  4. Thank you for purchasing Take A Break! Crosswords.  The
  5. following contains some configuration that may prove useful
  6. if you plan to use the sounds & music or have a 286 computer.
  7.  
  8.      ** ** ** NOTES FOR 286 USERS ** ** **
  9.  
  10. If you have a 286 computer with only 2 megabytes of RAM, a
  11. Sound Card, and a S-VGA monitor running in 256 color mode,
  12. you are likely to get an out-of-memory error ("Exec Format
  13. Error"), when trying to load Crosswords.  You can fix this
  14. problem by disabling the sound drivers (located in the 
  15. "Drivers" section of the Control Panel); or by changing your
  16. display to 16 color by selecting "VGA" from the "Windows
  17. Setup" section located in the "Main" folder (NOTE: Your 
  18. computer will run much faster in 16 color mode).

  23. Music & Sound effects are only available when running
  24. Windows 3.1 or higher, or when using Windows 3.0 with
  25. Multimedia extensions.

  29. CUSTOMIZING WINDOWS TO PERFORM BETTER WHEN USING SOUND CARDS
  30. After you have set up your system to accommodate music &
  31. sound effects (as outlined in your Windows manual), you may
  32. wish to tailor your system to perform better.  The following
  33. paragraphs explain how to get the best quality music on the
  34. two most popular sound cards (if you don't have one of these
  35. two cards, the music will still play fine, it just won't
  36. take advantage of specialized features indigenous to those
  37. cards):

  41. USING AN ADLIB COMPATIBLE SOUND CARD
  42. (Adlib, Sound Blaster, Thunder Board, etc.)
  43. In order to select the Enhanced Adlib Music, select "Adlib
  44. General" option from the MIDI Mapper located in the "Control
  45. Panel" section of the "Main" file folder.  Please note this
  46. is different from the "Adlib" setting and gives
  47. substantially better results.  NOTE:  Most software supports
  48. this option, and you shouldn't have to switch it back.

  52. USING A ROLAND MT-32 OR LAPC-1 SOUND CARD (OR COMPATIBLE)
  53. Because Windows does not fully support all the extra
  54. features and sounds of the Roland cards in the default
  55. Windows settings, we have included two different versions of
  56. music for Roland users.  The first one (which is default on
  57. Crosswords), will play fine in conjunction with the default
  58. Windows setting.  However, if you want to hear the Enhanced
  59. Roland Music you must reconfigure Windows as outlined below.

  63. CONFIGURING THE MIDI MAPPER FOR ENHANCED ROLAND MUSIC
  64. The following represents the steps needed to configure
  65. Windows to play Enhanced Roland Music.  Please be aware that
  66. this is an advanced option and should only be attempted by
  67. those that are comfortable with Windows configuration.
  68. Additionally, please note that when using other software not
  69. supporting this feature, you must select the "LAPC-1" or
  70. "MT-32" option from the MIDI Mapper for the other music to
  71. play correctly (you won't, however, have to reconfigure the
  72. Enhanced Roland, you will only have to re-select it from the
  73. MIDI Mapper).

  75.      IMPORTANT: Never play Roland Enhanced Music without
  76. first configuring the MIDI Mapper accordingly.

  78. 1) Enter the MIDI Mapper from the Program Manager (located
  79. in the "Control Panel" section of the "Main" file folder.

  81. 2) Select "New" and type in the name "Enhanced Roland" (you
  82. can ignore the description), and click on "OK".

  84. 3) The "MIDI Setup" screen will be shown, and you must then
  85. reassign the destination channels (Dest Chan) as follows:

  97.      IMPORTANT!  Do not configure any other channels!

  100. 4) Then you must configure the "Port Name" to "Roland MPU-
  101. 401" (by selecting the pull-down menu by clicking on the
  102. down-arrow button located on the right side of the active
  103. "Port Name"). The source channels that must be configured
  104. are:

  117.      IMPORTANT!  Do not configure any other channels!

  119. 5)  Then click on "OK" indicating you are finished with the
  120. setup.  Click again on "OK" when Windows asks if you want to
  121. save the new setup.

  123. 6)  Click on "Close" to exit from the MIDI Mapper (don't
  124. double-click on the upper left-hand close icon, as it won't
  125. save your configuration).

  127. 7)  Enter Take A Break Crosswords and select "Roland
  128. Enhanced Music" from the "Sound" pull-down menu, and enjoy!
