  42. INTRODUCTION:
  43.  
  44. Maze Master is a classic maze solving game, with a computer twist.  The
  45. computer can solve the tough mazes, too!  You are the mouse, peeking 
  46. over the maze to study it, getting down on all four legs to run through 
  47. it some, then peeking again!
  48.   
  49. Start with the easy mazes, then move all the way to the very tough 
  50. Monster mazes!  Then raise the walls so you can't peek!
  51.  
  52. You get points for solving the maze, and bonus points if you solve it 
  53. quickly. Score enough and you can make the list of the top 5 all-time 
  54. players!
  55.  
  56. Traveling and not near your computer?  Print out a book of mazes to 
  57. entertain the kids (and yourself)!
  58.  
  59. BONUS FOR REGISTERED USERS:  There are great SOUND EFFECTS for 
  60. registered users running Windows 3.1, sent to you upon registration.

  62. This program is SHAREWARE, and is not FREE!  It is a copyrighted 
  63. program.  After a couple of weeks of usage, you are obliged to register 
  64. the program or remove it from your computer(s).  You are encouraged to 
  65. pass it along to a friend, but you must include this file and the 
  66. registration form as well.  Registration entitles you to certain support
  67. and update privaleges detailed in the Help for the program.  So PLEASE
  68. register the program so I can continue to develop others!

  86. INSTALLATION:
  87.  
  88. Put the files in your favorite Windows games directory.  
  89. Follow your Windows instructions for creating an icon for the 
  90. WinMaze.exe in a program group of your choice.
  91.  
  92. OPTIONAL:  Move the BWCC.dll file to your Windows\System directory.
  93. If one is already there, keep the newest one!  The included copy of 
  94. BWCC.dll supports both Windows 3.0 and 3.1.

  98. UN-INSTALLATION:
  99.  
  100. While I hope it will never happen, I do believe you should be able to
  101. un-install a program.  Maze Master does not modify Config.Sys, 
  102. AutoExec.Bat, Win.Ini, nor System.Ini.  It does not create a new 
  103. Program Group for itself.
  104.  
  105. Besides the files listed above, it will create a private Ini file, 
  106. WinMaze.Ini, in the \Windows directory.
  107.  
  108. To un-install, simply erase this file and any files named WinMaze.*
  109. on your disk.  I suggest keeping the latest copy of BWCC.dll, but 
  110. you could delete it and later download it from CompuServe's BCPPWIN 
  111. forum if you needed it.

  115. QUICK START (if you are impatient like me):
  116.  
  117. In Maze Master, you are the mouse!  You must trace your way from through
  118. the maze, starting at the left and leaving the maze on the right.
  119.  
  120. The mouse shape helps you.  Normally, the mouse is standing to scan the 
  121. maze.  But when you press the left mouse button, your mouse gets down 
  122. on all fours at the beginning of the maze.
  123.  
  124. You can rest at any time by releasing the mouse button.  Your mouse 
  125. peeks up to study the maze.  Pressing down on the left mouse button again 
  126. moves you back to all fours at the point you left off.
  127.  
  128. The amount of the maze you can see varies with the size of the walls 
  129. of the maze.  With low walls, you can see the whole maze before you 
  130. start (but the walls are still too high to climb).  With high walls, 
  131. you can only see the walls in front, to the sides, and in back of you.  
  132. If you declare yourself a blind mouse, you can only feel the walls 
  133. around you.  And if you dare, make the walls glass!  With glass walls, 
  134. you can't see them, only bump your nose into them!
  135.  
  136. If you get frustrated, let the computer solve the maze by selecting 
  137. the Solve option under the Maze menu.

  141. SYSTEMS SUPPORTED
  142.  
  143. Maze Master has been tested under Windows 3.0 and Windows 3.1 with DOS 
  144. 4.0 and 5.0.  It has run on PS/2 Microchannel machine, Dell ISA 
  145. machine, and Zeos notebook.  It has run on LCD VGA display systems, 
  146. color VGA display systems, SVGA display systems at up to 1024x768x256, 
  147. and 8514 256-color display systems.

  149. Maze Master requires a 286 or higher processor.  A Windows supported 
  150. sound board is required for the enhanced sound effects available to 
  151. registered users.

  158. CHANGE HISTORY
  159.  
  160. V1.01 - Several new functions and minor updates (but lots of them):
  161.  
  162.   1.  I am now a member of the Association of Shareware Professionals,
  163.       an industry group which focuses on making shareware a viable 
  164.       alternative source of quality, cost effective software.  As a 
  165.       registered user of an ASP members products, you have additional
  166.       rights and guarantees!  The appropriate ASP logos and warranty
  167.       information has been added throughout the program.

