Getting PktWin Started
If you do not have a registered version: Click on the Cancel button in the Registration dialogue box to remove it without registering. Click on the OK button if you wish to enter your registration number.
If you have a registered version: The Wait notification box will disappear after a short time.
PktWin commands
To Change the Serial Port Settings: Click on the Options menu, then click on the Communications selection to bring up the Communications dialogue box. These parameters can also be modified by using the PKTWIN.INI directly. NOTE this applies to the copy of PKTWIN.INI in the Windows directory only.
To close PktWin: Click on the File menu, then click on the Exit selection.
To access the Help file: Either by selecting one of the help options from the Help menu, or press F1.
Saving the current settings
The current settings will be automatically saved to the PKTWIN.INI file, in the Windows directory, when PktWin is exited.
PKTWIN.INI Options
There are several options which may be set within the PKTWIN.INI file. These options and their usage are outlined below.
[Comms] The serial communications options.
Port= should be set to the serial port that is connected to the TNC, eg. 1 = COM1:.
Baud= is the speed (Baud rate) that the TNC is talking to the computer at one of: 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600.
AWLen= either 7 or 8, for the number of bits per character.
Parity= this should be set to the parity type being used by the TNC.
Flow= the type of flow control used between the Computer and the TNC.
[Window] The buffer and window options.
RXBuffer Size= should be set to the size, in kilobytes, of the Receive buffer. Maximum of 1024K, minimum of 1K.
TXBuffer Size= should be set to the size, in kilobytes, of the Receive buffer. Maximum of 1024K, minimum of 1K.
Word wrap= the number of characters, after which typing a space will perform a new line.
RXCRLF= set to 0 if the TNC is sending Carriage return and Line feed, set to 1 if the TNC is sending Carriage return only.
TXCRLF= set to 0 if the TNC requires only a Carriage return, set to 1 if the TNC requires Carriage return and Line feed.
Line Width= the maximum number of characters for a line, either 80 or 120.
[Text] The text options
Receive Text Colour= sets the colour for text received from the TNC.
Transmit Text Colour= sets the colour for text send to the TNC.
[Font] The font options.
Tab Size= set the number of characters for a tab.
Font= the font used by the program.
[Size] The size and position of the program on the screen.
Left= the number of pixels from the left hand side of the screen.
Right= the window width in pixels.
Top= the number of pixels from the top of the screen.
Bottom= the window height in pixels.
Maximised= set to 0 for normal, 1 for maximised.
[Initialisation] The files if any containing startup and shutdown instructions to the TNC.
Use Start File= set to 0 for no initialisation, 1 to send initialisation commands.
Use Quit File= set to 0 for no shut down, 1 to send shut down commands.
Start File= the file and path name of the file containing the initialisation commands.
Quit File= the file and path name of the file containing the shut down commands.
*** When you exit from PktWin the current settings will be saved to the INI file.
Trouble Shooting.
If on starting PktWin, a message appears complaining about 'Serial Port Hardware not installed' then the Communications dialogue box will appear for you to directly modify the settings. Alternatively you may wish to set the PKTWIN.INI file directly to reflect the serial port your TNC is using. If your TNC is connected to COM2:, then:
Copy the file PKTWIN.INI to the \WINDOWS directory.
Using notepad, edit the line Port=1 to read Port=2.
