Marymac is a large, authorized Tandy dealer in Texas with an 800 number. They
discount Tandy stuff heavily. They told me that things bought from them may be
taken to regular RS stores nationwide for service. I've never bought from
them, but may some time in the future. I bought my Pro43 locally last week
because I wanted my new scanner as fast as possible.

Hi all!
Just bought a scanner (semi-impulse buy) last week and after signing on here
heard about the Pro-43 so started phoning local "Shacks". I was steered to the
Granada Hills store wher I found three in stock (now 2!).
If you're interested:

I spoke with Jack Rolls and traded up from the Pro-35 unit I'd just bought.
Really like the size and added bands available with the 43. /exit

Ok, here's some info on the D1-D5 in the PRO-43.
D1- no obvious change when removed.
D2 This disables the 30-50MHZ range for European models I assume. D3 This
enables the 50-90MHZ range also for the European Models. D4 This one enables
all the 800MHZ range. Does the "C" in 30KHZ. Cool!!! D5 Another one without
an obvious change.
Hope this helps. I don't have time to experiment with the D1 and D5 diodes and
wish someone else can figure it out or get some inside info. The other scanner
makers now have a lot of work to catch up, especially with the sensitivity and
"C" scanning ability. I've personally always liked the logic of the
programming and such of the RS models and I'm glad happy to sell my AR1000
now.

Robert, sounds like D3 restores 66-88MHz, the European midband. This has been
possible before, but needs RF realignment. Doesn't sound like it's worth the
effort just to get a few TV-Low channels with distorted audio.

Hey, I beat all of you. <G> I now have the schematic showing the infamous
diode. I don't know if it's easy or difficult to get to, but an engineer
friend of mine is going to do the mod this week. I'm not going to fool around
with killing the keypad tone or anything else, since I don't want to kill the
warranty. (Evidently, if you don't screw up the scanner when snipping the
diode, RS looks the other way. I don't want to push my luck with other mods.
<g>)
Since only 2 others have the scanner so far, I'd guess that by the time the
others on here have it (late this week or early next) I'll know exactly where
the tiny component is and how difficult it is to get to. Standby!

Fm: Jeff Goldman 76437,1146
To: All
A friend of mine, an engineer, was able to do the mod in 15-20 min. It entails
removing a surface mount diode, D4, which is located on the board directly
behind the keyboard. The scanner must be disassembled, including desoldering a
shield and the antenna connection. My friend kept saying that an amateur
should NOT attempt this. This is incredibly delicate work and the diode is not
a normal-sized diode, but a tiny surface mount one (the tiniest thing you
could ever have on your fingertip).
Also, for those of you trying to get an excellent quality case for the Pro43,
the correct model is the "S" for this compact scanner. The case is made of
neoprene and vinyl and is black. Price is $19.95 (includes shipping) and is
available from 1-800-72-POUCH. I talked with Mr Richardson today to give him
the dimensions of the scanner (roughly 5 3/4 x 2 1/4 x 1 1/2") and he said
this it THE size for the Pro43. (My HTX-202 2m HT uses the larger "G" size. He
makes 17 different sizes.) It comes with a piece of shock-absorbant foam in
the bottom of the case.
Good luck everyone! -Jeff

Guess that means you're not buying the AR1000 Manual either. :-(
Steve, I love love love the HTX-202. It has loads of bells and whistles and
scans the fastest of ALL Amateur HT's (25cps). It costs only $259 and the 5yr
full warranty is only $39. Marymac probably charges even less for the HT. What
is unique about it, Steve, is that it doesn't have a wideband receiver on
purpose. This translates into a cleaner, less intermod-prone receiver than
other HT's.
If you're looking for a dual mode HT -all the rage now- I've been told that
the most exciting are the new Standard and the upcoming Yaesu FT-530. We'll
see.
I'm curious why you didn't buy the AR1500?!!! You were that close to it. Price
here in Oct will be $500 plus shipping, so your deal would have been excellent
(and you could have been the guinea pig <g>). Please go back and buy it.
Please. Howard Bornstein would like to have a copy of the manual and he
PROMISES you a free copy of his upcoming AR1500 Manual in Oct if you'd just
send him the AR1500 original one! (Right, Howard?)

