  5.          PC-FASTYPE - Quick HELP Facility -- General Information
  6.  
  7.                           Welcome to PC-FASTYPE
  8.  
  9.      PC-FASTYPE is a computer-based typing instruction program designed
  10. for intermediate and advanced PC typists who want to improve their
  11. accuracy and speed on the IBM family of microcomputers and PC compatibles
  12. running the MS-DOS Operating System.
  13.  
  14.      PC-FASTYPE is an excellent vehicle for beginning typists who want to
  15. learn to touch-type on various MS-DOS based microcomputers.  It is
  16. designed for use by typists either in a private at-home environment or
  17. during spare time at the office.  And PC-FASTYPE is ideal for use as a
  18. tool in the classroom when teaching PC typing/keyboarding skills.  No
  19. scores or records are retained for auditing your progress; you'll know if
  20. you're getting better.  Timings, WPM, percent of accuracy, and number of
  21. errors are displayed at the end of each drill or exercise.  Additionally,
  22. the highest WPM obtained during the current typing session is maintained.

  26.      PC-FASTYPE has the capability to drill you on all shifted special
  27. characters and upper-case symbols plus all CAPITAL Letters; you will need
  28. to use the Shift key to successfully type any of these characters.  You'll
  29. also learn how to use the ENTER and BACKSPACE Keys; their use is required
  30. for exercises selected from the Advanced Exercises Menu.

  32.      All drills, exercises, and features are selectable with the cursor
  33. bar or function keys. This Quick HELP Facility is available with every
  34. Menu; you can use it for quick reference while learning how to type with
  35. PC-FASTYPE.

  37.      PC-FASTYPE is very flexible for the beginning typist.  By using the
  38. cursor bar or function keys, the beginner can select many combinations of
  39. drill sequences from the Beginners Menu.  Additionally, one or more typing
  40. 'helpers' can be set from the Keyboard Helpers Menu.  The combinations are
  41. many; you can adjust your drills to boost your typing skills in those
  42. areas you may feel are weak (i.e. Numbers, CAPITALS, special symbols,
  43. etc.), and you can improve your speed and accuracy.  With the 'Choose Your
  44. Own' option in the Beginner Drills Menu, you even select a specific row of
  45. keys or all of the keys for specific fingers to practice on.

  48.                          The MAIN MENU Selections
  49.  
  50.      The MAIN MENU of PC-FASTYPE is used to help you access the other
  51. primary menus in the program.  There are five primary menus from which you
  52. can choose warm-up drills, typing exercises, keyboard helpers, and
  53. features; all controlled by the cursor bar on the menu or by the function
  54. keys on your keyboard.  There are also several Sub-menus and dialog boxes
  55. to help you 'fine tune' your drill and exercise selections.

  58.      When any of PC-FASTYPE's menus are displayed, you can get to the
  59. Quick HELP Facility by moving the cursor bar to the HELP line in the menu
  60. and pressing the ENTER key, or by simply pressing the F1 Function key.
  61. When you select an item from the menu, a check mark will appear to the
  62. left of it indicating you made a selection by pressing the ENTER key or
  63. the Function Key for that item.  If you are selecting drills or exercises,
  64. this action may reset some of your previous selections even if you change
  65. your mind.  You're here because you probably selected the Quick HELP
  66. Facility while PC-FASTYPE's MAIN MENU was displayed.

  70. MAIN MENU SKILL LEVEL Selections:
  71.                Beginner SKILL;      0-15 WPM
  72.                Intermediate SKILL; 15-45 WPM
  73.                Advanced SKILL;       +45 WPM
  74.  
  75.      When you start up PC-FASTYPE, the skill selection will be set at the
  76. Beginner Level.  The prompting rhythm for typing will be rather slow, and
  77. the drill count - the number of randomly selected characters for you to
  78. type is set at 20. This skill level stays in effect for all drills and
  79. exercises until you change it by selecting a different skill level.
  80. PC-FASTYPE's Helpers Menu will let you change the count too.
  81.  
  82.      For the Intermediate Skill selection, the prompting rhythm will be a
  83. bit faster, but nice and easy for the intermediate typist. The number of
  84. characters for you to type is set at the count of 40.
  85.  
  86.      The prompting rhythm for the Advanced Skill selection is for speed
  87. demons. You may want to turn off the sound (QUIET Mode - Helpers' Menu) as
  88. things get pretty noisy if you can't sustain the speed. The number of
  89. characters for you to type is set at the count of 60.
