  8.                Welcome to QuickMorse! QuickMorse is a quite extensive morse
  9.           code tutoring program. Learning morse code  and becoming familiar
  10.           with the morse code characters is best accomplished by repeatedly
  11.           listening to and taking  down morse  code. There  are audio tapes
  12.           available  which  contain  morse  code  for  listening  practice,
  13.           however the student usually becomes accustomed to the contents of
  14.           the tapes  and after continued use begins to recall the text from
  15.           memory rather than truly  read it.  This program,  in contrast to
  16.           tapes, can  among other  things send completely random code using
  17.           its entire character set or a set of  characters selected  by the
  18.           user,  so  that  there  will  be  no  repeating pattern which the
  19.           student could get used to.
  20.                If you are planning to obtain an FCC  license or  just learn
  21.           morse code  for the fun of it, I'm sure that this program will be
  22.           of value to you.

  79.           System Requirements:
  80.  
  81.                The following computer hardware  should be  present in order
  82.           to be able to run QuickMorse:
  83.  
  84.                1.   IBM PC/XT/AT  or compatible  running under PC or MS-DOS
  85.                     2.x or 3.x with a minimum of 128 KBytes of memory.
  86.                2.   One floppy disk drive
  87.                3.   One monochrome monitor or 80 column  color monitor with
  88.                     appropriate adapter
  89.                4.   A working speaker in your PC
  90.

  92.           QuickMorse Installation:
  93.  
  94.                This installation  program is provided in case QuickMorse is
  95.           to be used on a terminal that is  not completely  IBM compatible.
  96.           To run  the installation  program, make  sure that QMORSE.COM and
  97.           the three QM-INST files are  present  in  the  current directory,
  98.           type  QM-INST  at  the  DOS  prompt  and press the ENTER key. The
  99.           program will  then take  you through  the installation procedure.
  100.           Once QuickMorse is installed, the QM-INST files must no longer be
  101.           kept together with the QuickMorse program files.

  103.           Starting QuickMorse:
  104.  
  105.                Two files have to be present in order  for QuickMorse  to be
  106.           able to  run. The  files that  are needed  are QMORSE.COM and QM-
  107.           CODE.DAT. To start QuickMorse set the drive and  the directory in
  108.           which  the  previously  listed  files  are  residing  to  be  the
  109.           defaults. Typing QMORSE at the DOS prompt and  pressing the ENTER
  110.           key which will cause QuickMorse to be loaded and start executing.
  111.           It will take a second for the program to initialize itself and to
  112.           read and  load the  data file  QM-CODE.DAT. After  that period of
  113.           time, you will be presented with QuickMorse's main menu.

  116.           QuickMorse Main Menu Options:
  117.  
  118.           Option 1: Generate groups of five using entire character set.
  119.  
  120.                With this option your  computer  will  send  groups  of five
  121.           characters,  randomly   choosing  characters   from  all  of  the
  122.           available characters.
  123.  
  124.           Option 2: Generate groups of five using selected character set.
  125.  
  126.                Like in option 1,  groups of  five characters  will be send.
  127.           However,  the  characters  will  be chosen from the user selected
  128.           character set. (see 'Defining the User Selected Character Set')
  129.  
  130.           Option 3: Generate random code using entire character set.
  131.  
  132.                If  option  3  is  selected,  your  computer  will   send  a
  133.           continuous  stream  of  characters  which will be chosen randomly
  134.           from the entire character set.
  135.  
  136.           Option 4: Generate random code using selected characters.
  137.  
  138.                Similar to  option 3,  characters will  be send continuously
  139.           using, however,  only those  characters that are part of the user
  140.           selected set. (see 'Defining the User Selected Character Set')
  141.  
  142.           Option 5: Give previously recorded text.
  143.  
  144.                This  option  allows  you  to  have  the  computer  send the
  145.           contents of  a previously created DOS text file. These text files
  146.           can be created, for example, with DOS's EDLIN line editor or with
  147.           WordStar using  the non-document  mode. The file must have a name
  148.           with an extension of TXT. After you tell  QuickMorse the  name of
  149.           the file  it should  send, it will check if a compiled version of
  150.           the file, a file with the  same  name  but  an  extension  of QMC
  151.           instead  of  TXT,  exists.  If  the QuickMorse code (QMC) file is
  152.           present, the file can be  send  immediately.  If  not, QuickMorse
  153.           will ask  whether or  not you  wish to  compile the text file and
  154.           create a corresponding QMC file.

  156.           Option 6: Give manually entered text.
  157.  
  158.                With this option text can be entered at the keyboard and the
  159.           computer will  encode and  send it immediately. QuickMorse allows
  160.           for a type ahead of 800 characters or about 10 lines of  text. If
  161.           a character that cannot be encoded is entered, the keystroke will
  162.           be echoed as an asterisk (*).

  164.           Option 7: Display and encode entire character set.
  165.  
  166.                To display the entire  character set  and to  hear what each
  167.           character sounds like, select this option.
  168.  
  169.           Option 8: Print the entire character set with codes.
  170.  
  171.                This option will produce a hard copy of the entire character
  172.           set. QuickMorse assumes that  your  printer  is  attached  to the
  173.           first parallel  port, LPT1.  Depending on  what type of a printer
  174.           you are using, it  may  not  be  possible  to  print  the foreign
  175.           letters that are part of the character set.

  177.           Option 9: Change morse tone frequency of XXX Hz.
  178.  
  179.                Each time  the program is started, the morse tone will be of
  180.           a frequency of 800 Hz. If a different frequency is desired, it is
  181.           possible to change it using this option.

  183.           Option 0: End QuickMorse.
  184.  
  185.                Selection option 0 will end QuickMorse and return you to the
  186.           operating system.

  189.           Specifying the Code Speed:
  190.  
  191.                For options 1 through 7, you will be asked at what speed the
  192.           morse code should be send. Immediately after program start-up the
  193.           default is  40  characters  per  minute  and  this  speed  may be
  194.           selected by  simply pressing  return at the prompt. If you change
  195.           the code speed, the new value you select will become  the default
  196.           from thereon.

  199.           Specifying the Echo Device:
  200.  
  201.                For options  1 through 6, QuickMorse will also inquire as to
  202.           where and how it should echo  the characters  while sending them.
  203.           It is possible to have no echo at all or to echo to the screen or
  204.           to the  printer  (LPT1).  Either  the  actual  characters  or the
  205.           characters' morse code representations may be echoed.

  207.           Defining the User Selected Character Set:
  208.  
  209.                When option  2 or  option 4  is selected you will be given a
  210.           report of the current status of the user  selected character set,
  211.           and you  will have an opportunity to change it. The user selected
  212.           character set  may  be  chosen  to  contain  all  of  the english
  213.           letters,  digits,  special  symbols  or  foreign  letters  or any
  214.           combination of the above. It also possible to  manually enter the
  215.           characters that  are to be a part of it. However, once characters
  216.           have been entered into the set  manually, further  characters may
  217.           only be added through repeated use of this option.

  220.           About Learning Morse Code

  222.                This manual is designed to give information about the use of
  223.           the program and is not a  morse code  tutorial in  itself. If you
  224.           don't  already  have  one,  you should consider purchasing a book
  225.           that discusses the proper ways of  sending and  taking down morse
  226.           code and that gives some sort of an outline for a lesson plan.