Jeff,
Thanks for your views on the 2m HT's. You are truly a VHF/UHF radio
information czar. Do you get a discount from Compuserve for racking up
as much time as you must to respond so quickly to these messages?
I didn't buy the Fairmate HP2000 or AOR1500 because I was scared off by
1. Excessive birdies
2. Difficult to program
3. Not really that useful below 27MHz (SW) or above 960MHz
4. The AOR 1500 takes AAA batteries
5. The advent of the Pro-43 at a reasonable price and the favorable
comments I've read about it on this forum. You don't own Tandy
stock do you, or work for RS?
6. I don't feel like spending an extra $100 to get the AOR or extra
$350+ to get the AOR in addition to the Pro-43.
I am a little disheartend to learn the Pro-43 mod takes some considerable
skill as that will add to the overall cost.
Jeff, do you have any comments about the Yupitero (whatever its called) MV7000
scanner? I saw that in Japan and wondered if I'm missing anything. Also, it
was strange that I didn't see any Uniden scanners. Do you know why?
You wouldn't believe the selection of ham HT's in Japan. Some are so small.
Anyway, I (or someone from my office) will probably be going back to Japan in
a month or two. If I see some great AOR1500 reviews
and my fairy godmother annoits me with an extra $300-400, I might buy it.

Guess we'll have to find someone else to buy the AR1500. I'm still waiting for
a review from Andrew in England.
I don't work for RS; I work for MetLife but intend to go to school for
Electronics. (Gee, surprised? <g>)
I did some comparisons between the Pro2006 (with the whip from a Pro2004) vs
the Pro43 w/dedicated 800MHz ant. Their sensitivity is virtually identical.
That means the Pro43 is as good as an AR1000 up there, but definitely hotter
than the Pro34/37 and BC200XLT. And guess what... the Pro43's stock rubber
duckie works very well on 800MHz! It isn't as good as an actual 800MHz ant,
but is still quite acceptable. Too bad it's deaf on 220MHz.
Excessive birdies in the AR1500? So you DID play with it! Did it seem much
smaller than the AR1000/HP2000? One nice feature of the AORs is the ability to
lock out birdies during Searches. I'd still take the Pro43 though. <G>
No, I don't get a discount from CIS on HamNet. <g> I spend most of my time in

Use either an RS telescoping whip or the little cellular telescoping whip from
CDP in California (also around $10). It comes with a TNC connector, so you'll
have to pick up a TNC/BNC adapter ($5) at RS. The model is CDP-ORAT and is
excellent on 220MHz and is quite good down lower a bit. The stock rubber
duckie has a null in the 220MHz area.

I played with a Pro-43 for a short while yesterday and did some side-by-side
tests against a Pro-37 and my Icom W2A. All units had stock antennas, and
the only freqs. programmed in all three were 150Mhz range public service and
470Mhz range public service. While all three performed well, it seemed that
the Pro-43 was noisier on weak signals, with the Pro-37 slightly less noisy,
and the W2A the cleanest. The store I was in has a larger two-way radio
shop behind them and all three radios showed some interference. The
interference sounded like pager sigs, or some other data type signal, and
was not a problem except on very weak signals. (wouldn't a signal strength
meter be nice?).
Have you noticed any reception problems with weaker signals on your -43?
Still undecided whether I *really need* another scanner...

I'd never buy the W2A if looking for a scanner. It's just a dual band
transceiver with wideband coverage. I've done a side by side comparison
between my Pro37 and AR1000 (both of which I've dumped) and my BC200XLT and
Pro2006. The Pro43 is up there with the Pro2006, in my opinion. Take the Pro43

> I'd never buy the W2A if looking for a scanner. It's just a dual band
> transceiver with wideband coverage.
Yeah... I agree. I'm very happy with my W2A as a dual band HT, and it has
served as a temporary scanner while I was between handheld scanners. I had
it with me, so I used it as a comparison. When used close to the 2 meter
and 440 ham bands, the receiver is pretty good, but the sensitivity drops
off pretty quickly.
> Take the Pro43 out of the store and use it in the real World and I think
> you'll be mighty impressed with the current state of miniaturization!
I'm already impressed with the Pro-43! I did the simple comparison and was
a little confused by the results, so I decided to ask the only person I knew
who had a Pro-43 out in the real world... You! <G>.
(Pro-43 Battery Holder)
> Yep, I agree that it would be a good idea, except that soon you'll be
> able to order an extra holder for probably around $1.50 with the notch. <g>
Oh... For some reason, I thought the battery holder was going to be delayed
for a longer time... Never Mind!
Thanx for all of your responses! I'm looking forward to receiving my very
own Pro-43 next week! Until then, I'll just have to settle for your
experiences as recounted via CIS!

Todd, it's obvious you're highly intelligent and skilled! (Yes, this is

I don't understand your question about the range of the HTX-202.
The AR1500 will be checked out by ACE Communications and they will decide
what, if anything, needs to be improved for our market.
The Pro43 is custom made for Tandy by GRE in Japan.

Larry... Jeff Goldman made Forum history earlier by being the first to own a
Pro-43, and then the first to discover which diode should be removed to
retore full 800MHz coverage (although Jeff, or none of us here on the forum,
for that matter, would ever consider listening to anything in the previously
blocked bands).

The photos on the box that the Pro43 comes in shows what was actually a
prototype, not the finished product. The photos show that the unit has plastic
buttons, fake holes on the side, and a rear battery pack! In reality, the
Pro43 has rubberized buttons, charge and power jacks on the side, and a
bottom-loading battery pack. Knobs on top of the scanner are a hair different,
too.

Jane, the answer is to go to a different RS then. Your RS should stock ALL RS
antennas. I use a little telescoping cellular antenna from CPD; that is,
Cellular Product Distributors in California. It is small, works extremely well
and costs little. But, it will break. This is my second one and they admit it
doesn't stand up well over time. A rubber duckie will last forever probably.
Whichever one you get, you'll have to get a TNC/BNC adapter from RS.
Big question now is who is going to be the one to post the "DIODE IN PRO43
FOUND!" message. <G>
Good luck with Marymac. Their price certainly is wonderful. I couldn't wait,
so...

Why did you choose the CPD telescoping cellular antenna? Does RS have one
that's comparable?
Not only does our RS not stock antennas, it also never has Police Call. I had
to wait a week for the "special order" Pro37 rubber duckie. It's ridiculous.
That's why I decided to get the Pro43 through Marymac.

Very comfortable to wear and not obvious. It has a little piece of foam

I just have to tell about my trip to RS this past friday.
I was out and happened to past a RS and on a whim decided to see if they had
or knew anything about the Pro43. The _manager_ eagerly greeted me and said
he would be just a moment (he was with someone else). He asked what he
could do and I asked to see the new Pro43 scanner. He just looked at me like
I was an idiot and said he wasn't aware of any new scanner and the new
catalog wouldn't be out for sometime. I said that I was aware some stores
in CT had already received a shipment. He then said, that other guy I was
talking to is the _DM_ and I sure he will know about. "Hey Bob, what do you
know about the new scanner?" Bob has an extremely dumb look on his face.
"I'm not aware of a new scanner!" I say, try catalog number 20-300. The
_SM_ punches in the numbers on his computer and guess what happens. It
comes up. I then start giving them the low down as to specs, etc. and they
start asking questions. The big one is HOW do I know this. Only after much
fun do I let them in on the secret.
That was so much fun I think I'll start touring Nashville and go to all the
RS stores and repeat the above. Maybe I'll even tour the state.

I am going out to Sycamore to pick up the unit as soon as I get off this
thing. Then when mine comes in from Marymac I will return it to a store where
I was treated pretty rudely yesterday (Fox Valley Mall). I bet they LOVE
taking in $350 credits from other stores!!!--Brad

The Pro43 is an almost continuous coverage receiver. It lacks FM Broadcast and
TV audio, but has everything else from 30-1000MHz. It gives you the choice of
modes (AM/FM) and is as fast as the Pro37. It continues to have the many
features of the Pro37, with the addition of allowing you to Scan or manually
step in either direction. Obviously, you still can Search in either direction.
Since the Pro43 is a triple conversion design, it is not plagued by images as
the Pro34/37 were. That means a clean 800MHz Public Service band. On my
BC200XLT (with images that go the other way) you can hear 440MHz Amateurs in
the EMS (ambulance) band. Not so with the wonderful Pro43. It has intermod and
birdies like all scanners, but GRE-produced products allow you to program the
freq 5kHz off one way or another to get away from the intermod (without
sounding off freq or having selectivity problems).
Sensitivity is now up there with the Pro2006, far better on 800MHz than the
BC200XLT and Pro37. It is on par with the hot AR1000 I sold.
I've been using alkalines for a week now and still haven't been able to kill
them. There's never been a handheld scanner this good. Nothing is perfect, but
this is a step in the right direction.

I almost bought it yesterday, but I didn't have enough "discretionary funds"

BTW, regarding your intent to return the Marymac unit to the Fox Valley

I'm going to do this by memory: 1. Remove four screws and battery pack. Slide
back off. 2. Remove 6-8 silver screws from 1st PC board. 3. Remove solder from
ground pad and center feed conductor of antenna at PC board. 4. Disconnect 2
plugs/wiring harnesses 5. Lift top board away from bottom paying careful
attention to black plug near bottom of assembly. 6. Remove 2 silver screws
from 2nd PC board 7. Carefully pull 2nd PC board away from 3rd (keypad) board
paying special attention to two white header connectors on side. this will
also contain th controls. 7.5 Remove solder from four points on the large
shield covering the microprocessor board. Remove shield. 8. Look for a row of
surface mount diodes (small, rectangular, approx 1/32" long, black with gray
markings). These will be in locations marked D1, D2, D3, D4, etc. Some
locations are blank. 9. Using a very low temp iron and smallest solder wick
available, remove solder from both sides of D4. Use hemostats to grip the
diode while desoldering. Remove diode and store in a safe place. 10. Reverse
the steps above. 11. You should now have a full coverage scanner.
Notes: Don't attempt this if you don't feel confident of your
soldering/desoldering abilities. The disassembly is no problem, but the solder
removal at the antenna, shield, and diode can be tricky.

Sorry to thwart your vengeful intents. The Fox Valley Mall store will just
charge the Sycamore store for the cost of the Pro-43. Then, the Fox Valley

If, however, you buy it from the Fox Valley Mall store and return it to the

I keep forgetting to mention an improvement in the squelch threshold of the
Pro43. With the Pro37, GRE finally tightened up the squelch so that there was
very little hysterisis (slop). Now, it's even tighter and the 800MHz threshold
is equalized with the other bands. On my Pro37, 800MHz' threshold was a hair
lower than the threshold for all other bands (opposite of AR1000). Now, it's
equal.
-Jeff
PS I talked to two different offices of Uniden in two different states
(looking for a schematic for an old scanner for a friend) and asked about an
updating to the 5 yr old BC200XLT, now that they really have tough
competition. Both ladies are unaware of an imminent new model. Maybe someday
they'll spend the money to come out with a new model. Also, I talked to Racing
Electronics the other day and asked about the comment someone here made about
the battery life situation being rectified in the latest BC200XLT's. The
techie was unaware of any factory fix; consequently, Racing is still killing
the low batt indicator and stupid 10min timer circuit to improve the battery
life by several hours.

it's 5yr old model, but I'm happy with it and its speed), and they also did
the battery mod too. Is there a better battery from the factory now, or is it
a mod in the 200xlt itself?

It's not the battery that is the problem... it's the stupid timer circuit that
turns off the scanner after 10 min when the low batt indicator comes on too
soon (battery voltage hasn't dropped low enough). Racing kills the timer and
low batt indicator. You know the scanner battery needs to be recharged either
when the scanner acts weird (clicking on and off or sounding strange) or just
dies. I haven't lost memory yet. The BC200XLT is a wonderful workhorse of a
scanner.
I bought mine last year from Grove and it's been flawless. I had a friend do
the speed, battery and 800MHz mods. I did NOT have him do the earphone volume
mod because I don't like it! I won't be using 2 headphones at once with the
scanner or an external speaker (with 450mW of audio output it doesn't need
one), but absolutely LOVE its lack of hiss when using headphones! If I
bypassed the limiting resistor to restore full audio output, I'd have LOADS of
hiss like other scanners and HT's. (I can still bypass the resistor
temporarily by shorting a wire from the earphone jack to the ant jack though.
I will not get rid of this scanner, that's for sure. It is now hooked to my RS
2m 5/8 wave mag mount antenna in the car. I leave the BC200XLT under the front
passenger seat and can easily reach to get it and safely reprogram it while
driving. I do keep an extra nicad pack in the car, along with a Pro37-type
rubber duckie so that -if I'm at a fire or whatever- I can jump out of the car
with the scanner at the ready. Paul, you should order the 1200mA Metro West
battery pack with twice the capacity of the stock one!

Jeff... I didn't realize I had replied to soooo many of your messages!
Sorry!!
I'll try to condense this to one reply...
(Pro-43 vs. Pro-37 vs. W2A)
> I'd never buy the W2A if looking for a scanner.

I gotta agree with your friend Jeff, this is a little more work than modifying
the 2006 or even the 34/37. If you don't have steady hands and a good working
knowledge of soldering and desoldering, you might be asking for trouble. I
got mine from Marymac this morning and it took about 20 minutes to do, but I
do this kind of thing every day. So far though, I love this scanner.

Now, it's
equal.

PS I talked to two different offices of Uniden in two different states

updating to the 5 yr old BC200XLT, now that they really have tough
competition.

If the guy on here named Robert is right and D2 deletes, while D3 adds, you
might as well add D3. (If it was a case of losing 30-54MHz, then it wouldn't
be worth it, obviously.)
The case is a soft, black drop-in case that is made of neoprene and vinyl. You
can listen to the scanner while it's in the case, though there are no cutouts
to program it. Think of it this way- If you had a BC200XLT you'd have a choice
of the included heavyduty case that, while you could program the scanner while
it's in the case, you'd look VERY obvious with it. Or you could buy one of
these cases that would be hardly noticeable as you wear it. I just use it to
transport the unit safely. I hate the idea of bumping into things or throwing
the scanner somewhere and having the thing get scratched. No case (like no
scanner) is perfect always, but it does what it does well... it protects the
toy and doesn't look conspicuous.

the gap between TV ch. 4 & 5. This band is primarily for "specialty"

I'm sort of surprised that this band was originally locked-out in what is

Actually, I do live right outside their doorstep! I'm about a mile away from
Marymac and have known everybody over there for many years. I stopped in on
Wednesday, as Richard had said they were having a bunch of PRO-43's shipped in
2nd day air. I walked in, pulled up a chair, and began to drum my fingers on
the counter with an "I'll wait" expression coupled with a big grin. Although
I was just kidding around, surprisingly, the UPS man pulled in about 5 minutes
later. Richard said he had ordered 60 units that were presold, but I believe
only 15 came in on that shipment. I'm sure more will follow soon.
Some thoughts on the scanner after playing with it for a few hours: A. I hate
negative tip power adapters-it's too easy to let them short out in a car, and
too many people have positive tip adapters around that "I'm sure this will
work"-.....SMOKE. Actually, this is a minor annoyance, and the PRO-43 seems to
have a protection diode for reverse polarity incidents. (Pay attention AOR!)
B. Problems with birdies generated by the electronics in my truck are much
less than with my BC200's, PRO34, PRO37, and PRO30. This will definitely be my
mobile scanner of choice. C. One of the local UHF TV stations was causing
overloading during 225-350 AM search (about every 3 MHZ). This will bear
further investigation. D. Interesting that you can control SCAN direction.
Not sure why this is here, and I can't recall any other scanners doing this.
I will definitely experiment further with the other diodes. I just returned
from vacation Tuesday and have to play catch up for the next few days. I look
forward to everyones observations about our newest toy.

I believe RS scanners have always been neg tip, so it isn't a big deal.
Yes, let me know what you learn regarding the diodes.
You are the lucky one to live so close to Marymac. Of course, I was even
luckier to have mine a week earlier. The luckiest one was Terry Kenny, though,
who stumbled into RS in LA by sheer dumb luck that day two weeks ago when the
thing came in! He beat me by a week.

Thanx, Jeff...
> Sorry, but there's no one antenna that's perfect for everything. The CDP
> ant is excellent for 800MHz and very good down to 118MHz.
For my purposes, 118MHz up to the 800MHz range is a pretty good range! I
rarely listen to anything above 900MHz (some times the 902MHz ham band), and
not too much below 144MHz (a little airband once in a while). I really
don't expect a perfect antenna when looking for that kind of range, but good
reception is fine for everyday stuff. If I get serious about a particular
band or range of freqs, I'll be more willing to use a specialized antenna!
BTW... What are your thoughts on mobile antennas? I currently have a Larson
2m/70cm antenna on the car, and it seems that this should be useable for vhf
and uhf public service band stuff, but I'm not sure of the performance at
800MHz.

That was a good point about lack of reception in that range. I read back
through Bill Cheek's Mod 17 in his first Scanner Mod Handbook and he says that
RS saves money by supplying the same CPU to all scanner worldwide, even to
scanners without the ability to receive 800MHz. The RF circuitry is tailored
for the individual model. Consequently, you may be able to receive 66-88MHz
somewhat because the scanner is peaked for reception up to 54MHz or you may
not.
I'll have to stick with my 35" Mitsubishi and 27" Sony XBR. Oh well.

No! No! No!... I can see you've not read the "Scanner Modification Handbook

this sort are...
8 pound Sledge Hammer
3 ft. Pry Bar
Construction torch
Roofing Tar (to hold it together again after you loose those teeensy screws!
Actually, at one time in my jaded past I repaired stereo equipment for a
local stereo chain. One of the manufacturers (Harmon Kardon, I think) had a
humorous list of tools in the back of their service manuals... I tincluded a

I know a few of the employees in that store since I lived there for a few

My serial is 1197. Funny how you were the first person in the country to have
the Pro43 and its number is so much higher out there. Important thing isn't
the number, of course, but the production run. You and I are from the same 4A2
run, for better or worse.
Many Pro43's on here as of today, but I feel bad for Jane who hasn't gotten
hers yet. I'll be all set on Monday when my "S" case comes from Phil
Richardson. I don't like taking it anywhere without a case, because it
certainly isn't a tank (or brick) like my BC200XLT. <g>
You know I took your advice and made sure that I have extra nicads (and an
external fast charger), but I still can't seem to kill the original alkalines
I put into the charger nearly a week and a half ago. True, I haven't had time
to play with the scanner as much as I'd like to have, but this thing is
wonderful on battery power! Thank Goodness they stuck with AA's!!