  169.   2.  Sound effects have been added.  For Windows 3.0 users, its just
  170.       speaker beeps.  But for Windows 3.1 users who can play .WAV 
  171.       files, Maze Master uses both the default system events for its
  172.       dialog boxes, AND special extended sound effects using .WAV files
  173.       sent to registered users (over 500 KB of sounds)!
  174.  
  175.   3.  Many message dialogs now have the corresponding sound effect (for
  176.       Windows 3.1 users) or a simple beep (for Windows 3.0 users).
  177.  
  178.   4.  Fewer "nag" screens, both at start-up and completion.  After 50
  179.       uses of the program, they occur at both start-up and completion
  180.       as in the prior version.  The nag screens remind you how many 
  181.       times you have played an unregistered copy.
  182.  
  183.   5.  Better printing!  A batch printing option has been added which
  184.       you can use to print yourself a book of mazes for those long
  185.       trips.  Also, a print abort dialog is presented so you can
  186.       change your mind.
  187.  
  188.   6.  If you choose to print a maze, the maze number is included at the
  189.       bottom.  This allows you to go back to Maze Master and have the
  190.       computer solve it in the future.
  191.  
  192.   7.  Two new buttons have been added to make it easy to jump to the 
  193.       next larger or smaller maze size.  These serve as alternatives
  194.       to pulling down a menu.
  195.  
  196.   8.  All walls are shown upon solving a maze, even if some were hidden 
  197.       during solving.  You get a chance to really see how tricky it was! 
  198.  
  199.   9.  Bonus scoring has been simplified!  The bonus is not reduced to 
  200.       the base score, which it was before.  To compensate, the initial
  201.       bonus has been cut in half, but it runs out more slowly now as
  202.       well.
  203.  
  204.  10.  In the prior version, the bonus started decreasing as soon as the 
  205.       maze was drawn.  Now, if the walls are not visable, the bonus 
  206.       doesn't begin to decrease until the mouse starts through the maze.
  207.       So, you get to take a deep breath before starting!
  208.  
  209.  11.  The minimum size window is fixed:  It will accommodate all the
  210.       buttons in the display area AND an "expert" size maze.
  211.  
  212.  12.  If the screen is too small to draw the maze (either because the
  213.       maze requested is too large, or the user has resized the window),
  214.       Maze Master will issue a warning and draw the largest standard
  215.       maze which does fit.
  216.  
  217.  13.  New buttons have been added to the Best Scores dialog to allow
  218.       easy scrolling to the Best Scores of other maze sizes.
  219.  
  220.  14.  The option of having the score display above the maze has been 
  221.       eliminated.  I never really liked it, and the addition of the
  222.       new buttons made it impractical in its prior form.
  223.  
  224.  15.  The most recent Borland BWCC.DLL (Version 1.02) for the great 
  225.       buttons is included.  This BWCC.DLL supports both Windows 3.0 
  226.       and 3.1, and is smaller than the prior version!
  227.  
  228.  16.  The Help file has been compressed to be about 20% smaller using 
  229.       the Windows 3.1 Help Compiler.  It is still viewable on Windows
  230.       3.0.

  232.  17.  A registration CREDIT has been added if you do not wish a diskette
  233.       of the latest version.  The latest version will be available from
  234.       most ASP-approved Shareware Vendors in a timely fashion for you to
  235.       order or download at your leisure.

  237.  18.  The registration fee for non-US/non-Canadian users has been increased
  238.       to $20 (US) to cover overseas postage and handling.

  244. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
  245.  
  246. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  247. before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  248. using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  249. differ on details -- some request registration while others
  250. require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  251. registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  252. using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  254. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  255. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  256. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  257. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  258. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  259. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  260. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  261. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  262. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  263. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  264. Shareware.

  266. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  267. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  268. whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  269. fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  270. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  271. has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  272. product, you don't pay for it.

  278. Users of Maze Master must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  279. "Maze Master is supplied as is.  The Flatirons Group disclaims all
  280. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  281. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
  282. The Flatirons Group assumes no liability for damages, direct or conse-
  283. quential, which may result from the use of Maze Master."

  285. Maze Master is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  286. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  287. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  288. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  289. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  290. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  291. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  292. useful and find that you are using Maze Master and continue to use
  293. Maze Master after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
  294. istration payment of $15 ($20 for foreign users) to The Flatirons 
  295. Group.  The registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  296. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  297. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  298. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  299. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  300. being used at one location while it's being used at another.
  301. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  302. same time.

  304. Commercial users of Maze Master must register and pay for their
  305. copies of Maze Master within 30 days of first use or their license
  306. is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
  307. tacting The Flatirons Group.

  309. Anyone distributing Maze Master for any kind of remuneration must
  310. first contact The Flatirons Group at the address below for authorization.
  311. This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  312. recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  313. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  314. Maze Master immediately.  (However The Flatirons Group must still 
  315. be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the 
  316. latest version of Maze Master.)

  318. You are encouraged to pass a copy of Maze Master along to your
  319. friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  320. copy if they find that they can use it.  All registered users
  321. will receive a copy of the latest version of the Maze Master
  322. and support for a year.
