"WHEN I FEEL SICK I SWITCH ON MY 8-BIT!"
(c) by MC Laser / tSCc
!! ATARI XL/XE AND INTERNET !!
by Dely / Atari Area
English translation by Grey / Mystic Bytes
----------------------------------------------------- --- --- --- -- --- - ----
Would you like to surf the net using your 8-bit Atari? What would you say about
IRCing for example? There are many people who think that Atari XL/XE is too
small or simply too poor to connect to the internet. Well, in fact it won't be
the typical use of internet - we will use 8-bit Atari as a Linux <link=g37.scr>terminal</l>.
Anyway that's worth a mention!
What we'll need:
- Atari XL/XE (of course), additional memory would be nice. Generally 128Kb is
enough because the communication software doesn't use more. Attention: You
need an original Atari - an emulator is useless (it simply won't run :))
- PC connected to the internet (modem or stable connect)
- Sio2PC cable to connect Atari with PC
- APE '98 proggy for PC which is needed for this cable
- ICE-T proggy for Atari (it's bundled together with APE)
- Shell account accessible through Telnet
- Ultra-basic acquaintance of Linux
Ok, let's start! I will explain everything "step by step":
Install APE '98. It's a SHAREWARE product for which we should pay the author.
If we are too poor and we don't have the cash - don't panic, it works even
without registration (however you have to wait a bit longer after running this
proggy).
Set your own configuration in APE. In the 1st drive (in APE not in Atari) put
image disk with ICE-T proggy. Of course you can copy ICE-T under DOS to the
5.25 disk but in that case we will load ICE-T from our favourite floppy-drive
for Atari.
Connect to the internet using PC. Boot your Atari and wait a while till the
ICE-T will be loaded. After this you should see a white screen with unfolded
menu on the top. You can spend some time with ICE-T configuration, however we
don't have time for that - we want to surf the net! :)
Choose the "Terminal" option from the menu on the top and press RETURN. Proxy
sign> should be displayed: we are now on the INTERNET!!! Now we can write the
address of our shell account e.g. open myprovider.pl and press RETURN. And now
after typing Login and Password, we can control our account using 8-bit Atari!
What you can do now? Well, it depends on you. If you want IRC then write:
BitchX nick warszawa.irc.pl, if you want to see www-sites write:
lynx http://www.nice.page.pl/
Why do we need PC for all this time? Maybe because not too many people have a
modem for their "small" Ataris? :) But even if you have a modem the maximum
speed you can obtain is 1200 bps. So transfer Atari <-> could be something
about 0.1 KB/s :) Besides I am not use if ICE-T can handle the PPP connection
through TCP-IP protocol (I rather doubt in it).
Ok.. but is there any sense to connect Atari to the internet if we still have
to use PC as well? I think there is some reasons: When my woman uses ICQ on PC
and I am not able to surf using PC then I switch on my 8-bit...
This manner has been tested by myself on the following configuration:
Atari 130XE with 320 KB of RAM, Qmeg OS (I have to switch it off because ICE-T
doesn't see non-existing cartridges) and PC PII 333Mhz 128 MR RAM.
Write to me if you have any problems connecting: dely@atari-area.net
And don't forget to tell me your configuration.
