  17. SUBJECT: SPEECH PROCESSOR NOISE
  18.  
  19. When the Processor-In control is set to some level below 10dB of 
  20. compression, a crackling noise can be induced on the transmit signal. 
  21. The following modification will reduce the noise. After the modification 
  22. has been performed, the noise can only be heard when the Processor-In 
  23. control is set too low to be functional.
  24.  
  25. NOTE: This modification has already been performed on models starting 
  26.       with serial number 0120441.
  27.  
  28. REQUIRED PARTS:
  29.  
  30. TRANSISTOR (PNP)        PART # 2SC2458Y
  31. 4.7 OHM, 1/4W RESISTOR        PART # RD14CB2E4R7J
  32. 10 OHM CHIP RESISTOR        PART # RK73FB2A100J
  33. 39 OHM CHIP RESISTOR        PART # RK73FB2A390J
  34. 10K OHM CHIP RESISTOR        PART # RK73FB2A103J
  35.  
  36. 1. Disconnect the power cord and antenna.
  37.  
  38. 2. Remove the top and bottom covers (18 screws).
  39.  
  40. 3. Locate the Signal board on the bottom of the transceiver. This is the 
  41.    front right board of the 4 boards on the bottom of the transceiver.
  42.  
  43. 4. Disconnect the 3 flex cables and remove the 6 mounting screws from 
  44.    the Signal board.
  45.  
  46. 5. Carefully lift the board and rotate it towards the AF unit (front 
  47.    left board) to expose the foil side of the Signal board. Loosen the 
  48.    wire harness as necessary to rotate the board.
  49.  
  50. THE FOLLOWING WILL BE PERFORMED ON THE FOIL SIDE OF THE SIGNAL BOARD.
  51.  
  52. 1. Cut the foil between pin 3 of CN18 and chip resistor R229.
  53.  
  54. 2. Desolder and remove R229.
  55.  
  56. 3. Solder a 10 ohm chip resistor across the cut foil.
  57.  
  58. 4. Solder a 39 ohm chip resistor in place of R229 (it will be slightly 
  59.    offset due to the installation of the 10 ohm resistor).
  60.  
  61. 5. Solder a 4.7 ohm resistor to the collector of a 2SC2458(Y) transistor. 
  62.    Shorten the lead length to accommodate the following installation and 
  63.    insulate the leads with shrink tubing.
  64.  
  65. 6. Solder the exposed end of the 4.7 ohm resistor to chip capacitor C167.
  66.  
  67. 7. Solder the base and emitter leads as shown in the accompanying diagram.
  68.  
  69. 8. Solder a 10K ohm resistor to the circuit as shown.
  70.  
  71. This modification is covered under the 1 year warranty.
  72. Time required to perform the modification is 1 hr or less. 
  73.
