  17. SUBJECT: REPAIR OF UNIT

  20. 1. Symptoms:  Two dots on LED display
  21.    Check:  Het input and VFO input connections (Dirty, intermittent, 
  22.    missing.)
  23.  
  24. 2. Display reading wrong frequency
  25.    Check:  If display frequency is reading off by 2 MHz and last 
  26.    four digits on display reading (894.9) check carrier input wire 
  27.    (Dirty, missing, intermittent.)
  28.  
  29. 3. No display or dim display
  30.    Check:  5v reg (IC power) not working or plated thru holes not 
  31.    plated thru.

  33.  Above are common mechanical failures that occur with DG-5.  We suggest 
  34.  the following troubleshooting procedure:
  35.  
  36.  Check:    
  37.  
  38.   A. Power all power supply levels.
  39.   B. Reference oscillator Q21 and divider chain IC5-11 (RF, waveforms, DC.)
  40.   C. Carrier, VFO and HET, also counter (When applicable) for RF, Waveforms 
  41.      and DC levels; see service manual for proper levels.

  43. Note: Operation of the circuits are essential before proceeding.
  44.  
  45. It's been Kenwoods experience that when problems do occur with the DG-5 
  46. that approximately 90% of the problems will be caused by insufficient 
  47. solder connections and not the actual components themselves.
  48.  
  49. Note: We suggest the following procedure if buffers, mixers and oscillators 
  50.       are working properly:  See service manual for proper levels.
  51.  
  52.  Check:    
  53.  
  54.    A. All sloder connections (loose or cold.)
  55.    B. Solder all plated thru holes:  32 guage wire inserted in plated 
  56.       thru holes takes approximately 30 minutes to do and is very, 
  57.       very, effective.

  59. Service Suggestion:
  60.  
  61.  A heat gun and freeze spray often are very effective in locating cold 
  62.  or not-plated thru holes.
  63.  
  64.      A. Heat board with heat gun (expands board).
  65.         This often caused dormant or loose connection to appear.
