Pick-Up-Words
Pick-Up-Words is a vocabulary building game in which the player
links clusters of synonyms. Such clustering is not only an effective
mnemonic device but also expands the player's working vocabulary by
teaching each word's diverse meanings.
To play Pick-up Words, match words jumbled in the center of the
screen with the keywords that appear in the upper left-hand corner.
To attempt a match, use either the arrow keys or the mouse to
move the cursor over the word that you believe is a synonym for the key
word and either click the mouse or press enter. Your match will be
successful if the selected word is a synonym for the keyword and if
the selected word is on the top of the jumble. Your score will increase
or decrease by one point. You can cycle through the keywords by pressing
the space bar.
The jumble of words has three layers; ordered from top to bottom,
they are colored green, red, and blue. A word can only
successfully be selected if it is completely uncovered by higher
level words. For instance, a blue-level word cannot be selected
if it is crossed by either a red or green level word.
Each word in the jumble matches only one of the keywords.
So, even though other words might in some way relate to the
keyword, you are looking for the best match. Word clusters are
based on Roget's II The New Thesaurus (c.1980).
Pick-Up-Words is a shareware program. If you would like to
continue playing it, send $15.00 to the following address:
