------TS430 NOISE BLANKER MOD----------
HERE IS A MOD FOR THE KENWOOD TS-430 THAT IMPROVES THE NOISE BLANKER...
IT SHOULD (AFTER THE MOD) OPERATE MORE LIKE THE NOISE BLANKERS IN THE TS-120S
AND TS-130S SERIES.
ON THE RF UNIT X44-1510-XX CHANGE THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS:
R80 - CHANGE TO 100K 1/4 WATT RESISTOR.
R81 - CHANGE TO 56K 1/4 WATT RESISTOR.
C125 - CHANGE TO A 560 PF 25 VOLT DISC
CAPACITOR.
THAT IS IT AND ALSO NO REALIGNMENT ISREQUIRED.

HERE IS A MOD THAT SHOULD GIVE YOU TRANSMIT CAPABILITY IN OTHER SERVICE
BANDS...
ON THE RF UNIT, PLUG NO. 10, REMOVE PIN 2 AND PIN 3 BY USING A SMALL
SCREWDRIVER TO PRESS THE RELEASE TABS. THESE TABS ARE ACCESSED THROUGH THE
RECTANGULAR SLOTS IN THE PLUG BODY. THE TWO RELEASED PINS SHOULD BE IN-
SERTED IN A PIECE OF INSULATED TUBING TO PREVENT SHORTS...

----------TS430 PROCESSOR MOD----------
THE TYPE OF SPEECH PROCESSOR CIRCUIT USED IN THE TS-430 IS AN AGC (AUTOMATIC
GAIN CONTROL) DRIVEN AUDIO FREQUENCY AMPLIFIER. THE CIRCUITRY IS DIMENSIONED
SUCH THAT A FAIRLY LONG TIME CONSTANT IN THE AGC IS INVOLVED, RESULTING IN AN
AUDIO LEVELER PERFORMANCE. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THE IC USED IN THIS CIRCUIT IS
A NEC UPC1158H2, WHICH GENERALLY IS FOUND IN TAPE RECORDERS FOR AUTOMATIC
VOLUME CONTROL.
BY DECREASING THE TIME CONSTANT SUBSTAN-IALLY, THE SPEECH PROCESSING EFFECT
WILL BE IMPROVED. THE MODIFICATION IS VERY SIMPLE. REPLACE CAPACITOR C104 --
4.5 UF ON THE IF BOARD BY A SMALLER VALUE OF O.47 UF.
TO MODIFY THIS CAPACITOR:
1. REMOVE THE IF BOARD AS INDICATED FOR CW FILTER INSTALLATION.
2. REMOVE C104 FROM THE BOARD.
3. MOUNT A 0.47 UF CAPACITOR ON THE BOARD
4. MOUNT THE IF BOARD AS INDICATED BY CW FILTER INSTALLATION.
5. MAKE THE TRANSCEIVER FULLY OPERATIONAL AGAIN.
6. ADJUST THE MIC GAIN WITHOUT THE PROCESSOR UNTIL NORMAL ALC DEVIATION
7. SWITCH THE PROCESSOR ON AND ADJUST VR7 NEAR TO C104 ON THE IF BOARD
UNTIL NORMAL ALC DEVIATION. (DO NOT ALTER THE MIC GAIN AT THIS TIME)
8. ENJOY THE SPEECH PROCESSOR IMPROVEMENT.

IF YOU ARE RUNNING THE KENWOOD TS-430S AND HAVE A LACK OF CRISPNESS IN TRANS-
MIT AUDIO, THEN TRY THIS...
IST THE CAUSE IS BY MISALIGNMENT OF THE CARRIER OSCILLATORS AND BY C96 ON THE
IF UNIT. C96 SHOULD BE CHANGED FROM A .015 MICROFARAD TO A .001= MICROFARAD
50 VOLT DISC CERAMIC. THE CARRIER OSCILLATORS SHOULD BE ADJUSTED FOR A 6
DB ROLLOFF AT 2800 HZ TRANSMIT AUDIO FREQUENCY - FED INTO THE MICROPHONE
JACK. THE ZERO DB REFERENCE POINT IS 1000 HZ. THIS CAN BE DONE .BY EAR.
WITH GOOD RESULTS ON RECEIVE AUDIO SOUND..

THERE IS A SIMPLE MODIFICATION WHICH CAN BE DONE TO SPEED UP THE DECAY
OF THE TS430 AGC. AS YOU KNOW, THE TS430 AGC IS NOT SWITCHABLE--EXCEPT
BY GOING FROM SSB TO CW. THIS WILL CHANGE A VERY SWOW DECAY ON SSB TO
A MUCH FASTER DECAY ON CW. SINCE LSB IS USED FOR RTTY, YOU ARE
STUCK WITH THE VERY SLOW AGC DECAY. THE FOLLOWING MODIFICATION WILL
ALLOW YOU TO EITHER PERMANANTLY SPEED UP THE AGC OR TO BE ABLE TO
SWITCH BETWEEEN FAST OR SLOW DECAY ON SSB.. ALL IT REQUIRES IS
THAT YOU REMOVE THE TOP COVER AND LOCATE R111 AT THE REAR CENTER OF
THE I.F. BOARD. BY CLIPPING THE LEAD, THE RIG WILL BE USING THE SAME
AGC DECAY ON SSB THAT IT USES ON CW. BY INSTALLING A SWITCH OR BY USING
THE EXTRA SET OF CONTACTS ON THE IC/ALC METER SWITCH, YOU CAN SWITCH
BETWEEN FAST AND SLOW AGC IN THE SSB MODE(THE CW AGC IS UNAFFECTED-WHICH
STAYS AT FAST DECAY). I FIND THAT I USE THIS FAST DECAY 99 PERCENT OF THE
TIME, SO SOME PEOPLE MAY JUST WANT TO CLIP THE RESISTOR AND RUN THE
FAST DECAY ALL THE TIME. I FOUND THIS TO BE A VERY USEFUL MOD SINCE
THE TS430 AGC IS NORMALLY VERY S-L-O-W IN THE SSB MODE.

THE AGC MOD FOR THS KENWOOD TS-430 DOES INDEED SPEED UP THE AGC, BUT
ONLY FOR CONTINUOUS RECEIVING. IN AMTOR, THE RECEIVER NEVER RECOVERS IN
BETWEEN THE TRANSMITTED BURSTS. IT'S LIKE HAVING THE SQUELCH ON FULL.

THE AGC MOD ON THE TS430 KENWOOD TO RUN AMTOR REQUIRES THREE COMPONENT
CHANGES. ON THE IF BOARD -- FIND AND REPLACE CAPACITOR C-60, A 10 MFD,
WITH A 4.7 MFD. CLIP ONE OF THE CONNECTIONS ON DIODE D-50. REPLACE
CAPACITOR C-164, A 0.22 MFD, WITH A 0.1 MFD CERAMIC. BOTH D-50 AND
C-60 ARE ON THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE IF BOARD AND ARE ALSO MARKED
ON THE PC BOARD. HOWEVER...C-164 IS NOT MARKED CLEARLY. IT IS A 0.22
MFD CAN ELECTROYLTIC NEAR THE CENTER OF THEIF BOARD. IT IS JUST BELOW
AND TO THE RIGHT OF C-149 AND IS DIRECTLY RIGHT OF IC-5. LOOKING AT THE
BACK OF THE BOARD, ONE LEAD OF C-164 IS CONNECTED TO THE JUNCTION OF A
47K OHM RESISTOR (R-129) AND A GLASS DIODE (D-77). THESE TWO COMPONENTS
ARE ALSO NOT MARKED ON THE PC, BUT ARE SOLDERED TO THE BACK OF THE BOARD.
ONE OTHER NICE TOUCH WAS TO PUT IN-LINE WITH DIODE D-50, A SHORT PIECE
OF COAX TO A MINIATURE TOGGLE SWITCH. THIS DISABLES THE MOD, SO THAT THE
SMOOTH CHANGE OVER FROM TRANSMIT TO RECEIVE THAT THE 430 NORMALLY HAS, CAN BE
RESTORED WHEN ULTRAFAST RECOVERY IS NOT SO IMPORTANT. IN CW, WITH D-50
CLIPPED,THE RECEIVER KICKS BACK TO LIFE WITH A SHARP CRACK AND GETS ANNOYING
WHEN THE GAIN IS REALLY HIGH, CHASING AFTER A WEAK DX STATION --FOR INSTANCE.
SO THE SWITCH REMOVES DIODE D-50 FOR AMTOR AND RETURNS IT TO THE CIRCUIT FOR
ANYTHING ELSE. BUT BEWARE! EVERYTHING IS VERY TINY, VERY CROWDED, AND VERY
EXPENSIVE.
