   graphics.library/TextFit() can leave the te_Height entry
  66.   of the TextExtend structure passed in initialized to 0.
  67.   This was screwing up some RectFill() operations newly
  68.   introduced in V4.14, leading to a major crash when the
  69.   CygnusEd window was opened.
  70.  
  71. - Setting up the search requester could throw Enforcer hits
  72.   under Kickstart 2.04. Fixed.
  73.  
  74. - When defining a macro, the screen title to this effect would
  75.   go away and return to the default title when changing views.
  76.   This is clearly not what should happen and a side-effect of
  77.   the ARexx screen title setting code. Fixed [Christian Schreiber].
  78.  
  79. - Fixed the ARexx interface command "OW" so that it works better with
  80.   the SAS/C SCMSG default options. Previously, it would get the
  81.   file name wrong since it had the "\n" attached.
  82.  
  83. - Reintroduced the gap between the screen title and the first view
  84.   for Kickstart 2.04.
  85.  
  86. - Implemented a smarter scheme for finding the help text file.
  87.   It can now reside in "HELP:<language>" or "PROGDIR:HELP/<language>",
  88.   and CygnusEd will still find it. The languages checked for come
  89.   from the locale preferences list of preferred languages, but
  90.   CygnusEd will always fall back to "english" if no locale settings
  91.   are provided [Martin Berndt].

  94. CygnusEd_Professional 4.14 (16.03.98)
  95.  
  96. - It  is now much more difficult for CygnusEd to overwrite its own line buffer
  97.   and lose track of the cursor position [Angela Schmidt].
  98.  
  99. - The  "Tabs  visible?",  "Spaces  visible?"  and  "EOLs visible?" options now
  100.   finally work with fonts other than topaz/8. If enabled, tabulator characters
  101.   will  be  displayed  as '°', spaces as '·' and EOLs as '¶'.
  102.  
  103. - The  code  to  determine whether a character was a word delimiter is using a
  104.   table  to  match the relevant characters. But as it turned out, the code was
  105.   reinitializing  this  table  for  every invocation (a "static" qualifier was
  106.   missing).
  107.  
  108. - Discovered  that I had accidentally deleted the "Set clipboard unit..." menu
  109.   item in the V4.2 release. Now it's back again.
  110.  
  111. - "Use  Workbench  colours"  now  copies  the current Workbench screen palette
  112.   rather than reopening the CygnusEd screen to accomplish this trick.
  113.  
  114. - Changed the way mouse dragging works; hold down any [Shift] key and drag the
  115.   mouse  to  start marking a text block. The text cursor no longer immediately
  116.   follows  the mouse, the cursor position now gets updated in the same fashion
  117.   as it did in the pre-4.x versions.
  118.  
  119. - Shifting  text  in/out  now  works again as it should. The code that checked
  120.   whether  shifting  out  a  block makes sense did not take all EOL characters
  121.   into account.
  122.  
  123. - The  search  option  "Begin  at  top" did not work since the cursor position
  124.   would  be  moved  to the wrong extreme of the file. The "Wrap around" option
  125.   did not work either due to the same bug [Kaikumaa Timo and Sascha Glade].
  126.  
  127. - If  the  "Wrap  around"  search  option  is enabled, CygnusEd will no longer
  128.   display  the  "search  failed"  requester  before causing the search to wrap
  129.   around again.
  130.  
  131. - CygnusEd now shows its public screen name in the screen title bar (if it has
  132.   a  public  screen  open;  if  not, only the name and program version will be
  133.   seen).
  134.  
  135. - The  auto-save  interval  menu label text could cut off the remainder of the
  136.   line if the number of minutes was less than ten. Fixed.
  137.  
  138. - In  the  text  search  requester,  the  "Expand escape codes" option did not
  139.   expand  hex  and octal numbers properly.
  140.  
  141. - Added  a  new  ARexx  command "rx" which works just like the "Send DOS/ARexx
  142.   command..." menu command but can be used more easily.
  143.  
  144. - When  changing  the  protection  bits  of  a file saved to disk, CygnusEd no
  145.   longer discards the owner/group/other file attributes.
  146.  
  147. - ":tabsize" is now a synonym for ":ts" and ":tabstop".
  148.  
  149. - CygnusEd  now  considers  a  file  "not  editable"  if  it is protected from
  150.   deletion.
  151.  
  152. - The  print  requester now activates the "left margin" text entry field [Wolf
  153.   Faust].
  154.  
  155. - Text  requesters  now  have proper button shortcuts, just like all the other
  156.   requesters [Wolf Faust].
  157.  
  158. - Text,  number  and print requesters can now be controlled via menu shortcuts
  159.   even while the string/integer gadgets are active [Angela Schmidt].
  160.  
  161. - The AmigaGuide support now finally works asynchronously.
  162.  
  163. - While  it  is  printing,  CygnusEd now shows a progress requester which even
  164.   allows  you  to  stop  the  printing process altogether. This is a non-modal
  165.   requester,  i.e.  CygnusEd will still go on printing in the background while
  166.   the requester is open.

  168. - Modal  requesters  which  ask  for  confirmation  of a destructive action no
  169.   longer  feature  "default  buttons"  (hitting  [Return] will not confirm the
  170.   requesters) [Wolf Faust].
  171.  
  172. - Changed the keyboard shortcut for "Cancel" back to "C" [Wolf Faust].
  173.  
  174. - When  changing  the  screen  title  from  an  SCMSG  script to show an error
  175.   message, CygnusEd now prepends the message with "SAS/C: " and keeps track of
  176.   whether  the  file  the  message was attached to remains in the active view.
  177.   When  the  file  changes,  the screen title will revert to the default. That
  178.   way,  you  can always be sure that the error message refers to the currently
  179.   active view's file.
  180.  
  181. - The  code  to centre a line could choke on lines larger than 500 characters.
  182.   Uncommon, but not impossible. It now allocates its line memory dynamically.
  183.  
  184. - Rewrote the routine that creates temporary files for making "safe saves". It
  185.   no  longer  uses  a  single, constant name but adapts its name as necessary.
  186.   This  makes  it  less  likely  that  two save attempts by different CygnusEd
  187.   processes will clash.
  188.  
  189. - When  showing  page  numbers  in the status line, CygnusEd will now uses the
  190.   actual  Preferences  printer  page  length  as  a  reference  rather  than a
  191.   hard-coded page size of 66 lines.
  192.  
  193. - The  routine to set the right border asks whether you want to enter a larger
  194.   number  manually  if  you  ended  up  picking  the  rightmost visible border
  195.   position. That code had been commented out, I wonder why [Wolf Faust].

  198. RecoverCEDFiles 4.2 (17.12.97)
  199.  
  200. - Retired all assembly language support code.
  201.

  203. MetaMac 4.5 (14.03.98)
  204.  
  205. - The  scroller  arrows  now  produce  predictable  results  when  pressed and
  206.   released.  Previously, the code would keep on scrolling even after releasing
  207.   the buttons.

  209. - Aligned the two input windows.
  210.  
  211. - Long invocation macros now print properly. Previously, the code to print the
  212.   macro  name would end in an infinite loop. Even with that bug fixed, the old
  213.   code  would  not  have  printed  the  entire  macro tree properly [Christian
  214.   Schreiber].
  215.  
  216. - Modal  requesters  which  ask  for  confirmation  of a destructive action no
