I have recently purchased a YAESU FT-530 HT. It is first class
all the way. I have been asked many questions about my new rig, and
thought I might many questions in the form of an INFO FILE!
The FT-530 is programmable in just about any way you can imagine.
Of course it does all of the normal synthesized HT functions plus it
has built in CTCSS and DTMF functions. The HT will notify you with an
alarm when your CTCSS or tone sequence is received. You can even
change the sound and length of the alarm!
The built in clock has elapsed time, auto on or off at a preset time
auto off after a preset elapsed time, and can even be used as an alarm
clock.
Frequency can be entered directly with the keyboard or selected from
two VFOs or from 42 memory channels per band. The memory channels can be
scanned one band at a time, both bands at the same time, or both bands in
sequence. Any channel can be "skipped" during scan, but is accessible
with the dial or arrow keys. It will also scan a range between two
programmable limits.
Each programmed channel will have repeater split, power and CTCSS or
DTMF squelch information included.
Two frequencies in the same band can be monitored simultaneously.
The built in duplexer will allow you to receive on one band while
transmitting on the other band. Setting it up as a cross band repeater
is easy.
The Speaker Mic with the built in display is great for using the rig
as a mobile. The mike is about the same size as other speaker mics and
light weight. The audio is great. The display is the active band only,
and has the most needed function keys. One key is programmable with band
select the default.
Other keys duplicate the U/D arrows, scan start, memory select, vfo
select, light, and power switch. Three switches on the back will turn on
the light, turn the speaker on or off and a lock switch. An external
speaker jack is located on the mic plug.
The batteries are not compatible with the FT-470. A power jack allows
5 Watt mobile operation and will charge the battery.
I have made the modification to open up the receiver to 110-180 Mhz
and 300-500 Mhz. It works!! You will need a magnifying glass and a
solder sucker. After making this mod, Turn on the power while holding
the UP and DN arrow keys. THIS ERASES ALL MEMORY!!!!! I also noticed
the automatic repeater split does not work correctly. Turn the repeater
split to manual, and this will not be problem. The extended range is
worth the extra effort.
Yaesu FT-530
Expanded Receive only 110-180, 300-500 MHZ (Transmit Freq. Unchanged)
- Remove Antenna and Battery.
- Remove four screws on bottom holding battery track.
- Remove the four (black) screws holding rear case.
- Slowly....open the front cover from transceiver, lay both halves on table.
- Note positioning of white paper insulator in right half of radio and lift out
(don't throw away).
- Carefully locate JUMPER PADS 13 & 15, and REMOVE SOLDER.
- Re-install white paper insulator, make sure the ground tab slides through
the paper insulator.
- Close radio back up (Careful not to pinch the ribbon cable near lithium
battery when closing case halves).
- Re-install the four (black) screws holding rear case.
- Re-install four (small silver) screws on bottom holding battery track to radio
body.
- Attach Antenna and Battery.
- TURN OFF RADIO...
PRESS AND HOLD BOTH ARROW KEYS, TURN ON THE RADIO. THIS ERASES MEMORIES!!
- Modification complete !
I have performed this modification and it does work!
